Batman has so many scars he's like a topography map, and the Joker could recognize him by feel even if he's never actually felt him before. Everything he's done to the man is mentally logged, categorized, and stored. Everything about Batman has been, whether he fully wants it to be or not.
Which is to say, the Joker will refuse to look at Bruce Wayne if he's shirtless. This can lead to many hijinks and questions.
Permasocial is something I actually want to turn into a series, because I rarely play with the identity aspect of their relationship. In most of my stuff John tends to know pretty fast that Bruce is Batman, or is aware already. In Permasocial, he has no clue. It would be fun to explore John meeting up with Batman a few times and ending up starting to help him, falling for him more and more because he feels useful and Batman is so cool. Meanwhile, he's having less and less of a taste for Bruce because he's wishy washy and distant. Getting annoyed by him, even. Unfortunate for Bruce, who is starting to like him more than he wanted to as he gets to actually know him as Batman.
β...Bruce?β
Grunting in acknowledgement, Bruce shifts his arm slightly to let John lay against him on the bed, but doesnβt move or speak otherwise, nearly drifting off again until thereβs an elbow jabbed into his side as John settles. He squint one eye open, but quickly closes it, his head pounding and easily letting him decide it doesnβt matter. All his muscles are loose and sore, and Johnβs shoulder was pressing into a bruise, but heβd rather him near than not.Β
βI put away all our stuff, but itβs not cleaned. So, be prepared to scrub off dried blood tomorrow. Or, I will. If youβre still not better.β When Bruce says nothing, still half dozing, John puts a hand to Bruceβs cheek and stares at him a moment, thumb brushing over his black eye, before murmuring with a sense of near fascination. βYou knowβ¦ Youβre weirdly cute like this.βΒ
Bruce struggles to look at him again, finally responding to clarify. β...Concussed?βΒ
Shameless, John snuggles against him. βYeah. But donβt let it happen too often. Youβre cute now, but youβre even more attractive when you can kick someoneβs butt. And you canβt do that like this. What if you get in some sort of danger, and youβve got a head injury?βΒ
Bruce turns to wrap an arm around John's middle, tugging him closer and sliding to lay his head on Johnβs chest, curled around him. The other manβs heart rate is fast, but steady, always seeming to be a bit high, and Bruce sighs in tired contentment at the familiar rhythm, relaxing.Β
βYouβre here.β
He slips into sleep as as the words fall out of his mouth, though heβd probably miss the look on Johnβs face even if he were awake, overwhelmed and fond.Β
John was aware that Bruce would probably never say how he felt so simply if he hadnβt been hit in the head with a metal pipe. But knowing that he felt John was capable of keeping him safe, that it wasnβt just empty assurance in the field, was enough to make him feel ready to burst.
If John doesnβt sleep himself for the rest of the night, too full of warmth and gooeyness and weird static in his gut, itβs fine. Bruce needs someone to keep watch over him anyway.
Imagine most Jokers of alternate universes all thinking they have the best sense of fashion. They meet each other and compare purple suits like they're in American Psycho showing off business cards.

WIPs I've been idly working or sitting on: -John gets upset at the local fair because Bruce doesn't realize he was supposed to actually kiss him on the tunnel of love. -Bruce gets sent a dick pic while he's at work, and has to deal with John when he gets home.
-Bruce is aware of every game route so far, having tried every option and John dying every time, just to wake up back on the day of the funeral. He's breaking, and he's starting not to be able to care about consequences.
-After fighting with Bruce at the fun house and being put back in Arkham, John's triggered heart condition is affecting him more than he wants it to. Unfortunately for anyone who cares, John also refuses to take any of his medication. And somehow, despite everything, Bruce does care.
-Bruce's parents never die, and the year before he's finally going to take over as CEO of the company he's told of a deal his parents had made with another major family where it was agreed he would marry their daughter to settle a debt. The issue is that she hasn't been seen in years. And in an even more stressful turn of events, she's not a daughter at all. It doesn't help that the way both families speak about John, it's obvious they expect him to just commit the other man to Arkham and move on. His strange behavior is certainly unsettling, but Bruce can't help but be intrigued, even if finally breaking the expectations put on him from birth will end up leading to a horror show.
"Why do you even have a yacht if you don't use it?"
Bruce isn't sure how to answer, only ever having boarded the thing the few times he'd needed to keep up a certain image, and he ends up shrugging, just being honest. "Everyone with money has a yacht."
John crosses his arms with a hum, staring at the boat, and he almost thinks that John is going to ridicule the concept before he asks another question, instead. "...Can we do the Titanic thing?"
Unsure the direction John's mind was going in, unable to predict him at the best of times, Bruce cautions.
"...Which part?"
Whatever John had actually meant, Bruce can't fully hold back a smile at the way he laughs.
Hey! It's Pride Month and I'm in the mood to write some Batjokes oneshots, and if the Telltale fandom is still alive and well, Bruce and John are my bread and butter! They'll only be around 3k most likely, but if anyone has a short idea or prompt they'd like me to take a crack at, whether it's fluff, angst, or anything else, let me know, and if it sparks something I can try to get it out! If you want an example of my other work I'm Clownandout on AO3, and I mainly write about Bruce and John already! I'm still working on Pulse and such, but having smaller things to clean the brain between chapters is a great break, and I'd love to put more finished work out, even if shorter!
His shitty attitude and grabbable waist have bewitched me
I often write Bruce as being much more aware of the danger that John poses, due to his natural line of thought, than taking into account the amount of control that John has over himself and actually in reality displays. Bruce, as Batman, and as a man who has faced traumas, automatically seems to try to go to damage prevention, especially by ways of martyrism, deflection, or control. I believe he absolutely would over react to John's state of being, and that John would only put up with so much of it before snapping at him, whether Bruce is trying to "help" him or not. Some of what Bruce does could and does help, but only if he listens to him, which Bruce has a serious habit of not fully doing to people. I do think that Bruce could get better at this, but a lot of my stories involves this aspect of his character in relation to John because as a result, John's behavior shifts with how Bruce, someone important to him, treats him. The different choices that Bruce makes heavily impacts the direction the story goes, which is one of the reasons I consider them paths as I do. But don't take that to mean that leaves John powerless within the narrative, as in them he's the foil to Bruce's behavior, able to call him out or show him that what he's doing is stupid, or even act as an antagonist and fully flip the tables.

I try to portray John as someone who has very, very serious issues that effect him very badly, and obviously so, to the point he's someone people are wary of due to his neurodivergant behavior. But who is actually much more capable of controlling himself than people believe, because the issues and problems he shows are just the ones that leak out past his coping mechanisms. He's a man who actually has a large amount of awareness for himself and others. He's been in therapy for a vast majority of his remembered life. He knows about his own tendencies and symptoms, as he tells Bruce about some of them if he lashes out at the church, and he speaks up about ableism and oppression, like when he tries to explain to Waller that calling him a creature is derogatory. John comes across as strange, not just because of his skin, but his natural behavior. He only becomes endearing due to his charisma and ability to fold himself into something other people want him to be in order to survive in the situations he's put in. But I don't think he's naturally "cute" in a way that most of the populace would think so, they would be much more wary of him until they spend enough time together for him to read them.
I like to think of my fanfic less of Alternate Universes and more like Alternate Paths.
Things that could potentially happen in a canonical sense or way but only to specific Bruce and Johns who make certain decisions. I try to keep them as in character as possible, and as in world and in their universe as possible, in their respective places.
But I love to explore how Bruce and John's characters, (especially Bruce's, as a point of view towards John's character), effect their behavior and relationships with each other when put in certain scenarios. Like John's tendency to run from his issues until he's pushed too far, or Bruce's habit of ignoring other people's concern for him and his decisions to the point he lets himself slip into self destruction.
These things are very present, and I want to give more "screen"time in a way that extends how something could potentially naturally go.
I like to think that John watched a lot of movies and television over the years in Arkham, and he has an attachment to old shows that would rerun on the channels they got at Arkham, like I Dream of Jeannie. It ties into the fact a lot of Jokers like to make references to classic or popular movies and old TV shows and comedies, and it just makes sense for him.
The song that John sings while in the bath in Hand over Hand is called Down In The Valley! It's a classic folk song, but here John knows it from the old comedy film "Stir Crazy", that has to do with a group of men stuck in an asylum.
In Hand Over Hand, Bruce is Not in love with John. He has the potential to be, and maybe someday he will, but as of where the story is now, he's just obsessed with John, which is a major difference. Bruce is stressed, he feels out of control, he feels guilty, he's discovering his sexuality, yes, but that's just a base lust and isn't genuine love, just curiosity. Bruce treats John how he does because he doesn't actually respect him as an individual, he sees him as someone or something he can have control over and "save." He's pulling an "I can fix him" when he's actively making him worse.
He's interested in and cares about John, he does consider him a friend, but at this point John is also assigned in his head as someone he failed, and he ends up putting those people on a pedestal and it can and did warp his view of him.

A mockup of Bruce's (soon to be John's) penthouse, in Hand Over Hand. There are two balconies, to the top and the bottom, the one with the pool on the bottom side of the image, off of the main area. You can see why a guy so colorful is going a bit crazy! Don't worry, once it's officially his, he'll get to do a lot more of what he wants with it.
