What the FCA is actually looking for during a supervisory visit: It is simpler than most people think. 1. Consistency Do your policies describe what actually happens? When the FCA speaks to your Compliance Officer and then interviews a front-line adviser, do they hear the same story? Inconsistency between documentation and practice is the single most common finding. 2. Evidence Policies alone mean very little without evidence of implementation. The FCA wants monitoring reports, training records, MI dashboards, and complaint handling logs. If you cannot produce evidence that your framework is operating, the FCA will assume it is not. 3. Culture How Senior Managers talk about compliance. How the firm responds to findings. Whether there is a genuine appetite for improvement. These are harder to quantify but equally significant. Most firms get caught not because they are doing things wrong, but because they cannot demonstrate they are doing things right.
