An atrial septal defect (ASD) is a congenital heart defect characterized by a permanent hole in the wall separating the heart's upper chambers, which causes oxygen-rich blood to leak back into the lungs and overload the right side of the heart. To correct this, a cardiac septal occlusion device is delivered through a minimally invasive catheter inserted into a groin vein and guided up to the heart. Once in position, the self-expanding, double-disk device deploys to tightly clamp the tissue on both sides of the hole, sealing the opening permanently and allowing natural heart tissue to grow over the implant over time.
