Journal Prompts
figured iâd take a stab at making some prompts. Tag me if you use them!! I wanna see what you make :>>>
1. Pick a year, maybe the year you/your friend/your crush was born. Find out important things that happened that year. The top song played on the radio, the movie that won at the oscars, any notable inventions?Â
2. Pick a color. Do everything in that color. Try different shades of the same color, or do it all in one shade for hard mode
3. Draw a self portrait without looking at yourself on one page, and another one while seeing your reflection/a picture of yourself
4. Make a playlist of your current favorite songs / use their lyricsÂ
5. Whatâs your favorite room? Your bedroom, a class room? Why do you like it? Whatâs in it? Draw it.Â
6. draw an alternative world. Maybe itâs the same as our current word but some people have horns? Maybe itâs a world entirely encompassed in an hourglass?Â
7. Are you superstitious? If yes, write/draw about you biggest superstition. If no, write/draw about one that interests you.Â
8. Where would you go on a roadtrip? Write/draw about the locations youâd love to see.
9. Write/draw about how you feel at 3am.Â
10. Whats your first ever memory?
11. Sit in front of a mirror and make 5 funny faces and draw yourself.Â
12. Write / draw your favorite myth.Â
13. Draw your handsÂ
14. Collect all the âleft overâ bits for a week: receipts, fruit stickers, notes, wrappers. Then make a journal page out of them.Â
15. Print out one of your favorite poems. Cut each word out and rearrange it. It probably wont make any sense but it will still somehow feel like your favorite poem.Â
How to Start an Art Journal
Here are some hints and tips to help encourage and inspire you!
1. Buy a journal or sketchbook with blank white pages so you can express yourself freely without the constriction of lines. (Or if you prefer lined pages, thatâs great too!) The thicker sketchbook pages are great for practice. If you donât want to go through the trouble of buying a journal, printer paper works as a good canvas.
**Using cardboard behind your pages when painting is a good technique to help keep paint from leaking and helps it dry faster.**
2. Purchase some basic art supplies like watercolor paints, acrylic paints, spray paints, letter stencils, colored pencils, multicolored sharpies, Staetdler fineliner pens, etc⌠These supplies donât have to be fancy and expensive to work. Take some time to figure out what you like to use and what effects you want to produce with your art.
**A lot of popular journaling techniques involve creating a watercolor background and a mixed media layered effect for their creations. But, this is about you! Get creative and experiment!**
3. Use words, quotes, images, mixed media, and simple and elaborate drawings to create personal pages that express who you are as an artist and writer.
**Get out of your comfort zone and draw things you wouldnât normally draw. If you donât like what youâre creating, give yourself time to grow and learn. Itâs important to be patient with yourself and let go of your high expectations. Give yourself credit for trying and keep practicing! Donât give up!**
4. To learn more about art journaling, you can always use Google for more information, look up tutorials on Youtube, check out books from your local library, or even take online art journaling classes. Some classes are even free! There are tons of resources for you to research.
**Donât wait until the âtime is rightâ or when the âinspiration hits you.â Dive right in and go for it!**

Ten Art Journal Ideas and Prompts.
These prompts are great for art journals and sketch books!
1) Fill a page with icons. Think logos, symbols, flourishes, doodles, and other small and simple designs.
2) Completely cover a page (all white space) with leaves, feathers, flowers, and other things you find outside. Bonus points if you find butterfly wings.
3) Cut a pattern out of one page and use it as a stencil for the next page. Brush acrylic colour over top.
4) On a nature walk, pick as many varieties of mushroom as you can find. Try to determine what species they are, press and lable them in your journal.
5) Use a cup to fill a page with circles. Then, use different kinds of paint, pastels, markers, and fabrics to fill each circle in. Do the same for the gaps between the circles. Bonus points if none of the circles touch another of the same medium.
6) Paint stores give away mis-tinted house paint for free, or for very very cheap. Acquire latex house paint and apply large dollups of it to the page. Let them drip, focus on texture. Use a fan or blow drier to dry in place.
7) Sew along the edges of the page, loop the thread around instead of stitching so that it shows when you close the book. I used gold thread from the dollar store, it is thin enough not to get in the way of future entries.
8) Make a collage with old photographs and postcards found at a local second hand store.
9) Draw the room you are in. To avoid changes in perspective, stare at one object and draw what is in your peripheral vision.
10) Make pencil rubbings of the titles of all of your favorite books. Usually these are embossed under the jacket if the book is a hardcover.
