Somewhere in the Between

So I have been quite scarce on tumblr the last...forever. College and stuff, y’know? Anyway. I have very much missed this side of the internet. I am in need of some help and support and would be touched if I could get some much needed reinforcement.

I have recently graduated from UCF with my BFA in Studio Art, and a specialization in photography. I was excited to jump into the art world and participate in some way and keep my momentum going post-grad, so I submitted a project proposal for the upcoming Art in Odd Places festival taking place in Orlando, Florida this November. I was accepted into the festival and now comes the magic of pulling it all together. My idea came to be in light of the recent Pulse tragedy that took place in Orlando this past June. As an Orlando resident and Florida native, my project seems quite timely. It’s called Positive Process Platform, (yeah I’m a sucker for alliteration.)  

It is a performance piece involving the engagement of strangers in passing. Pairs of strangers will meet in silence for one minute, sharing simply energy, eye contact, and understanding. The participants will proceed to photograph each other with instant film cameras. They will also write down something kind, a poem, a compliment, a fun fact– anything positive to accompany their photo exchange.

These small and awkward, yet tangible interactions are open invitations to be engaged, and mindful of others and the exceptional potential the public sphere holds. This piece intends to distinguish the sublime nature of human interaction and community. Hate and bigotry cannot be welcomed in a public sphere, and we should never be fearful of expressing love, positivity, and compassion.
