I’m a Fixer

I was reading through Heart’s archives recently, and I came across an interesting tag:

Fixer - Someone who is compulsively driven to solve other people’s problems (or perceived problems,) often at the expense of their relationship and their own mental health.

Anywhoo, the reason this tag is so interesting is because I’m a fixer. In a big way. It’s not healthy. And it became a problem on Thursday. I was in bad shape, emotionally, for reasons I won’t talk about, and Viola, being wonderful, was talking to me and giving me the support I needed. But the end result is that, as she was generally being a really good friend, I also turned the conversation around on her, to try to “fix” her own issue. I didn’t even realize I was doing it until she called me out on it.

And it was interesting to read what Heart has posted on the subject. It was interesting to realize how much my responses and my expectations align with hers. And it’s scary, and painful, to admit that this overwhelming desire to help, and to make people happy and healthy, is hurting the people I care about. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how to change this so I can begin to build healthy relationships. I don’t even know how to react.
