I was struck by the similarities in rhetoric between cultural feminists and the testimony of General Robert Barrow delivered in a 1991 hearing on women in military combat. “Now I may be old fashioned” he says “but I think the very nature of women disqualifies them from doing it. Women give life, sustain life, nurture life, they don’t take it.” Obviously General Barrow doesn’t have a feminist bone in his body, but he was making the case that war and killing are male imperatives, and that without the civilising influence of women’s good nature, the world will go down a very dark path. This is a really controversial idea in feminism today, dismissed as essentialist and harmful to women. We seem to currently be in a phase of feminism that seeks to emulate traditions conceived in male culture: consumerism, individualism, pornography and the exploitation of others. But in the 1980s some prominent feminists were making the case for the promotion of a kind of ‘female culture’ that advances supposedly womanly virtues, like those identified by General Barrow. Life-affirming, nurturing, communal. The big difference between the two being that General Barrow sees the male obsession with war as an unchangeable and necessary fact of life, whereas cultural feminists sought to influence men by promoting and preserving a female counterculture that might eventually convince more people of the pointless absurdity of war.
