Quite frankly someone like this who feels like theyre in real distress (regardless of the reality) is MORE likely to stick with it than the people who are in it "out of the kindness of their hearts" when the chips are down purely because they feel they have a real, tenable, risk of losing everything if they DONT stand against it.

I can't believe you guys. This is taught in every AMERICAN school. It's literally part of the AMERICAN syllabus.
