What does it mean to be true to oneself?
Decisions, conscience, and thinking for one's self. When you think for yourself, people often think you're being selfish, doncha think? Well now let's see if that's actually what's happening during those scenarios.
Decisions. Oh this one is good, reaaaaaallly good. On decision can mean your entire life, your future or the futre of the ones you care about (loved ones, friends etc.). If you make a decision that can change the future of even a stranger, then that's one thing to consider. You can make any decision you want in lif, whether it be for yourself or for others and how it can affect both you or them as a person. Not limited to humans, but to animals too. You may or may not think about your decisions later on which brings us to-
Conscience. Ever have second thoughts when making decisions? yes, everyone does, they often overthink it before or after the decisio is made. Saved a cat off of the side of the street? But you had to risk the ride you had to take to go to school. Feel regretful? Yes? No? or maybe both. You missed your ride to school yet saved the life of an innocent critter on the sidewalk, yet, you get punished when you get t school for being tardy. Which brings us to-
Regret/Contentment. Did your decision benefit you? Or other people? Or both? Or non? These questions often linger the minds of those who are eager to not let people down due to repeated disappoinments throughout their lives. Or else, it'll take a toll on their mental health and make them dysfuntional as a human being.
But what do these have to do with being true to yourself?
All of it. Well..... Saying true to yourself is rather a vague yet wide subject to discuss. But then again, it has to do with the three points I made. Your Decisions can trigger your conscience either before or after you make a decision and afterwards be regretful you made such decision or be content of how it turned out.
Coincidentally, being true to oneself is basically making decisions that YOU think will be beneficial to yourself or other people in more ways than the other. Making such decisions while doubting yourself is something to avoid. Another thing is your GUT feeling. You trust your own, you trust yourself, in your decision or in your intuition about a certain event or action.
EXAMPLE TIME
One of the few examples of this, is choosing your friend circle. Or just A friend rather.
Being true to yourself while trying your best to not be rude (or being as rude as possible since that's who you might be) to other people is just as showing your true self, especially when in certain situations, such as an open forum or in another person's house just talking about your own feelings, you may or may not accidentally or intentionally let out your true self when provoked with a certain topic you're very senstitive to.
Another example would be just as simple as choosing your college course (or any educational course choice you may come across in your school life). Simple? yes, it's as easy as writing or chatting or telling the interviewer or just putting it on the form that's given to you for your appication. But is it EASY? Of course not, you have to think of what kind of course you NEED or WANT. Whether you can afford it or not. Wheter you'll be able to do it with your ability. Whether you can get support physically, socially, mentally or financially. All those matter doesn't it? Yet, if you're being true to yourself, it's just as easy as answering what course you want regardless of whatever reason there may be.
So what's the point in being true to yourself?
There's only one, knowing what you want and what you can do. By making those choices yourself without the influence or guidance of other outer factors.
Knowing yourself can greatly help and boost even your own confidence, since it'll help you make sure you're able to do this or make that and such that you wont have a problem when you face such issues.
Then again, not everyone is able to do this, since most people lie to themselves everyday doubting their own abilities and needs. Its sad, yet frustrating at the same time, and you cant do much about it unless you can talk them out of it or into it.
Either waym staying true to yourself can have an equal amont of pros and cons. Its up to you whether or not to trust yourself with it or go with your own feeling.
