Vincent’s home at Red Rocket. He can’t settle in one place after…after Nora. He can’t stand to be in his old house, so the old garage was the first place he hung his hat. Shaun lives here with uncle ‘Diesel Dan’. There’s a power armour frame with added grab rails for when Proctor Ingram visits. Vin keeps most of his comic collection and all his Bobbleheads here. Sheffield is head of the small farm and Piper and Dogmeat are often around, as is good ol’ Codsworth.
Boxcar homes are fairly popular, but here’s another quick unconventional home idea for you or your settlers: shipping container homes! They can be stacked on top of each other or placed side by side to create scrappy, wasteland apartments, and you can decorate the insides to give them a more personal touch. Glitching a door onto the front also proves surprisingly easy!
You can find these shipping containers in a variety of colors in the Unlock Settlement Objects mod (PC/XB1/PS4) in the structures tab.
Minutemen Outpost: Hangman’s Alley
I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve started building here only to scrap everything in Bradley’s save. I finally settled on making an outpost for a small contingent of Minutemen since it seems practical to have a base of operations for the militia in the city proper.
There’s a small workshop and armory, common area, barracks, and quarters for the general to stay in when he’s passing though. The alley is also home to two militia pups, Bailey and Tulip.
Here’s another quick idea for those of you who might want to build a home-away-from-home in the Commonwealth or in Far Harbor: a boat house! (No, not like Taffington...) It’s not the roomiest of living quarters, but it can be a cozy place for you or your settlers to get some rest.
You can find this boat (and a few other boat pieces) in the Unlock Settlement Objects mod (PC/XB1/PS4) in the structures tab.

Starting today (the 20th) until the end of January, the Commonwealth Challenge blog is going to focus on player homes. This includes: •Player home tours, builds and screencaps •Featured mods •Tips and Tutorials
Does your Sole Survivor live in a Wasteland mansion or a humble boxcar? Do they favor Home Plate or perhaps their original home in Sanctuary? Whatever the case, this is the time to share it! Use the “Complete the Commonwealth” tag, message a link to this blog, or submit a settlement to the challenge so your creation can be featured on the blog. Throughout the duration of Way Back Home I’ll be giving out little awards (such as “Most Livable Boxcar”) and possibly a few prizes for really creative homes! Your home can be at any settlement within the game (not just Home Plate), and you’re welcome to have multiple homes featured.
If you have any requests for tips and tutorials, be sure to send them in. Most importantly, have fun!
Just a quick reminder that this is still going on, and some clarifications.
If you want to submit more than one player home, whether it be on the same or a different Sole Survivor, that’s fine. Maybe you have a properly decked out Home Plate, but you’ve also made some Overseer’s quarters you like in Vault 88. If you want a time share at multiple settlements, go for it!
The best way to make sure your post is picked up, apart from submitting it to the challenge directly, is to just send it in a message to this blog.
I finally finished rebuilding Sanctuary Hills!
Residents can enjoy perks such as the town’s small chapel, a combination library/museum, a recreation building, and the towns largest bar: The Rusty Musket.
This settlement also includes player houses I made for @faliout‘s sole James, and @andoy-thedeathclawborn‘s sole Andoy.
At final count, Sanctuary took about 119 hours to complete.
An eminently livable and very impressive build of Sanctuary Hills!
My Dalton Farm build!
Unlike with Sanctuary, I wanted this place to feel less planned out, as if it had expanded around the lighthouse haphazardly as the population expanded. I’m not sure how long this actually took me since I’ve been working on it on and off for several months.
This settlement fits in very organically with Far Harbor. Well done!
if i'd like to join the challenge, how would i do that? do i just send u an ask saying i'd like to join, or is there something else that i'd need to do? Also, what are the rules regarding mods?
Hey, Anon! You can find the rules for the challenge here. If you’re interested in participating, the basic breakdown goes like this:•You submit settlements via a form so the challenge can keep track of what’s been done.•Progress is recorded on the Challenge roster. This can include both finished and WiP settlements.•You’re welcome to submit your work to the blog via the tag “complete the commonwealth” and/or by messages to this blog without actually joining the challenge! The challenge is mostly for folks who want to participate in the long term goal of completing most of the settlements in the game and see what others with similar goals have done. It’s not a race to finish, either.•The only restriction on mods is for ones that give you pre-made finished settlements or player homes. If you use unlimited-resources mods or console commands for that purpose you’re still welcome to join, but it would be nice to let people know if you’re working with that particular advantage. This isn’t a contest but unlimited resources is still a pretty massive cheat.
You can use multiple Sole Survivors, just indicate who’s who when submitting the settlement. I’m already including tags for specific Sole Survivors with “SolSu *first name*” so that specific characters can be found if desired.
Some recent pictures of Bradley’s home, The Barn! I’ve made a handful of changes since I first built the place, but I think the biggest improvement is repairing all of the windows. now the place can appeal to his aesthetic and be warm and cozy.

If you’re looking for a unique home for your Sole Survivor that feels wasteland and lore friendly, you might want to check out this mod which adds build-able airplane parts. There are only six different airplane pieces available, so it is a fairly small mod, and some of the pieces are rather large to use at most settlements. Those quibbles aside, this mod gives you promising new set pieces to use. And the best part... all the pieces are fully navmeshed, meaning you can easily decorate them and your settlers can navigate them without issue! This mod could be great for adding interest to some of the more prosaic settlement locations (like Murkwater Construction site, pictured here).

so this is the house that Vaughn Zander built for him, Hancock and their son, Shaun. It’s located in Sanctuary Hills, its the last house on the street…
In third pic, after the stairs, its Vaughn’s “bedroom” (we say bedroom, we tried to make walls but its imposible but lets pretend there are walls for the bedroom), also upstairs is Shaun’s room.
My current Home Plate feat. this creepy monkey toy
After the fall of the Institute, and with Nate gone and MacCready gone back to the Capital Wasteland Molly couldn’t live in her old Sanctuary Hills home any longer, too many memories. So she takes Shaun and moves to the house next door.
Although these are sad times for her - Christmas is just over the horizon and when Sturges finds an old tree, Nick makes an effort to bring back some lights from Diamond City.
It’s gonna take some time to settle in to this new life, but with her friends and newly acquired family in the form of Shaun, she’ll make it work.
Molly always does.

I finally got around to uploading a tour of (Sole Survivor) Ian Malcolm’s Home Plate! This is his home base where he stashes all his valuables, loot and uh… trophies. I definitely wanted to give him a home that fit his persona well, and while I could probably expand upon this with mods in the future, this captures him quite well.
