Law had known this was a pointless endeavor from the start.
It had taken the strange duo nearly two weeks to reach their destination - some small, well-off island Corazon had selected as their first stop on the journey to finding a cure for Law's Amber Lead Disease. A cure the child had spent each waking moment adamantly insisting they would not find.
With enough time, the part of Law that once dreamed of growing up and becoming a renowned doctor like his father believed a cure might have been found. But that part of him no longer existed. It had been left to rot and be forgotten with his family, his home, and all the dreams of a future that had never -would never- belong to him.
He hadn't been surprised when the man chose to ignore him. Law was sure he probably thought he was a whiny, petulant brat with no idea how the world around them really worked. He didn't care. Corazon had yet to give him a reason why he was bothering to drag him around like this in the first place, but given his insistence on pressing onward with his plan and lack of regard for Law's feelings on the matter, he suspected the man had ulterior motives of some sort. He just hadn't worked out what they were yet.
The hospital visit had unfolded almost exactly as he'd expected as well - with one exception. He'd known the staff would turn him away before they'd stepped foot inside the hospital's halls and he'd felt the hatred and cruel words of its workers coming as they screeched over Corazon's outraged protests.
What he hadn't expected was how badly the words still managed to hurt him. He'd thought he was beyond feeling anything but the ever-present rage by now, thought with the death of everyone he'd ever loved already behind him nothing could hurt again. He'd been mortified and furious to feel the tears that welled up in his eyes in the split second before he'd sprinted from the room. Why did it hurt so much when he'd known it was coming all along? Why did their words or anything else matter when he wanted to badly to just be done?
And why of all things did he feel such a sharp sting of betrayal from the man who crouched before him now?
I told you, Law thought. I told you, and you didn't listen. And now he hurt when he didn't want to feel anything besides the anger that had brought him this far, and here was Corazon shrugging sounding remorseful one moment and yet turning around and suggesting they'd do it all over again tomorrow.
Well, not if Law had anything to say about it. He didn't know what Corazon intended to do with him in the improbably event of his survival, but it wasn't his problem. There was no way he was going to let this man put him through the pain and humiliation he'd been dealt today all over again.
Law didn't know where he was going to go when he slipped out of whatever room Corazon procured for them tonight, but it didn't matter. He only had to get away. And to do that, he'd have to play along until the man drifted off to sleep tonight.
"Whose fault is that?" Law bristled at the subtle barb. He wouldn't smell bad if Corazon had just left him alone! "I didn't ask you to bring me here," he reminded the tall man through gritted teeth, but he willed the hurt and scheming from his features as he fell into step behind him.
The final barb he threw in was simply for the sake of acting normal, Law told himself. It had absolutely nothing to do with him being a petty brat.
"You smell way worse than I do."
“Do you think you’ll ever forgive me?” (Law)
Random Lines From My Notebook, Pt. 7 // accepting
He's halfway to the door when Cora-san's voice rings out behind him, the words leaving him rooted to the spot in his reluctant retreat to bed for the evening. No matter how abysmal his sleeping patterns had become or how many years had passed since they'd last seen each other, that was one thing that still hadn't seemed to change: Law never could best his savior in a game of "who can stay awake the latest."
For a moment, Law thinks he must have heard him wrong. There's no way the man should have any reason to ask him what he thinks he's just heard, and yet... Rosinante hadn't stuttered. His words were straightforward and unwavering as they'd always been when he'd talked to his young companion.
It's only the slightest hint of uncertainty he picks up in the man's soft tone that makes Law realize, yes, he'd really just asked him what he thought he'd heard.
A frown mars the pirate's features as he turns back to face the man who saved his life. The stranger whose unexpected compassion had healed a boy who thought himself too broken to be fixed again - the father-figure who'd endeavored to pick what was left of him up off of the ground when he'd lost his first family and the only life he'd ever known. The friend who had given him both the means and the will to keep on living when all he wanted to do was curl up and slip away.
"There's not a single damn thing I can think I'd ever need to forgive you for, Cora-san," Law answers earnestly, grateful for the shadows his hat casts over his face as he takes a mental tally of everything Rosinante is directly responsible for giving him. His fingers curl into a fist at his side, digits flexing to distract himself from the sudden tightness he feels in his throat. "You gave me my life back when I didn't think there was anything left to live for. You saved me," he points out, feeling uncomfortably vulnerable giving voice to a thought that's driven him for thirteen long years. Twice as many as he'd ever expected to see.
And here's the man he owes it all to, asking Law if he can forgive him.
"I didn't think I'd ever get the chance to say thank you for that."

he had insisted on helping out somehow, and well, rosi was a decent enough cook — or at least he knew how to make a few dishes really well. but his skills in the kitchen did not make his natural clumsiness suddenly disappear. it took only a few moments into cutting up potatoes before the large, slouched man was uttering 'oh' upon realizing he'd cut into the base of his thumb, as blood was starting to pool.
however, instead of dropping what he was doing, rosinante casually stuck that part of his hand against his mouth, hoping that this would stop the bleeding. in the meantime, his free hand continued to toss potato chunks into a nearby pot. when his method failed to work though, the man's brow furrowed and a slight frown formed, hidden by upturned painted lips. it couldn't be that deep could it? it didn't hurt.
a low, thoughtful hum rises in the former marine's throat, before a spark of genius has him grabbing one of the dirty dish towels by the kitchen sink. he presses the rag against the wound to staunch the bleeding, then to the best of his ability with one hand and his teeth, he knots the cloth into place.
❝ perfect, that should do for now! ❞ now, back to that cooking...

@misfitsandmusings-x said: [HC ask!] Before everything went bad, did kid!Rosinante have any particular dreams/hopes/goals/etc for the future? Does he have ideas about what his life might have looked like if Homing hadn't withdrawn from the World Nobles? // unprompted (always accepting)
trigger warnings: brief mentions of child torture and slavery; description of ptsd symptoms
the lighter illuminates dimly lit office as the navy officer leans back with a heavy sigh, denoting the end of a long day of his least favorite task: paperwork. he inhales the nicotine from his glowing crutch, as eyes close and head tilts back over the top of his desk chair. with sound barrier up, the only noise heard is that of his own soft breathing and the steady thump of his heart. and so his mind wanders, to things he didn't get done in the day, to dreaded dinner plans with sengoku and garp, then to other things — thoughts and memories that still frequently pop up.
❛ when I grow up, I want to be just like father! ❜
rosinante was pretty young, only six-years-old when his father decided to leave the heavenly life behind. so there isn't too much that is remembered from the portion of his childhood spent there, except that it was a happier, blissful time from a child's perspective. he hadn't really reached a point in his cognitive development where concrete goals for the future were forming in a young boy's mind.
but from the snippets of his early life that the navy man finds flickering behind closed eyes, he sees himself sitting in the family's garden in mary geoise, with his mother, drawing. and he thinks, maybe a younger, innocent, and untouched-by-the-world version of himself would have liked to be an artist. only recently, after he felt a new sense of peace with doffy finally locked up, had he suddenly felt the push to pick up paper and pencil again.
then rosinante begins to recall some things about being a world noble's son, though it is possible these memories are also diluted with intel about the world nobles given by sengoku or others with direct knowledge of the celestial dragons. he can't decide for sure, it's all a little fuzzy. but he knows, to some degree, that there were certain expectations in place for him from the beginning.
it's hard to recall every boring lesson in etiquette and topics deemed angelic, but the fallen dragon does clearly see one hysterical scene playing out in his head, in which a little boy tries to reach up on the table in an attempt to help arrange cutlery during a lesson, only to accidentally pull the entire table cloth from the long dining table, along with everything placed on top of it. he chuckles to himself, lips breaking into a small, melancholic smile.
yet, despite the rudimentary but necessary tutelage, his father was always one to encourage his children to find something they enjoyed doing to pursue as a passion. but now—rosinante sighs, a plume of smoke crawling past parted lips. maybe that encouragement was with the knowledge that he intended to withdraw from the world nobles from the start.
but what hopes and aspirations would a young child even start to consider to pursue? rosinante wanted what any boy his age might have hoped for, dreamt of, and taken for granted on the daily—the embrace of his mother and father, the companionship of his older brother, a yummy meal, a cozy bed, friends who made him smile, a safe place to live. all of which were quickly stripped away.
were those two years that still frequently haunted his sleep a form of divine punishment?
the blonde man suddenly sits up, quickly snuffing out half-burnt cigarette, now uninterested in its comforts. then he coughs briefly and shakes his head, chasing the unpleasant, intrusive memories away. his large figure leans over the desk, propped up on elbows, and his head bows down, boring closed eyes fiercely into the heels of his palms.
❛ what would it have been like? what if we never left? ❜ he doesn't like dwelling on these thoughts, the what-ifs. it's not healthy. it makes the nightmares worse. but rosinante can't help it, he's stuck in the mental loop now.
he imagines it again, growing up with a comfortable and generic life, brought up with the mannerisms and teachings that the dragons receive, with the belief that they are greater beings and all others are subservient. the muscles in his hands strain as rosinante entangles fingers into wavy, golden locks, and digs nails into his scalp. but the flashing images keep going — an arranged marriage, a relatively carefree life, his older brother eventually taking over the household as the elder son, pursuing art or whatever he felt like.
❛ but at what cost? ❜
rosinante's mind drifts to all the slaves owned by the world nobles, and the pain and sheer rage that this brought to the surface of ordinary, kind villagers outside the confines of mary geoise. how that same rage drove them to torture children—his elbows give out beneath him, and he allows his forehead to drop to the mahogany desk surface, fingers white knuckling in his hair. with russet eyes now squeezed tightly shut, he releases a shaky breath.
with where he was now, with what he had seen and experienced, he loathed the alternate possibility of becoming one of those people that could cause such pain and hatred — of being one of the few to maliciously, or even ignorantly, rob people of their autonomy and humanity. and even more so, after seeing the harm that people in power had caused to those he came to love, rosinante no longer wants to consider that a life he might have led.
rosinante,,, ROSINANTE !!!

shit shit shit, I slipped up. russet hues glance away, training attention on the ship's deck to avoid the pirate captain's suddenly intense gaze. the large man's teeth clench down around a slowly burning cigarette — one which rosinante was surprised hadn't been immediately swatted from his mouth by a catapulting, disembodied hand. honestly, he preferred that scenario over this, instead of having to face the clown's sincere words. he didn't want the sincerity, the emotional connect. that would make his job a lot more difficult.
rosinante's fist clenches at his side, and for a moment there is an unsettling and heavy aura that rolls off the shoulders of feather-plumed coat. but suddenly, golden eyebrows relax and a goofy grin spreads across his cheeks, pressing corners of maroon face paint closer to his ears. he turns his face and attention to the shorter man once more and slouches — though it does little to bring the towering blonde closer to the captain's eye level.
❝ oh, ha, sorry captain. ❞ eyes scrunch shut as he continues to grin, raising one hand in a meek, apologetic wave. ❝ did I say something weird?? shoot, won't happen again, promise. ❞

I think Rosi deserves to walk up to Doffy's cell in impel down, in his full dress white uniform, just to say "I lived bitch, and you look terrible in stripes."
