So, before anyone becomes too upset, please read this to the end. (Also, I apologize for the weird gif, it’s almost 01:45 am here and I’m tired) I do think it’s unnecessary and wrong for people to change Finland into a girl just to make Sweden straight. I really do. HOWEVER I also think it’s unnecessary to discourage people from making Sweden straight just to make him gay. I think the important part of a ship/paring are the characters, not what kind of classification their relationship gets because of their genders.

But Hima says Sweden is canonically gay! So he must be made gay all the time, everywhere!

The literal translation I found of this famous “confirmation” is: “Sweden is a real one. But, please feel relieved, he never ever reacts to anyone but Finland in that way.”

This, to me, leaves quite a lot of room for interpretation. The way I interpret this is that Sweden is gay because the only one he loves/is attracted to is Finland; he doesn’t love Finland because he’s gay, it’s the other way around. Another thing to note is that this is a really old statement that was later removed and even the translator from 2007 points out that Hima’s thought and ideas might very well have changed since then. Personally, I don’t think gender is an issue for Sweden at all. Based on his character, I’m pretty convinced he’d be just as in love with Finland no matter what. 

But say I was wrong on everything and Sweden is canonically super gay and would never be attracted to a woman, Finland or otherwise. Why is there a problem with a minority of the fandom letting their imagination change this in relatively few  fanworks? Anyone who doesn’t like it doesn’t have to pay any attention the them. The overwhelming majority will still portray Sweden as gay - focus on those instead.( and straight characters are made gay ALL THE TIME in ALL FANDOMS, why should the reverse not be okay?)

Long text short, I think people should do what they want when it comes to shipping, so long as we’re all respectful towards each other. We don’t have to like all possible ships and combinations, but we do need to let people have them.
