This woman is truly a damned goddess, those who say otherwise are either blind or have no eyes. BUT, we're talking about the Odyssey, it's Greek mythology. In recent years it was always a mess if an actor was chosen and didn't really belong to the same ethnic group as the character they were playing.
I'm not racist, I agree with inclusivity in films and TV series, and first Who is Racist isn'tna person but a beast, how can you hate someone only for the colour of their skin... However, isn't it unfair that an Odyssey film is assigned to exclusively American actors instead of European ones?
Let me explain better, I speak for historical accuracy, I do not want to belittle these actors or discriminate. Samantha Morton and Jon Bernthal are among my favorite actors.
But, again, we're talking about the Odyssey. How cool would it have been to hire Greek actors for Odysseus, Penelope, Menelaus, Helen, etc.?

For Calypso they could have chosen a Tunisian actress, for Circe an Italian actress. Scylla and Charybdis are monsters, so I'm not telling you to get actresses, just use CGI. IF YOU THEN WANT TO CREATE THE MYTH OF SCYLA, then yes, get the actress so we can see the whole story of Circe with Scylla and Glaucus.
It would have been more historically accurate, although I understand that historically mythology isn't real. But then if we agree that since mythology doesn't exist, let's make a movie about Norse mythology and cast Chinese and Thai actors.
I hope I'm explaining myself well, I'm not very good at expressing myself, and English isn't my native language. But do you understand what I'm trying to say?
It's not the choice of Lupita Nyong'o. The problem is the entire cast! Let's not even talk about the photography! Dull, dark, they even chased away the rainbows! Literally the goddess Iris treated like dirt in the face! And no, I'm not telling you who she is, go and find out!
I love Nolan, I understand it's his trademark... But we're talking about The Odyssey. And let's not start with that "The Man Who Defied the Gods".... I get hives just thinking about that sentence.
And I also fear how they made me Odysseus, because if I find myself yet another Odysseus who wants to return to his beloved but in the meantime goes CONSENSUALLY to Circe and Calypso... I START THE WAR.
For those who don't know, for those who haven't read the Odyssey, Odysseus is literally forced to sleep with Circe by Hermes. With Calypso, however, reading the pages you intuit that Calypso forced him, Odysseus is depressed, he cries continuously, he literally gets saved.
I'd now give you the bibliography, chapter and verse of all this. But I'm Italian, I'm reading it in Italian, the Feltrinelli edition, so I don't think everyone has this edition, but if you bought it and read it it would be a LOT better.
Another thing, seeing the comments under the post was shocking me. Some people say there are no black gods. As if Africa, as if every single country there, didn't have a history or a religion. How ignorant are people? And yes, I'm insulting here. You're an ignoramus if you dare say and think that. Why don't you educate yourself first instead of commenting? Why don't you study before spouting nonsense?
For example, there are Dinka Spirituality, Bantu Creation, San Folklore or Yoruba Religion and I also told you three random ones, but it is FULL of spirituality and religions!
