This is the website I found on ways to be more creative that were different from the book, mostly. The book basically touched on ways to do it like brainstorming, logical mapping, free writing, and the...
Evan, It looks like you found one of the same sites that I came across. I too found this site to be very good. I feel that the author presented different styles of ideas. This is important because as you pointed out in your blog, " each person is an individual, and what works for me may not work for everyone".
While I personally chose other ways to increase creativity, I do like two that you wrote about. I have used role playing in the past and it has worked well. I definitely agree that having the right environment is a must.
Overall, I believe that there are many useful web sites to help people become more creative. In comparing the book to the web sites, I would say that the web offers better options. Good job, Evan. Bill
Creating Creativity
Our book mentions four guidelines to keep in mind as you strive to be more creative: Work at it, Pay attention to change, Be passionate about your task, & Hear naysayers, but don't always listen to them. The author then goes on to list and describe five invention techniques that should help increase creativity. The five techniques are logical mapping, brainstorming, freewriting, outlining/boxing, and using the journalist's questions.
While each of these five techniques for increasing creativity are considered different, they are in fact quite similar. They each consist of sitting down and writing out ideas, just in different formats. I agree that writing down ideas is a good way to attack a problem but I would have liked to see the author come up with more varying types of creative inspiration.
I typed in, "How to be creative", in my search bar and immediately got multiple lists of different ways to increase creativity. After reading through six different lists, I chose five ideas that I believe can help people become more creative. Those five ideas are: Sign up for a class, Get up and move, Read more, Nurture creative dissent, and Take inspired risks.
To me, these are five unique ways to get inspired. They are not one way repackaged five times. I like each of them for the different way that they go about giving me an individual frame of reference.
For the most part, I would say that the web sites are offering good advice. As with anything in life, sometimes you need to filter some of the information. Sometimes becoming more creative is just knowing what works best for you and also being open to trying different approaches.
We are Rod’s Bods, and we are a BBB accredited small company that provides body doubles to college students across the Midwest.
Have you ever had a day where you felt you just couldn’t make it to class? What if for a small fee you could get someone to sit in class and take lecture notes for you?
...
Jason, I love the concept. You did a great job of establishing the need and benefit of your product. We have all had days when making it to class was difficult or even impossible.
I thought that you did a nice job of stating your price and your reason for the price. Including the gpa lets the listener know that you are sending in someone who can likely handle the task of taking effective notes.
Your self evaluation is good. You clearly explain your logic. Well done.

Who here ever wanted to sleep better, feel healthier, and live life a lot more relaxed? Every year tons of dollars are thrown down the drain on a chiropractor. I propose that each person just get a Hot Spring spa. They are affordable, extremely energy efficient, and available typically within 50...
Evan, Where do I sign up? You did a great job with this. I sure want to sleep better, feel healthier, live more relaxed, and save money. I think that you bring out some great attention getter points.
Your enticement of saving money appeals to everyone, both men and women. Having the spa available 24/7 versus going to a doctor is also a great motivator.
Your self-evaluation/supporting comments, clearly show what your thought process was behind the pitch. I like how you point out that you use this in your store for this very purpose and then wait for the customer to ask follow up questions. Well done.

Graphene Integrated Glass
Elevator Pitch:
Graphene. It’s the new wonder material. It’s 300 times stronger than steel, nearly transparent, and is one of the best conductors of heat and electricity known to man. So what exactly is Graphene? It’s a single layer thick sheet of carbon atoms arranged...
Dustin, Overall I like it. I do think that it is a little too long. It is 311 words which is slightly over twice the recommended amount for an elevator pitch. I used a stopwatch and read through it twice. The second time it took me 120 seconds. I will concede that someone who is more familiar with the product and has their sales pitch ready would probably do it quicker. I like the points that you have made about the product, especially the climate comment, the fossil fuel comment, and the cost savings. To shorten it up you might be able to take out a few lines.
I had never heard of Graphene. I Googled it after reading this and it is pretty cool. Again, I like the pitch and the points that you made. Thanks for sharing.

The Pitch
Hello Coach. My name is Bill Kerr and I am the CEO of Advanced Coaching Experts. We at Advanced Coaching Experts work with both coaches and players to give them the best opportunity to succeed. I was at your game two days ago and could not help but notice that things did not go so well for your team. I believe that I can help your team be more successful. Not only can we help them be more successful on the field, but we can help them do better in the classroom as well. We have a proven track record of helping many teams become the best in their sport. I would love the opportunity to sit down with you and continue this conversation to show you exactly how, together, we can get the most out of your team. Let me know how far you want to go and we will help get you there.
Introduction & Credibility
I believe that my pitch starts off well because I immediately tell the listener who I am. I proceed to tell him the company that I am with and what our company does.
Story
I then tell the listener about being at their game and witnessing how it did not go so well. To me this lets the listener know that:
One – I have an interest in him and his team.
Two – I have knowledge of his situation.
Three – That I have the ability to be of help.
Idea / Reasons
Next, I tell the listener what it is that I can do for them and the team. I do this by telling the listener that I can help them be more successful. After all, who doesn’t want to be more successful?
Why me / Benefit
I let them know that we have a proven track record of helping teams become the best in their sport. This lets the listener know that we are successful at what we do which is all the more reason for them to give us the opportunity. I let them know that by working with my company, we can get more out of their team.

The following letter is from a man who feels he is being wronged by a company. The man wants to ensure he gets the rebate he was promised. The rebate is already quite late.
The man is using this letter to convey information to...
Jason,
Overall I feel that your evaluation of the letter is fairly accurate. However, I do have a few things that I disagree with. The first one is simply that it was written by a woman, not a man. The letter is signed by Maria Alguien and, at least to my knowledge, Maria is a woman's name. The second point is that I do not feel that she is "hostile" or that she needs to "tone down the fierce attitude". This is just a personal preference. You feel that she is "hostile" and needs to tone it down and I feel that she is ok.
Lastly, you say that she does not have a header when in fact she does. The header consists of her address and the company name and address that she is sending it to.
On the positive side, I think that you summed it up best with your statement, "Overall, I would say that this letter was very effective." I agree. I feel that her letter is very effective. I look forward to reading more of your post this semester.

The House Always Wins
Elon Musk, CEO November 21, 2014
There have been several articles recently implying that Tesla, through clever machinations, maneuvered Nevada into providing an overly large incentive package for the Gigafactory. I love backhanded compliments as much as the next person,...
Dustin,
I feel that you have analyzed the blog by Elon Musk very well. I agree with your statement, " It is clear, concise, easy to follow, and shows his intelligence. " Mr. Musk does a nice job of stating his points and using examples to back up his points.
Your blog clearly expresses the style, the design, and the content used by Mr. Musk. Like Mr. Musk's blog, you did a nice job of stating your points and using examples to back up your points.
I look forward to reading your posts throughout the semester.
Bill
This letter is one that I found very interesting, for numerous reasons. This letter is written from one of the editors at The New Yorker to American poet, novelist, and short story writer Sylvia Plath. In the letter, the editor is critiquing one of Miss Plath’s poems. They explain they cannot...
Evan,
I found your critique of the letter to be very good. You did a nice job of summarizing the content and some of the noticeable features of the letter. You expanded on those thoughts as shown by your comments with regard to the style, the form, and the effectiveness of the letter.
I also enjoyed your personal comments with regard to the qualifications of both the letter writer and the poet. You did a nice job of commenting on the time period in which it was written, and the manner in which it was written, or in this case, typed.
Well done,
Bill

For this assignment, I chose to use a memo written from Jim Morris to employees of ILM, Skywalker Sound, and LDL. Jim Morris was the president of Lucas Digital during the filming of The Phantom Menace. I will discuss the content, organization, style, and design used, to explain why I believe that this is an effective memo.
Mr. Morris opens the memo with a little background information which lets the reader understand why they are receiving the memo and the enclosed bonus. I feel that this is important because it tells the reader right away why they are receiving the memo. If the recipient just received a check with no information then the recipient would be left wondering why they were receiving a check that they were not expecting.
Mr. Morris then tells the reader that the bonus is enclosed. This is also helpful because the employee is not left to wonder when they should be receiving the bonus. If there happened to be a mistake and the bonus was not in there, the recipient would know right away that the bonus was missing.
The next paragraph explains how the dollar amounts were calculated and the requirement needed to receive the bonus. Again, this is good, open communication, which helps the reader understand the process.
Lastly, Mr. Morris makes the memo personal by expressing his appreciation and commending everyone for doing a great job.
I believe that the organization of the memo is effective because it explains who, what, when, how, and why the bonuses were distributed.
The style and design make the memo easy to read. It is block style and it is easy to scan and pick up information quickly.
There are two changes that I would make to this memo. The first change would be to add some sort of letterhead to the top which would make it look more official. The second change that I would make is to take the sentence, " So, enclosed you will... bonus!", and move it down below the next paragraph. To me, it seems to be a better location for that sentence.
Overall, I believe that this is an effective, well written memo. Below is a link to the memo that I found.
