Even through my Sunday/Monday news and social media fast, the devastating news broke to me yesterday that Notre Dame has burned down. 😞 42 Hours. All we had was 42 Hours in Paris Dec 30-31, 2013. It was the end of our whirlwind first trip to Europe. We were cold, broke, tired, and arguing. I honestly wished we were still in Amsterdam, but THIS had been the impossible DREAM come true in my heart—Paris, finally. To share air with La Tour Eiffel, Le Louvre, and Notre Dame. I hastily snapped this shot from outside of it on New Years Eve 2013, quite desperate to take in as much as I could of the city before it was time to head back to the US. Had I seen everything? Not even close. But I captured enough to prove I was there. I’ll be back. I’ll come with more time, more money, a better plan...I will see you again. I find it funny that *I* rarely hear a person of color asking “Do we have to make everything about race?” People of color know the answer to the question. It’s no. No, we don’t *have* to make everything about race because THAT’S THE WAY THINGS JUST ARE FOR US 28 HOURS A DAY 8 DAYS A WEEK. If you cannot understand the visible and invisible, micro and macroaggressions that bombard non-white people from every direction in every breath, if you haven’t been born and raised to protect and defend yourself from it like you are fighting for your life BECAUSE YOU ARE, then yeah you might scratch your head a little at the tears people of color either swallow or shed because we’ve just had it with the bullshit. Your confusion is a privilege. So stop telling us we’re wrong because you feel uncomfortable observing this struggle. We never get to be comfortable. EVER. This has been a difficult week at Monarch as we collectively grieve the sudden passing of a beloved high school student. Today as I watched the assemblies unfold and smiles return to the faces of students and staff, I was reminded of why life is precious.
