My father has lived in Seoul for over twenty years, but when he drinks, he still talks about his childhood on a farm, when he would cook feed for the cows. Along with those memories, he has held on to his dialect as well.
When we went on family trips during my childhood, my father, who was driving, would set off without even a map. If we ran into a dead end, we would simply turn back, and sometimes he would take out a camping pot and a portable gas stove, park the car anywhere, and cook ramen. I admired that sense of freedom in him.
But at some point, that sense of freedom began to stand in contrast to his present life, and at times, it can sound like a kind of lament. Even so, my father never lets go of his childhood.
That is why my father is such a special person to me. As I am now, I still admire that purity in him.
