I'M AWAKE
HI Hi hi hi....
In Restless Dreams I Walk Alone
He watched his brothers features - there were things that came across - emotions that flooded onto Pestilenceâs face that he wished he didnât have to see. That word - broken - flashed through his head again. The few words he had heard from War when they had spoken before. Famine didnât approve. Yet - he was the man in the middle of the field while the others had taken their sides. He had no quarrel for now - opinions and judgments but no quarrel. Would he make one? Which side would he take? Because, apparently, the rope had grown too tight - snapped - and that fatal line had been drawn down between his brothers.
His attention went back to his brother - Famine frowned. Anything to happen to him. Really, what had happened here? Things that he had not been around for, perhaps things would have gone differently if he would have arrived sooner rather than later. And, better than all of this? Pestilence and him had always had a bit of a sibling rivalry. Pest was acting different - this was all different. Appreciative, affectionate, and afraid. These were things that he had not known Pestilence to be before now.
The smile though, and the brush of hand at his wrist made him falter - his thoughts stopping. Famine sighs, He takes Pestilenceâs wrist gently in his hand - pulling him over the table slightly. Gently. Just so they are inches away from one another. âYouâve changed.â He voices to the other, blinking as his eyes flit away before looking back at him. He letâs go - leaning back a bit, but they are still close.
âI donât know what to say to you. I suppose - I can thank you for your worry. Itâs new.â He smiles - itâs a small, tight thing, but genuine. Tight because he is still worried over Pest himself. âI am worried for you.â Itâs a lament - Famine tilts his head, emotion flooding into his black eyes. But he controls those depths - and the emotion is there briefly, allowing Pestilence a look deep into him before he blocks it off and goes back to the breakfast - going to pull out plates and eating utensils.Â
There it was again, this moment of intensity that burned Pestilence a little in a way he wasn't familiar with anymore. He had felt something like it long before all of this shit occurred, back when War was his guardian and confidante. Back when he was a shoulder to cry on and arms to hold the younger brother, before he'd left his mark and dragged Pestilence down into his control. It was warm and bright, this feeling, and so intense he felt he might suffocate. But it was also quick and ended as Famine turned away again. Pestilence let out a breath quietly and looked down at the floor.
Shameful, stupid little Pest.
Famine made a heroically-sized breakfast, quick as you like, and Pestilence ate contently with his brother. Famine, of course, took the lion's share, but left more than enough to satisfy his older brother. Pestilence smiled with him and laughed quietly as they talked of untroubling things, and perhaps once or twice Pestilence felt his foot brush the younger's.
It was nice.
He cleaned the dishes. He was good at it. It barely took a thought and all the filth was gone, leaving them to only be replaced in their cupboards. He did that too, seeing as Famine was quite a bit shorter now (the difference in height was refreshing and endearing. Famine had to look up to meet his eyes now.)
All this domesticity calmed Pestilence enormously, even as he stretched to put away certain dishes and pans where they ought to be. He felt Famine watching him though, quietly, which was more than a little odd for his blabber-mouth baby brother. He regained his footing and straightened his bedshirt, which had come up in his stretching, as he asked him, "Why are you looking at me like that?"
In Restless Dreams I Walk Alone
Itâs unknown why - but when Famine hears the vase smash - it sets him off and before you know it heâs laughing like it was the best thing in the world. He hadnât seen it coming from Pestilence, maybe that had something to do with it. Famine was still at a loss for this - how things were going.
Then he realized. Perhaps War really has broken Pestilence. He had assumed that no matter how bad things were, the other would at least have some sort of hope. It really does sicken him to know that one of his brothers could do this to another. He doesnât get from it that he should leave War alone. No, his own destructive force can be just as much as his brothers. He has not utilized the true potential in what seems like forever - but he is itching to have at it now. His own true form, so to speak, by now, had to be huge. Beyond huge. It grew with each soul he had eaten. Stored away in his unearthly form. And oh, how he had eaten in the past centuries. Desperate to be whole once again.
The fact that Pestilence is happy that he is there is something he hears - eyes flickering toward him for a moment as he had lowered himself so he could get the eggs at the bottom of the fridge. He ponders it - nose wrinkling at the smell of the fridge before itâs all gone - all good as new. He doesnât smile, but he does hum in satisfaction for a short moment.
He is grabbing a griddle from a bottom cabinet and then a couple of frying pans - setting to work on eggs and bacon and pancakes. Famine hears Pestilence. He does. âI hope that youâre defending your own decision instead of attempting to influence mine.â Itâs not as sharp as it should be and he is staring at the eggs sizzling in the frying pan. âHunger is stubborn and persistant.â His eyes finally go to Pestilence - and they are the dark and bottomless depths of what they used to be. âYou know why I look like this?â He asks suddenly.
Famine finds a spatula - turning over a pancake as the edges start to bubble - the side up is a perfect golden brown. âSure. I like this form, I suppose. Death says itâs fitting.â Pause. âBut this isnât what I used to look like. Itâs symbolic to me - when I was a more reserved creature and now I am doing what I like because after so long, I am in power of myself again. But itâs not enough.â Not even he knows what to say next. Probably something about how, even though he is near as strong as he used to be all of those years ago, he wants to be stronger. He is gaining on that everyday. Famine knows there is symbolism in how he looks from now to then. Maybe this younger form than his old reserved appearence meant he was stronger now. But either way, there was something personal about it, even if he was not able to describe it correctly.
Pestilence rubbed at the stubble forming on his chin, watching his little brother work through the kitchen. Babbling on about his form and meaning that he didn't bother to understand. Pick whatever form best held the beast within, as the older sibling saw it. Death was concealed as a fragile, decrepit old man, belying the power he held. War was an alluring beauty of a man, tricking fools one by one to bow to his whim. He pondered that bitterly. Himself, he tried for something unassuming. He didn't much care for interaction though he commanded respect and he tried to find a form that suited that. Although maybe his form was too disarming. Too beaten. Too... submissive.
Regret flooded his chest. How many time would he set himself up for failure?
In his reverie, he didn't notice his brother's rambling had come to a stop and the younger was standing before him, far too close inside his personal space. But most people within a 10 foot radius were inside his personal space, so Pest gave him leniency and grunted to signal his notice.
"I just don't want anything to happen to you," Pestilence tried groping for his original point in the conversation, before the derailment into moping about his current situation, "You're better than all of this. Seriously."
His green eyes caught Famine's black ones for a brief second and he saw the flare of rebellion in them. As it was the youngest's way, in all things. Pestilence smiled lightly for a second, fondness for his brother overcoming his previous worry and shame. He reached out hesitantly and brushed his wrist; the best he could do for a fond gesture.
"I worry about you," he admitted quietly.
That one time Alastair and Pest crossed paths and then everything was awful the end

I've been upset lately sorry Famine I will respond tomorrow
In Restless Dreams I Walk Alone
Famine feels a slight drop in tension within himself as Pestilence lets go of him. He turns his head to watch him - laughing as he hears the others stomach growl. The younger rolls over onto his stomach - staring up at the back wall and headboard. "I suppose that I could make you something. Is the fridge stocked?" His words are slow - carefully chosen. Falling back into his own pace from before he was turned into a cripple.
Pestilence's fingers at his back - felt through the thin shirt, cause him to shudder. He turns his head just enough so he can observe his brother before just letting him do as he pleases. Eventually - when he thinks the other is finished - he pulls away and fluidly rolls out of the bed. "Coming?" He drawls before slinking out to find the kitchen.
Pestilence follows without a word, padding behind his flighty little brother through the empty halls. The opulence is wasted on them. Pestilence knocks over a vase on his way down the stairs. The shattering china calms him.
"I'm happy you're here," he says quietly as they wander through the kitchen. He leans against the counter and watches Famine gather the supplies to make breakfast. Pestilence clears the food of spoils and infestation. It das been a while since anyone went shopping. He smiles to himself as the mold dies away and the food is as fresh as grocery-bought can provide.
"Families have to stick together," He continues, feeling it's something like his duty to say so, "We're stuck with each other for eternity, might as well try to get along."
He pauses, fingering at his scar, "Sometimes it means making sacrifices to keep the peace. Especially when the other one won't back down."
Pestilence catches Famine in a firm look, "Do you understand?"
Splintered Glass :: Pestilence & War
This blubbering and pitiful show of apologizing made the tyrannical Horsemanâs lips curl into a pleased smirk, eyes turned downward to his brother. The smirk nearly falters at the confession of love given from Pestilence, momentarily caught off guard and rightfully confused. HeâŚwell, he didnât understand why Pestilence would feel anything of the sort towards him save for fear. Before War can address it, Pestilence is doing exactly as he was commanded, on his knees with his neck bared in submission to him.Â
War watches him. Watches him sob and beg for forgiveness. Itâs always thrilling to watch his sibling break before him. As for Death, he considered the older Horseman to be down and out for the count. Itâs not as if Death could hurt him, he knows very well the consequences of his actions. Two down, one more to go. If that one more ever shows up, of course, or has the stupidity to challenge him. War hopes Famine makes the correct decision.Â
The Horseman snorts at hearing that term again. That confession. Profession. A hand reaches out to curl into Pestilenceâs hair, yanking him back onto his feet, fingers pulling on that hair so neck is bared before him. War leans forward and presses a platonic kiss on Pestilenceâs jugular, brief and gentle. âIâm confused, Pest, than why did you fight me? Disobey me if you love me?â he questions maliciously, feigning interest. âWhy do you continue to fight me?âÂ
Gradually those long fingers uncurl from Pestilenceâs hair, a lone finger dragged down across a dirty cheek. There it taps Pestilence on his cheekbone, tutting and scolding. Itâs a pleasure yanking and burning Pestilence, always enjoying causing harm to his sibling. Itâs his nature. When the opportunity presents himself, he takes it. Caring little of others and other forms of prosocial behavior escaped War and it only made the brutal breaking down of others all the more pleasurable. But Pestilence was a treat. Something he can come back to time and time again and get that same tune out of him if he squeezed and choked hard enough.
âIf you love me, Pest, why on earth are you so cruel to me?â he pouts, taunting and harassing like a feline to a ball of yarn. He chuckles, deep and warm. The finger moves to the collar of Pestilenceâs shirt, pulling it down to see that ugly mark heâs laid on his own brother. The audacity of such an action, but there it is. A sign that this is his and his alone. Fingers push past the collar of the shirt to touch it, cobalt eyes examining the scarred mark. âHave you forgotten that youâre mine?â War asks, tone considerably changing into something demanding and possessive, fingers digging into the mark. âTake off the shirt,â he heaves out, âI wonât ask twice.âÂ
The world is bright and hot and painful to Pestilence. The tears won't stop and the heaving in his chest is making him dizzy. He is pulled from his frantic meditation by War grabbing his short-cropped hair and yanking him to his feet. A cry dies on his lips and only turns into a whimper. He can't think. He babbles helplessly.Â
"I won't," he rasps in promise, tears rolling down his cheeks, "I'll be good, I promise, I love you...!"
He never meant to hurt him.
The thought twists in his brain like a knife. Deeper, deeper. Pestilence chokes, drowning in his own tears.
He is released, knees week, body swaying. He feels like he's full of water, ready to tip and splash on the ground. Dull, dying green eyes regard his older brother. Why does he fight? Why does he hurt War like this? He tries to apologize, though the words just sound like sounds now.
He is exposed. Pestilence whimpers, bowing his head. His hands are quick to react, greedy to please his brother. He sheds his jacket and shirt, leaving him naked from the waist upâmore clothed than War but more exposed than words can say. He is on display for War now. The scar in his neck is fresh and bleeding. The blood slides down his chest slowly. The cut is deep. It feels like a molten knife carved its way into the base of his neck.
It is a collar.
Pestilence knows he will bear this mark for the rest of his life, healing powers useless against it. His form will change over the eons, but that scar, that brand will forever mark him. Something small inside him finds comfort in the idea. He is owned now. Protected.
Too bad his protector is also his abuser.
Pestilence dares to look up.

In Restless Dreams I Walk Alone
Pestilenceâs affectionate gestures have certainly surprised him that morning. âIâm sorry, brother. But, I am not suicidal. Unless you mean everyone but us.â Famineâs voice is slightly clipped - eyebrows drawn together. The other moves even close to him - and when he turns his head too look at him because of his last question - his brother is right. There. So close - millimeters.
He wants to make some smart comment - but he doesnât as his eyelids lower slightly. Itâs an odd look - debating almost. âLike I said - Iâm not suicidal.â Some small part of him wants to lean forward and run his tongue along that mark - just to see what sound the other makes. He chuckles at the thought - before turning his head to look at the ceiling again.
He isnât used to being nice and affectionate. Annoying and touchy - sure. But he has not felt genuine affection toward someone in a long while - had forgotten the feel of it. But some part of him remains hollow - that part that was still weak and fragile and packed away - and itâs painfully black and cracking - crippling to the soul.
His heart is hammering in his chest. He doesn't let people get that close. It always ends in disaster and that slimy, crawling feeling in his skin. Plus, who knew what would happen if War should find out. The scar burns a little more at the thought. Part of him wants to feel the burn go deeper, just enough to kill him, but another part mentally slaps him for thinking such an idiotic idea. There is a way out. There always is. He's lived long enough to see that, in the end, everything has its place. Things will get better.
He hopes so, anyway. Pestilence draws his knees up and rubs at his face.
His stomach growls, no doubt affected by his little brother's presence. Normally he skips breakfast in favor of trying to sleep in but with the sun slowly spilling through the curtains and another day beginning, Pestilence knows to give up on sleep. The heaviness of exhaustion pulls him back down to the mattress with a thump and a sigh.
"You should make breakfast," he murmurs at Famine, the best cook in the family. For obvious reasons. His hand drifts to Famine's lower back, prodding the dip between the curve of his spine and his tailbone. He counts the notches of his lumbar inside his head and hopes Famine doesn't mind. The brief touches of walking up his brother's spine, labeling each bump, relaxes him immensely. His stomach growls softer. Idly, he wonders if Famine would let him dissect him a bit, but he doesn't ask. Breakfast is enough for now.

⪠Pestilence [3/4]-âSo, youâve got to wonder why God pours all his love into something so messyâŚAnd weak.Itâs ridiculous.â
In Restless Dreams I Walk Alone
Famine is actually surprised when the other listens - the rot and other things fading away - the house creaking on itself as it seems to go back to most of its former glory. âYou donât have to hide the scar. Iâve seen worse.â Famine chuckles - reaching a hand up between them to run a finger lightly over what is showing of it in that gap.
âAh. So you're a pessimist now too? Well, I suppose youâve always been one of those.â He doesnât like all of this talk - itâs not about the world ending - he is allied with Lucifer after all. But itâs the fact that Pestilence is so obviously falling into a spiraling pit of despair. âWhy are you torturing yourself like this? You are chained - I understand - you think there is no hope. There is always at least a light at the end of the tunnel - there has to be something good about this situation that allows you to look at it from a different angle.â He says - heatedly - frowning.
His big brothers - always getting themselves into messes. At least Death wasnât supposed to - well, look at them all now. If it was a thing about horsemen getting themselves into trouble in Dallas than it seemed that Famine would be doomed in weeks to come, wouldnât it? Perhaps he could learn from his brothers mistakes - there was a reason he hadnât come straight to Dallas after being fixed - this was why he wasnât destined to be around his brothers all of the time. Look what happened.
Pestilence closes his eyes a bit when Famine traces the shadow of his collar. The skin is hot and sensitive. He grunts, head dipping forward again, heavy with sleep and depression. The more he talks about the whole thing, the less he likes about himself. But fair enough... he's been an idiot. Why should he like himself?
"The bright side is that it'll finally be over. All the squabbling and biting at each other..." Death will reap them all in War's wake and finally, finally, some quiet. The thought sounds unbearably tempting to Pestilence's exhausted mind. Finally, sleep.
He leans against Famine a bit, mind quietly working over the situation. He's done all he really can, he thinks. Time to lie back and accept what happens as consequence. He's too tired for anything else. Too tired to keep fighting. He's a beaten dog now, curled up in his doghouse, tethered to the ground and impotently snapping his jaws.
Pestilence regards his brother.
"What do you think?"

In Restless Dreams I Walk Alone
Famineâs social status was a mystery. In the old days - he enjoyed his solitude. Or perhaps he had merely enjoyed solitude from his brothers. He is surprised at the smile when he was sure that the other would be angry with him - or fall into a deeper despair or something. He watches with a curious look - licking his lips and wishing -
He should argue that Pestilence isnât an idiot. Heâs been going around insulting him and calling him a crybaby this whole time - this attests to this - but he obviously isnât going to say anything. He doesnât mind this - being nice to Pestilence. And the poor thing has been through so much.
Pest invites him over - Famine is hesitant but he slowly moves over there - moving like he has muscles in places he shouldnât before laying there beside him. At first he is tense - Pestâs arm going around his waist. Seems more than - Famine sighs and relaxes even though it goes against his own thoughts and what he is normally like. He wants to scoff - despite tending to not have anything really bad against War - he isnât afraid of him at all. Hungry is what War is. Famine is used to it - not intimidated by the greed and want for power.
Famine watches as the room seems to droop and he frowns. âQuit that.â He says somewhat softly. When his brother says it not such a big loss - he turns - his face dangerously close to his brothers. âWhat do you mean itâs not such a big loss?â Itâs sharp but quiet - heâs not about to speak at normal volume when the other is right there.
They share a breath as the wood perks up and the rot fades away. Noses brush. Pestilence grunts, looking away, the action showing his scarred neck all the more.
"This world. Why even bother anymore? These little petri dishes are trying for all they're worth to destroy it and each other. Why not let them? Why not bring on the apocalypse and end all this stupid dancing around?"
It's not what Daddy had in mind when he created them. But it's an end they were made for and the inevitability weighs heavily on all their shoulders. Pestilence's ache with it. Some days he wished War would really engulf the world once and for all and they could all just rest.
But that'd be too easy.
In Restless Dreams I Walk Alone
He hadn't meant for it to sound that way - regretting his words as his brother scowls. The way Pestilence fidgets. The way the blood rushes to his cheeks. Famine watches - not sure what to say.
"That's giving up. Not that - I realize that by now he has put you through a lot." Famine reaches forward - a hand on Pestilence's cheek - pulling it away slowly so it is like he is stroking the skin there. He doesn't know what else to say. Curiosity prods him to ask to see the thing. But that seems like it would be a bad idea. whole
"I'm sorry." Famine never, ever, ever says that. Ever.
Pestilence recognizes the effort and smiles for his brother's trouble. It's a sad but appreciative smile as he bows his head again. There is a long, peaceful silence between them as the morning grows brighter. Another sleepless night. But not a wasted one.
"I'm an idiot," Pestilence admits quietly, "I really. Truly am."
He smooths over the covers beside him, inviting Famine to take a closer place by his side. He does and he fits his arm around his waist; it's an intimate hold and they've never embraced like this before, but Pestilence is actually craving the comfort now and Famine is the right size.
"I did it for us," he's wistful now, remembering the initial intentions that brought him down this path, "For our family. They were fighting... War was going to destroy the world. He still might."
The futility is not lost on him. Pestilence sighs and the wood in the room decays slightly. It's how he feels. He regards Famine.
"It's not such a big loss, in the end."
