"Everything here is good, but I have to recommend the dark chocolate. Especially the cherry cordials. But Iām fairly partial to fruit with chocolate." Natasha gave the woman a polite smile, still a little unsettled at how familiar she seemed. She swore she had seen her before. "If you donāt like fruit, though, we have some lovely dark chocolate truffles. Theyāre divine.ā
The smile was false and Deanna felt a sense of dread creeping over her. She glanced around the room, looking for electronic surveillance before fixing her gaze back on the woman. If this was an ambush, she had already walked straight into it. At this point, she had nothing left to lose. āWho are you?ā Deanna asked warily, eyes darting to the door once again. āThe KGB sent you, didnāt they?ā

"I have had a great deal of practice," Martok replied with a nod. "But from what I could see, you held your own rather wellā¦ for a Starfleet Counsellor," he added with a slight grin.
Briefly he examined his wounds, then shrugged it off. They werenāt that bad. Holstering his mekāleth, he allowed Troi to keep the dāk tahg for now. She might need it again.
When Troi said that there were more jemāHadar ahead, the General lifted his chin and sniffed the air. It was hard to smell anything through all the blood and death, but he thought he could just about make out their scent. āHow many do you detect?ā he asked.
"Thank you," Deanna said, genuinely flattered.
She closed her eyes and focused on the minds before them, trying to pick out each individual brain. "It's difficult to tell because they tend to think alike," she answered, "but I sense at least six, maybe eight." She opened her eyes and glanced at him, hoping he had a better plan. Even with the element of surprise, fighting three Jem'Hadar had been difficult enough. Fighting six would be a suicide mission.
The last thing Natasha had expected was to end up working at a chocolate shop, but it paid the bills. That, and it was nice to take home a free treat every once in a while. It was a good job for now, and was helping her establish her alias.Ā
When the woman entered the shop, Natasha gave her a polite smile, not really looking at her face. The womanās happy sigh drew her attention, though, and when she looked more closely, something about her face seemed familiar. She couldnāt place what it was, but it unsettled her.
"Can I help you? Or are you just browsing?"
Deanna redirected her pleasant look at the employee who spoke to her. There was something familiar about the woman that made Deanna hesitate for a moment before she answered. "What do you recommend?" she asked, hoping that she just recognized a face she had passed on the street before. She moved closer to the counter casually, fixing her gaze on the chocolates displayed in the case. She let her empathic senses stretch towards the familiar woman, letting herself brush gently against the other woman's emotions. Though she hated using her empathic senses on strangers, her sense of self-preservation was far too strong to allow herself to walk willingly into a trap.

"Yes, well, if youāre not one for considerably long speeches, you may want to rethink thatā¦ But he is quite remarkable, and I will pass your comment along to him. I know it will mean a great deal.ā Kathryn said with a grin. The EMH, once he saw the feeds of this conference, would no doubt be bemoaning the inferiority of the medical speakers anyway. To know that Commander Troi mentioned him would make him all the more determined to be on the next yearās schedule. He had met her briefly while he was still aboard Voyager (perhaps more since then, she was uncertain),Ā and the Captain got the feeling that Troiās good opinion had become important to him. Not to mention the Doctor was still dealing with someā¦resistance in acclimating to life back in the Federation, due to being a hologram. She wanted to encourage him wherever she could.
"Which shipmate?" she asked with a chuckle. The thought of Picard drifting off during the middle of a seminar was particularly amusing to her, though she was almost entirely certain he wouldnāt be the shipmate in question. She tried to think of who it would beā¦
Kathryn nodded. āIām staying planetside as well. Youāre right, itās too much trouble to go back and forth. Plus, Iāve spent enough time on ships that any time on a planet is generally welcomeā¦ Is Captain Riker here with you?ā
"Length is relative--I would much rather a speech that's long and well-written than something discussing irrelevant minutiae," Deanna countered goodnaturedly.Ā
"Geordi--La Forge. Enterprise's chief engineer so former shipmate but close friend. I dragged him along with me because everyone else was busy. At least it was a little relevant to his interests even if he cares less about aesthetics and more about what's inside a PADD." She shook her head fondly. "He'll probably make me attend a long-winded engineering seminar as revenge."
Deanna smiled at the mention of her husband. "Captain Riker is still aboard the Titan. He's in orbit but he doesn't like to leave the ship without her captain for too long."
Ever since Deanna had managed to escape the Black Widow program, she had worked hard to turn her life around. Most of her life had been spent being trained for espionage, specifically emotional manipulation. She had been part of an experimental group designed to sense, and take advantage of, people's emotions. Though the other girls in the trial had either been failed experiments or died, Deanna had been a success.Ā
She had been trained and tested through adolescence before they unleashed her on the world. She had spent nearly five years working obediently as a Black Widow before she found an opportunity to escape. After spending a year running from the KGB, she had been able to create a new identity for herself as a psychiatrist. She used the empathic powers that had been forced upon her to help people, a penance for those she had hurt in her past.
Deanna had just finished a session with a patient and was on her way home when a store caught her eye. The chocolates in the window drew her to it and she hastily crossed the street, hoping to buy herself a treat before heading home. She pushed the door open and entered, inhaling the delectable scent of fresh chocolate with a happy sigh. Nothing was quite as enjoyable as a good piece of chocolate.Ā

Elena smiled at the compliment , a little pleased that the Counselor thought that was the case. āI hope they have, though part of me does . . ā She stopped and shook her head lightly. āWell, I find no joy in these negotiations, these people seem to think theyāre better than each other. Some, anyway.ā
Deanna smiled. "It seems to me that that's the case with every conference--egos tend to run large among diplomats. And bruised egos create an even more inflated sense of self importance, I've found."

Kaja pulled a face: "Asparagus ... yuck!", she shook her head: "It never would be like real chocolate.", she nodded: "Well, carrots are okay.", she smiled: "But I prefer fruits.", she came to an halt in front of the door to Ten Forward: "I hope it's not too busy inside.", she mumbled and held the Counselors hand tighter as they entered.
"Carrots are definitely much better than asparagus," Deanna agreed as she led the way inside. Ten Forward was dotted with various ship personnel and the atmosphere was calm and quiet. At this time of day, Ten Forward tended to be occupied by a much quieter crowd than would be seen in a few hours' time. Deanna nodded at Guinan, who stood at the bar chatting with a Bolian, as she led the way to a secluded table.

"Yes, that was more than a little dry, I must admit. And it was a shame he didnāt give the medical advancement aspect more timeā¦ I kept thinking that if my Doctor were here, he would have been appalled. Not only for glossing over the medical technology, but for the complete lack ofā¦flair." She smiled and took a sip of her drink before realizing that might have sounded odd. "My CMO I had aboard Voyager I mean, not my personal physician. Anyway, letās just say Iām glad I had consumed an inadvisable amount of coffee before that one.ā Otherwise she would not have managed it. āAre you staying planetside while attending the conference, or on your ship?ā
"Though the discussion of PADD size has its time and place, I think I would have preferred listening to almost anything else. It's a shame your doctor didn't have a chance to speak--the medical advancement was the reason why I had attended the seminar to the first place."
At Janeway's comment on coffee, Deanna laughed. "I'm not sure there's enough coffee in the quadrant to keep the entire seminar awake--I kept having to wake up my shipmate. Snoring in the middle of the man's soliloquy would have been terribly rude."
"I'm staying planetside," she answered. "Though it's nice to sleep in my own bed, dragging myself back and forth can get tiring, especially when these parties last half the night and the conference starts again only a few hours later. That extra half hour of sleep can make an immense difference in my opinion."

Elena kept her smile going at the hidden chuckle. At the comment of the serenity on board, Elena glanced around, almost a little curiously. āIāve been commanding the Justicia for about three and a half years now.ā She answered, quickly counting over to make sure she had it right. āAnd itās just something the crew are good at I think, youāre the first to comment on it though. During times of Red Alert, itās an ordered chaos, otherwise, everything is quite calm. A change from my last ship, thatās for sure.ā
"Having a crew like yours is a sign of a good captain," Deanna said confidently. "If people trust their captain, the ship's entire atmosphere is different--far more relaxed. Starfleet picked a fine location for this conference."Ā

The little girl smiled brightly, she glanced over to the Counselor and her eyes reflected her excitement. Sure, sheād been sad a few minutes before, but somehow that feeling was gone - for now. She knew it would come back as soon as she was alone again.
"I love them too.", she declared, looking at her seriously but with a little smile as she continued. She placed her forefinger on her lips and quietly promised: "I wonāt.", adding a wink. She glanced up and down at the Counselor briefly before declaring: "But I donāt know why Dr. Crusher wonāt like it, you are slim, despite the sundaes.", she supported her compliment with a wide smile.
"It's because I eat my veggies," Deanna replied as they neared Ten Forward. "Though I suspect that there are some brave scientists out there trying to find a way to make asparagus taste like chocolate. But until then, I think I'll stick with carrots."
