“I think it’s hilarious people assume they’re dating just because they’re nice to each other.”

“I need to hang out with someone I like, can we pretend to be working for an hour?”

“Tea and coffee? What happened?”

“Here you go, one forgotten, left it at home in a rush, lost item!”

“I’m going for a walk, you want anything?”

“… sorry I took a nap on you.”

“I suppose I am now requisitioned to being a napping spot.”

“I think it’s great to know what you want, Haruhi. I’m sure you will be great with your major” he says happily. Mei smiles at her. 

“Oh if we’re in the same dorm maybe after your class we can go to dining hall, grab a meal and walk together to our dorm. I wouldn’t mind waiting until your class is over or I could always pick you up after class if you’re worried I’d be bored which like I said I won’t be”.

 Mei knew he was being rather sweet to this person but something about them made him just want to talk to them and be with them and learn all about them.

 “I didn’t meant to sound like I’m imposing anything. I just find you interesting and want to know more about you. This walk to the library ain’t enough time to get to know a person in my personal opinion” he says with a chuckle

  “Plus you’re one of the first person i’ve actually had a chance to talk to since I’ve been here. Everyone else been too busy minding their own business to actually introduce themselves to me and vice versa. Even if it was a random encounter by me bumping into you I’m rather glad that I did”.

  Mei felt his cheeks blush as he said all this. He didn’t know why he said what he did but he knew he meant it. “Uh yeah sorry. Rambling again. But look we’re almost at the library” he says as he points at the library merely now two blocks away, its high tower now in view.

The reassurance was... nice. Haruhi stared idly at Mei, only glancing away to stare at the path to ensure that she wouldn’t bump into someone else. “Thanks, Mei. I sure hope so.”  Warmth pooled in her cheeks.

“I’m afraid I’m rather busy with classes all day today. When this class ends I have to go immediately to the general education building, and then I even have a class toward the back-end of Stonheart’s campus, and it’s just... an overall busy day,” she lamely finished. Guiltily she looked away from him. It just sounded like she was making excuse that weren’t even good. But there was no good reason for Mei to wait for her; today was one of the terrible days where her schedule was packed.

“Mhmm.” Her lips pressed into a thin line as she stared at the ground. Her brows furrowed together as she sighed. Haruhi was also busy, and admittedly she didn’t want to get dragged into anything that could distract her from her studies--after all, it was imperative for her to have a good first semester to keep her in the running for potential scholarships for the next year. “I’m not much different. I’ve been trying to keep to myself too,” she admitted. “Even then, it’s kinda rude to introduce themselves when first talking to someone. We’re in college. It wouldn’t do good to forget our manners.”

Haruhi hugged her books closer to her chest as she stared at the imposing library, feeling something akin to when she first stared at Ouran. It was warming to think about her old school. Even if keeping to herself was something that she wanted to do, it was probably near impossible for her to do so. Haruhi Fujioka was just too used to people.

Mei couldn’t help but smile. “It definitely won’t be a distraction. And that does sound interesting. I have yet to explore Onyx Library so maybe I’ll find a book or two while I’m there” he says before matching up with their steps.

“You never told me your major, Haruhi and what year you are” he states matter of factly. “And since I was rambling you probably missed it but I’m a Freshman and I have yet to decide on my major”. 

Mei crosses his arms behind his head as he walks cheerfully next to Haruhi. “But I’m probably going to do something with business or engineering I think. I’m not quite sure yet so that’s why I didn’t declare one. Still figuring it out y’know?”

Haruhi was only mildly paying attention to her pace, realizing that it would be a lost cause to try to speed up her pace to keep with someone with long legs. It was one of the downsides to being so short, but she learned to work with it. Luckily, he slowed himself, and she puffed out a breath of relief.

“I’m sure they have a large selection of books that are for leisure.” Her brow furrowed as she tapped her chin. “Maybe I’ll check out a book or two after my class. Since I’ll be there.” It actually sounded like a delightful plan; she was unable to bring her books from back home.

“I”m pre-law,” she answered. She blinked in response. You’re only a freshman? Me too,” she mused. She was honestly guessing he was a sophomore or a junior. “We must be in the same dorm. I haven’t really left my room too much... So it’s not that surprising that I haven’t seen you.”

Mei chuckles. “Oh. Sorry. Was I rambling? My bad. Oh so you go to Stoneheart too? That’s great. Now I know someone else besides my roommate who goes to the school” he says happily.

“Anyways, Haruhi, Where were you heading? Maybe I could walk with you there. I was going to the student store but I think there is a huge line right now. So I can just go later. Of course I don’t want impose but if you don’t mind me tagging along that would be great. We can get to know each other better this way that’s all” he suggests. Mei knew he may be over friendly but it was in his nature to be. He loved making new friends.

There was nothing wrong with the cheerfulness that Mei exerted. But after not being around her own overly happy friends for quite a few weeks, the brunette simply wasn’t accustomed to such exuberant behavior. “Just a bit,” she said, the remnants of her joke no longer hiding in her voice. She would need more coffee sooner rather than later.

It wouldn’t be surprising if there was a line at the school store. “If it isn’t too much of a burden, then I think it would be nice,” she said. “My English class is meeting in Onyx Library today. Something about... teaching us research techniques.” Her nose crinkled at the thought, wondering how there could be an entire class session about it. But she wasn’t one to ask those questions.
