The apocalypse was quiet. It had a way about it, a certain charm. It could be called graceful. It was taking a long time. People prepared for an apocalypse that they could take up arms against, bunker down with. People hoarded filtered water, canned corn, dry milk, batteries. They published books on how to get things done in the new post-world, a world that they always imagined as being much like our own, only missing one or two key things. They might imagine, for example, that survivors would reemerge onto a planet stripped of all vegetable and plant life. First, the animals would grow vicious and then starve. It would be important to hoard as many of these animals as possible, pack them in salt and hide them away to keep. You’d want to have a supply of emergency seed to grow in a secure location, maybe using sterilized soil that you had already hoarded. Then you’d want to gather a crew. One muscle man with a heart of gold, a scientist type, an engineer, a child, and somebody that you thought maybe you could love, if you survived long enough to love them.

I’ve taken to calling this kind of rhetoric “stop-hitting-yourself feminism.” It presumes that all the oppression women face is perpetuated solely by ourselves, and that if every woman (individually, not collectively) just decided to be confident and powerful, patriarchy and its effects would vanish overnight. In this worldview, the only reason any woman experiences sexism is that she simply hasn’t made the choice to shake it off. I am absolutely in favor of women apologizing less, standing up for themselves more, and feeling like badasses in the process. But I would be foolish not to acknowledge that every time a marginalized person stands up for herself, the world paints a target on her back. And I’d be cruel to blame any woman who tries to avoid that kind of abuse for collaborating in her own oppression. Instead of chastising women for their developed survival skills, instead of insisting on individual solutions to societal problems, and especially instead of equating empowerment with a brand of shampoo, I want to see us working together to call out double standards and create a more supportive and thoroughly unapologetic world for everyone. Instead of “stop hitting yourself,” I want us to collectively start hitting back.
Lindsay King-Miller on Pantene’s “empowering” commercial and why we’re wrong to tell women to stop apologizing. (x)

This is the highlight of my year.
Dark green georgette fabric with the white and yellow design throughout the sari. It’s absolutely beautiful, and perfect for a night out or any event. Maybe even try it with a corset! A dull yellow, or silver corset, or black, or a corset like mine! There is no blouse.

September 1, 1902: Georges Méliès Le Voyage dans la Lune (A Trip to the Moon), one of the first science-fiction films, is released in France.
Some prints of A Trip to the Moon were individually hand-colored by Elisabeth Thuillier’s coloring lab in Paris.[42] Thuillier, a former colorist of glass and celluloid products, directed a studio of two hundred people painting directly on film stock with brushes, in the colors she chose and specified; each worker was assigned a different color in assembly line style, with more than twenty separate colors often used for a single film. On average, Thuillier’s lab produced about sixty hand-colored copies of a film.

This is Martha, the last Passenger Pigeon. She died on September 1, 1914 in the Cincinnati Zoo. Shortly thereafter, her body was packed in ice and sent by railroad to Washington, DC, to become a part of the National Museum of Natural History’s collection as a lasting legacy of the harm that can be done to the natural world by humans. Just decades prior, the Passenger Pigeon was the most abundant bird in North America. The disappearance of the species helped ignite the modern conservation movement.
For the Centennial of her death, Martha was recently brought out for display and is currently on view in the exhibition Once There Were Billions, Vanished Birds of North America. Sponsored by the Smithsonian Libraries in partnership with the National Museum of Natural History and the Biodiversity Heritage Library, the exhibition tells the story of the last Passenger Pigeon, a member of a species that once numbered in the billions, along with the disappearance of the Great Auk, Carolina Parakeet, and Heath Hen. These extinctions reveal the fragile connections between species and their environment.
The Smithsonian Libraries, National Museum of Natural History, and the Biodiversity Heritage Library will be hosting a Twitter Chat on September 2, 2014 from 2-3 pm Eastern Time. This is your chance to ask questions about the Passenger Pigeon, extinction, and biodiversity literature.
Follow @SILibraries, @NMNH, and @BioDivLibrary and use the hashtag #Martha100 to tweet your questions.
