cutwarmthā:
Admittedly, the series of rambling that follows Ruiās announcement about his cat is kind of nice. It feels considerably less like the awkward and uncomfortable situation that it soĀ clearly is; almost like theyāre friends already. He listens intently, giving a nod here and there when he thinks itās appropriate, and ā
ā oh, heās gotten nervous again, hasnāt he?
āAh.ā
āYouāre fine, you know. I donāt mind if you talk a lot.ā Rui does better that way, but he doesnāt really want to lay himself bare that much ā or at all, really. Hanako talks a lot, too. Rui isnāt very good with words, so he has no problems with having to listen. He runs through everything Aichi just said in his head again, trying to make a point to reply to what he can, no matter how awful Rui himself might be with words.
āYou can spoil Himari. I donāt mind. Sheāll get clingy, too, but I figure I may as well let her live her happiest life. She likes salmon, if you ever want to give her a treat. Iādā¦ā Aichiās staring at the ground; Rui doesnāt do anything to impose himself very much. If anything, he just takes a step backwards. It seems like Aichi might get a little less jumpy if Rui keeps some more space between themā¦?
āIād like to see them. Even if theyāre cards. I donāt care about that, either. If you like cards, I think thatās interesting. I like ā going for walks. Thatās boring, isnāt it? So we can be even, now, in sharing something embarrassing about ourselves.ā
He lets himself take a seat on the sofa, giving Aichi a glance before distracting himself by looking around the cabin. Himariās probably napping, he thinks; it might be a smart idea to call for her to diffuse whatever situation is happening, but he doesnāt want to wake her up.Ā āI wouldnāt have offered if I didnāt have the time for it. You arenāt imposing ā I told you myself. I can show you around sometime. That isnāt youĀ imposing, itās me. So itās alright.ā
A little stiffly, Rui pats the spot on the sofa beside him.
ā⦠do you have the cards with you? Iād be interested in seeing them.ā
Rui is nice.
Aichi ends up thinking that before he even notices. he canāt really bring himself to answer anything, not yet, but itās nice toā¦be listened to, he guesses.
it feels a little less alone, like this, talking about cats and going on walks and - (human things. normal things. Rui is a good person.) - nice things, so Aichi nods.
āyouāre a nice person,ā Aichi ends up echoing, before just nodding and sitting down next to Rui, rustling through his pockets. āI mean, um, thanks. Iād like that. to go andā¦do that.ā
there. the deck hasnāt moved, of course, from when he was gripping onto it earlier like it was the only stable thing in the world, but itās still nice to have it in his hands again. Aichi places it in the space between them, rifling through a few of the cards to pull out specifics.
āitās, um, called Cardfight Vanguard. itās really popular, whereā¦Iām from. these guys are Gold Paladins, and theyāreā¦ā and he almost says my friends, but while itās nice enough to talk about cards, talking about speaking to them is off limits even to the friends back home, so Aichi puts a stop to that line of thought right there and there. āI met a lot of my friends through them,ā he settles on. Wingal and Flogal Liberator sit next to the deck, and Aichi lingers as he finds one last card.Ā
Blaster Blade doesnāt fit with the rest of the deck, so he puts him back in his pocket.
(he misses his friends, a lot, but itās still probably better to be out of their way. he brought them aĀ lot of trouble.)
ā...itāsā¦kind of lonely here, huh?ā
cutwarmthā
Aichi. Okay. Rui can keep that in mind; itās a Japanese name too, so he knows itāll stick in his mind easier. Itās a lot more difficult when the name is made of sounds Rui isnāt used to, but AichiĀ is something familiar.
(Itās almost funny that theyāre both thinking that. Or would have been, maybe, if either one had said it out loud instead of just staring at each other and failing to socialize properly for absolutely too long.)
āOh,āĀ Rui continues. He hadnāt ā thought of that. Of last names. He doesnāt ever give his when he introduces himself, because he doesnāt feel like heās been Rui AyakiĀ in a long time. Not since he was human.Ā āSendou-san.ā He tries it out loud, and it sounds⦠fine, so heāll probably stick to it. Ruiās not the most polite person, though admittedly remembering his human life did instill some of that back into him, but Aichi-sanĀ sounds too familiar. More than heās comfortable with.
ā⦠weā¦ā
ā⦠can? Do last names. Itās just that I donāt ā Iām just Rui.ā Which isnāt the whole truth, but it isnāt anything he needs to go explaining. Heās in school⦠Rui, obviously, isnāt, so he canāt give his school, either, which just adds to the heavy layer of awkwardness in the air. At least Aichiās stepped inside, even if Rui has to glance around in the hopes of alleviating some of the inability to hold a conversation. It doesnāt work, to nobodyās surprise.
āWe have another housemate, my bāā ā no he canāt say that. Heād get embarrassed.Ā āEr, so Hanakoāll be around, at some point. Thereās⦠uh⦠my cat, Himari, if you like cats⦠and⦠some food, in the kitchen. You can ā go to the store? If you need to go to the store.ā
Conversational skills? Ten out of ten.
ā⦠Iāve⦠been here for. A little bit. I suppose if you need someone to show you around ā not⦠not around the house, around ā in general. I⦠could. At some point.ā
Ten out of ten.
the san is oddly comforting, if a little unexpected. something familiar, like the name before it, and Aichi manages to smile in a way that isnāt completely forced.
the lack of last nameā¦probably means nothing, honestly. he shouldnāt pry, except for the fact that theyāre balancing around each other and Aichi hasnāt come out and said a single word about the fact that Rui is probably absolutely not human. (itād be rude. he really wants to ask. he shouldnāt ask. but -)
thereās a cat?Ā
āoh, I, um, I like cats!ā something else familiar. itās a little warmer. āthereās a cat at the card shop I go to, actually,ā and the words are moving quicker now, something he can talk about and pretend heās not somewhere else entirely.
āsheās Sub-manager. sheās really cute, and I like to pet her, but weāre not supposed to spoil her or sheāll get all clingy and then no one can do any work, you know? but I also like dogs, like Wingal and Flogal, and I can show you them though theyāre not really real theyāre just -ā
ah.
ācards,ā Aichi says a little too late for his brain to stop him. ātheyāreā¦um. f-from a card game.ā
heās been moving around the house a little as he talked, and the realization makes him take a full step back from Rui, looking down at the floor. it could be some sort of record how badly heās messed up this conversation.Ā
after all, theyāre not friends. (and probably wonāt be, if Aichi continues on like this.)
ā...itās okay,ā he finally adds. āyou donāt - you donāt have to do that. I donāt want toā¦impose.ā
cutwarmthā
Rui has had ā someĀ level of experience, kind of, with having to socialize. Being thrust into two entirely separate instances of ending up in a world that isnāt your own (regardless, when you should be dead) will apparently give you at least someĀ semblance of how to communicate with other people.
Of course, every time Rui thinks something along these lines he ends up immediately making a complete and total fool of himself.
For instance, instead of saying his name Rui promptly freezes and just staresĀ for what is absolutely a moment uncomfortably too long.
ā⦠erā¦ā
āYour⦠housemate⦠I presume?ā
That ā probably isnāt what the boy had meant, though, is it? Rui hadnāt expected a new housemate already, is all, so an unfamiliar face walking into the cabin has caught him more than a little off-guard. A pale-white boy staring at you and barely answering your question probably isnāt very comfortable, though. Rui purses his lips in thought for a second, and then tries again.
āUh.Ā My name is Rui,āĀ and thatās ā so far, so good, isnāt it? Thatās how normal people who are definitely one-hundred percent human introduce themselves, right? As if guided by Hanakoās unfortunately-ever-present hand, Rui gives a nod. Like heās proud of himself, or something.Ā āI, uh, live here. I guess you do now, too. Or else all the keys to all the cabins are the same.ā
Which would probably be worrisome, and also something Rui would have to make sure Hanako doesnāt ever figure out. He sighs and raises a hand to run it through his hair before adding on,
āYou can come further inside? Iām not going to eat you. Itās your house.ā
Even if he does look like⦠this. And does eat⦠well, people. At least he has manners.
Sort of.
there sure is a whole lot of not talking going on.
the thing is, actually - Aichi knows how to deal with loud people. people who drag him into things and wonāt take no for an answer.
something a bit more like himself, thoughā¦he doesnāt know whether to take it at face value. the words he hears are slow and halting, and Aichi feels his stomach drop a little, like thereās tension heās completely missed.Ā
he tries to nod along (Rui, itās a nice name. Aichi didnāt expect an almost familiar name, like someone he could have known back at school) but his eyes drop back down to his feet without even a conscious effort.
āIām, umā¦ā heās going to mess this up. heās going to mess this up, and Aichi feels kinda desperate to stay out of sight.
āI-Iām Aichi.ā thatās all he needs to say, probably, but Aichi hates feeling like this and doesnāt want to just stand there and say nothing like he hasnāt changed at all, so his mouth keeps moving without his input. āum, Sendou Aichi, I donāt know if weāre doing last names or not. do they matter? I mean, um, I guess they donāt. Iām a - a first year at Miyaji Academy, though I guess thatās not here either, and um, I, uhā¦āĀ Ā
Aichi trails off before he mentions the deck of cards heās still holding onto like a lifeline, as if the person he can be when cardfighting will somehow take his place. he nods again, then a second time - though not like heās really agreeing to anything - and steps a little further inside.
āt-thanks,ā he mumbles. āitāsā¦nice to meet you, Ruiā¦kun.ā
@connectingblade
āDid you break in?ā is the only thing he says before popping up, floating around all the while, looking the other boy up and down. he folds his arms, nodding, like heās deep in thought.
āWe had another person here before, but they left. If youāre moving in⦠Are you any good at cleaning?ā
hanako stops in place when he gets to in front of him, raising a finger to his own mouth.
āI donāt clean, so, I probably wonāt pick up after you. Thereās something going on in the town, too. Iād say you came at a good time. Wanna go? There should be a lot to do.ā
Aichi definitely doesnāt make some sort of strangled squeak at the question. (well, the squeak is less at the question and more at the fact that there is someone - floating? around him?) (heās being haunted, or something. this is oddly less terrifying than he thought - Aichi just guesses this is what his life is like now.)
āIĀ - I live here,ā comes the response, a little too quickly. he doesnāt actually know if he does? but thereās nowhere else to really go, so he nods, more to himself than anything.Ā
and then - cleaning? heās never been too good at the whole chores thing. that always required getting out of bed, and that seemed like...a lot of energy. or it used to, anyway - if itās what he needs to do to stay somewhere, it should be okay. probably.
a strained kind of smile and more nods are all Aichi can really offer. if heās supposed to say no to any of this, itās moving too fast for him to, so he just kinda hopes the smile doesnāt look too forced. it sounds fun! heās okay with staying here! heāll go wherever!
āyouāre, um, really energetic,ā he adds on as an afterthought. he feels a little swept away here, but theyāre roommates now? or something like that. itās good to get along with people...!

@cutwarmthā
maybe itās bad for Aichi to flinch when he enters the cabin numbered the same as his key. maybe itās bad to hold the cards in his jacket pocket tightly, like a lifeline, to make sure heās where he seems to be. (he doesnāt feel out of the ordinary. heās here, wherever here is.)
thereās someone else in the cabin. that shouldnāt beā¦abnormal. of course there would be other people. heās not isolated.
itās - just -
the greeting is caught in his throat. (maybe heās scared.)Ā
āum -ā
itās not exactly a word. Aichi wavers there. thereās a small part of him that really, really wants to run away.
youāre not human. he doesnāt say that, because itās the first person heās met and he wonāt say that and maybe heās the only human here! maybe itās another world entirely. but he thinks it, and then follows that thought with they look pretty, which is easier to prove true than the first statement but something heās not even slightly going to say.
ā¦theyāre about the same height. heās not going to bring that up, either.Ā
Aichiās been standing here saying nothing for quite some time now, so he should either run or actually try and say something, and because bravery is still a foreign concept but one he can finally touch, he clutches the key to his chest and says -
āwho are youā¦?ā
which, still, isnāt a start. (the key isnāt bravery, after all.)

ābecause, it was my dream to fight you like this!ā
aichi sendou, somehow champion of a card game circuit, just wants to sleep in
for all intents and purposes just an overly self-conscious high schooler who really likes card games! shy and avoids conflict as much as he can - but fighting in games is another story.
sixteen with a lot of issues. kinda nervous around new people. and yet it does not take much interaction for him to like you heās the king of one-sided relationships
if you talk to him enough though he may end up talking your ear off about either card game lore or space. sometimes both if youāre lucky
really short. haha why are you so small
has a really hard time saying no to people so yes he will be dragged along into situations and yes he will just smile and nod
though when he gets into something he can be both incredibly stubborn and worryingly obsessed. heās just a little desperate for approval
