On the road… Union been in strike, he’s down on his luck… ( BonJovi). So no air traffic to Eilat for half a day. So I chose to take the bus out of quarantine, from Jerusalem to Eilat. Was a blast. Line 444 via the dead seas. Roomy seats, lots of reading material and beautiful view. Dead Sea, the desert, Masada… thankful. Not every day coach or player who you were working with, gets this kind of promotion. So happy for Valeri Gandlin. This past week, Valerie was introduced as an Assistant Coach with Hapoel Eilat B.C and was inked for 3 years. It happened before. I had the privilege to coach or work with Mike Wilson (who joined our St. Francis Stuff right after graduating and 4 years ago was pointed Head Coach of Naugatuck High School Boys Basketball team, in CT). Also was bless to coach Gilbert Brown in his last season as a player, and 2 years later - he is an Assistant Coach in PITT!!! There were others, here in the overseas basketball arena, such as Dror Cohen (Played for us in Givat Shmuel) and just completed 4 years with Maccabi Rishon Letzion. But Valerie have done something special and immediately after retirement he got a multi-season deal with a Winner League team who will also play in Europe this year. Valerie had an interesting journey as a player. He grew up in Belarus. Played there in the Premier league, as well as for the U18 and Senior national teams in few campaigns. In the early 2010’s he made the move and came to play in Israel where he played also for Hapoel Eilat for 2 seasons, and spent most of his time in the second league (Leumit) where he complete multiple season with 44% or better for 3. In the last 4 years he have played for Hevel Eilot where he left his incredible mark with unbelievable shooting ability, team play and mature leadership. This past year he coached our U-18 team as well as U14, brought both teams to compete for championship (one won, the other dropped to 3rd place) but above all and most important thing - he work on players’ development on a daily bases in a very concise and thorough manner. Which I know the players appreciate and cherish. Valerie, Captain oh, Captain. We were blessed to have you. Proud of your big step up and happy we could be part of your journey. Way to go Val. When John told me few days ago he will not be around for our Knoxville workout, I was disappointed. When he told me he is in Vegas, I was happy for him.
