Porter had just put on a fresh pair of pajamas , making extra sure they were soft as soft could be after the accident and the laundromat last week that caused the washers and driers to be busted until they finally had gotten fixed yesterday. The coal truck hadn’t expected a guest , but he usually left his door unlocked for a wary traveler to rest their head. The freights never got into much trouble , so the gesture never served any harm to Porter.
The coal truck tousled with his red hair , stretching a bit before rolling over to his room , humming as he moved along. As he flopped down on his bed , he rolled over and stared up at the ceiling for a bit. Today had been a good day , he thought to himself as he mindlessly hummed a tune to himself. He had met up with Lumber and Slick and had a great talk on how to be a better freight with Rusty.
He could feel his eyes drooping now , sleep starting to wash over him. Porter took it as a sign and crawled deeper into bed, lifting up the old comforter and cuddling up inside of the bed, taking up most of the twin bed with just his arm span. Lumber had been telling him to getting a bigger bed for months now , but he liked his twin sized one. What’s the point of throwing away something that wasn’t broken ? His thoughts slowed as sleep slowly started to overtake him , closing his eyes with a soft , satisfied , hum.
Brexit was feeling…pretty uncomfortable to say the last.
He has been trying to head back home after a night out with Ruhrgold, where the most they did was talk and ultimately get him to finally come out of his bed after 17 hours of straight sleeping. Though, they’d never talked for this long before. And before the both of them knew it, it was already almost midnight and Brexit had ran out to try and go back to his shed.
Coming to realize though…he didn’t know where it was.
Sure, he’d living in the yard for a while, but he was still so new to it, and he’d get lost easily if he had no one to guide him. So, he chose the route that Ruhrgold had taken him to retrace his steps.
And then he gave up moments later.
He grumbled to himself as he made it to the freight part of the yard, grimacing at all the junk and….dirt before shaking his head and rubbing his forehead with a disgruntled sigh. He needed some place to rest for the night. The British engine rolled past the many sheds, cringing at the stare they were in before rolling over to the cleanest looking one and knocked on the door with loud but gentle type knocking.
Loud snoring racked the room Porter was in. So loud , even , that Brexit was able to faintly hear it from outside the shed.
Porter wasn’t waking up anytime soon , at least he thought so.
When Porter next awoke , he was flopped on the grey couch with some green engine looking over him. How did he get in here ?
“ Green Arrow .. ? “ The coal truck mumbled , half asleep. He tried to get himself up , but he was too tired to even open his eyes fully. The last thing he heard before he dozed back off was some sharp laughter .. Just great , Green Arrow was laughing at him now.
Brexit’s eye twitched, before he sniffed and kept knocking before pausing and letting his hand fall down. He sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. Everyone in this yard was asleep, surely he was pushing his luck—
The door opened, and a..rather large coal truck was in front of it. Brexit blinked, eyes big as he opened his mouth. "Could you let me in?" He mumbled, feeling particularly uneasy at the trucks closed eyes. The freight never spoke a word, and rolled back inside slowly leaving the door open.
Was this how freight usually acted?
If they did, then he was proud to say that those encounters with Flat-Top were the most normal ones. Brexit rolled inside cautiously, glancing around the very vibrant red living room before looking at the coal truck flop on the couch.
The British engine raised his brow, and went to sit next to the other, but not before closing the front door and locking it. "Sir?" He tilted his head, poking the others thigh, before squinting…was the other..? He poked a few more times before realizing…that coal truck was…sleepwalking wasn’t he..
The British Engine cackled, his face turning a bright red before he covered his mouth and curled into the couch to calm himself down. He had no idea why, but the whole experience of a freight sleepwalking him into the other shed had him cackling like mad. Though, the name the other said made him raise a brow.
"No?" He snorted, shaking his head to ground himself. Who even was that. Brexit glanced over at the sleeping engine, before sighing dramatically. Whatever, maybe he would ask later.
Porter tossed and turned in his sleep , seemingly having a rough night. He didn’t wake up until a few hours later. To his surprise , the green engine was still there , though now slumped over on a nearby couch chair.
Porter yawned , hastily getting up and stretching. He rubbed his eyes and blinked a few times. As they were adjusting , he saw in the still dim light that the engine was in fact not Green Arrow but some weird looking old train with a funny looking hat .. did anyone even wear those anymore ? Porter was none the wiser.
He got off the couch , groaning a bit at his stiff limbs but making his way to chair in which Brexit sat , shaking him awake lazily. He crossed his arms after a sign of life came from the other , a curious expression on his face as he cocked his head.
Brexit was sleeping soundly, but not after letting out a few loud snores. The couch he had been struggling to sit in had become actually kind of comfortable, and so he had trailed off to sleep like a trainlet would. Mostly, and definitely, the best sleep in his life.
When the morning rolled around…or whenever the freight usually woke up, he was still sleeping, curled up on the couch chair and shivering from the cold of the room. But that stopped once he felt a pair of arms shaking his shoulders. He grunted, gagging softly before groaning and waking up.
"Hello." He murmured, tilting his head in confusion before realizing that yes, what happened hours ago definitely did happen, and now he was probably screwed for sleeping in someone’s home without permission. His eyes widened, and he felt his chest tighten as the curiosity from the coal truck began to look more and more like hate and suspension…to him.
Porter blinked once , looking Brexit up and down. He didn’t look like any other train he’d seen before. He was definitely old .. was that the union jack on his chest ? This engine must’ve been made in the United Kingdom , like him !
“ Who are you ? “ He said , curiously .. and a bit too loud from excitement , his accent seeping through the syllables.
Porter didn’t ask how the engine got in , as he honestly didn’t care. His shed was open for visitors , so he didn’t mind the new face — he didn’t look like he could cause much harm anyway.
He chewed on the end of his lip mindlessly as he waited for a response , rocking his wheel back and forth on the wood. He locked eyes with Brexit for a brief moment , but quickly looked away , keeping his gaze to the small fibers on the couch cushion.
