"You know the wind is just going to bring more leaves tomorrow", Castiel said, while pushing leaves into what was the 6th bag today.

Dean stopped raking and straightened up with a groan. "Fuck. I think you're right." He looked at the expanse of their property. "This might be a stupid idea. Why didn't you bring it up earlier?"

Castiel made a knot to close the bag. "You seemed to enjoy yourself."

"Hm."

Dean turned to the back of their property. "Do you see the big pile around the maple trees? Let's bring the bags over there."

"OK Dean."

Dean brought his rake and started raking the thick leaf cover into one place. "While I do that, empty the bags here."

Castiel started to untie a bag even if he was perplexed. "But why?"

"We're gonna make a big pile and jump into it."

Castiel tilted his head. "Jump into it?"

Dean beamed. "Yeah! It's fun!" His shoulders fell. "Or, at least, I think it is. Kids do it all the time, but I didn't get to. We were always in hotels."

Castiel understood immediately what that meant for Dean and he emptied the bags swiftly.

Soon enough, Dean and Castiel were running together and jumped in the leaves. They laughed and turned on their backs, looking at the few remaining blotches of colours in the branches above.

"It smells nice in the leaves, Dean."

"Yeah."

A quiet moment passed.

"Dean?" "mmm?" "Are you sleeping?"

"I wish."

Castiel moved closer and took Dean in his arms. Dean gave him a kiss.

Their nap smelled of crisp air, fallen leaves, and the soft warmth of a loved one.

Dean found Castiel gone again as spring was slowly warming up to the idea of green. The skies had turned cloudy, warm, and windy, a sure sign that the snow was going to melt soon and fast.

Dean was whining about the weather even more now that warmth was on its way. It came too fast, threatening the comforts of the routine he’d settled into, but it also came too slow, as Dean needed to hit the road to try and escape this unsatisfying routine he stuck himself into. Cas was back, and that was the best thing ever. But Cas kept leaving, and that ripped him apart each time.

Dean noticed Castiel becoming more pensive, more absent. He’d asked Cas if everything was alright, and Castiel had said yes. Dean would still lose him for days on end, even a whole week. Lord knows where he went. Lord knows how much sleep Dean lost over it.

One resigned, lonely morning, Dean trotted his coffee outside, just to see if he could soak up a bit of sun. Standing in his slippers and robe, he saw him.

Castiel was sitting cross-legged on a snow bank, a bird sitting in his hand in front of him. Castiel seemed to say a few words, and the bird puffed and wiggled down, as it got more comfortable.

“The f-“ Dean blinked. He walked closer. The bird was… sleeping? He put his mug down and climbed the snow bank a bit, sliding in his slippers, trying not to make too much noise.

“Hello, Dean.” Castiel’s voice was soft and low.

“Hey, man. What are you doing?”

“Providing warmth and comfort to this bird.”

Dean slipped, cursing all the way to the bottom, snow flying as he tried to grab something.

“Dean! Are you hurt?”

Dean cursed again. “I’m fine.” He wiped the snow off his hands on his robe. He eyed the snow bank. He carefully climbed back up and sat by Castiel. The bird was still sleeping. “How did I not wake this little dude up?”

“My grace is calm and he feels secure.”

Dean nodded. “Cool.”

Dean and Castiel looked at the bird sleeping for a while.

Dean did not dare to move. Castiel didn’t need to move.

Dean closed his robe tighter.

“You seem cold, Dean.”

“I should have brought my coffee up here.”

Castiel didn’t press. Dean sometimes wondered if he welcomed his patience or if it was torture.

Dean pursed his lips and frowned. “Alright, you win, my ass is frozen solid.”

Castiel’s eyes rested on Dean with their usual intensity. “You should not be sitting on the snow, then.”

Dean looked at their promontory. “Why did you have to come up here anyway?”

“It’s a nice vantage point to see the changes in nature. I missed that while we battled… everything.”

“Is that what you do when you’re away? Watch nature?”

“Mostly. There is as much wonder in the formation of a snowflake as there is in the almost imperceptible movement of the mountains.”

Dean snorted. “Uh, I’m lucky you didn’t decide to sit on top of a tree.”

“Would you have climbed the tree to join me?”

Of course I would. I want to be with you. All the time. Dean shrugged. “Maybe.”

Castiel studied Dean a moment. “Somehow I believe you.”

Dean crossed his arms, hiding his hands the best he could, his head stuffed in his neck. His train of thoughts was going fast and unchecked. “You were gone a whole week, man.”

“I was.” Castiel pondered, and added, “I don’t understand where you’re going with this.”

Dean looked in the distance as he turned into a ball, a futile attempt to ward off the cold. He felt it in his bones how underdressed he was for the actual weather. “I like having you around, that’s all.”

Castiel smiled softly. “I enjoy your company as well, Dean.”

Dean still didn’t meet Castiel’s eyes. “Then why do you go all the time?”

Castiel’s eyes narrowed, his brow furrowed. “Why do I go?”

Dean glanced at the bird, then concentrated on something on the horizon. “Yeah. You’re always off to places and stuff. You could… You could stay, you know. I mean, you could be here more. If you want. Watch the changes from here.” Dean couldn’t believe he finally said it. He panicked a little. “I know it’s not much, here, but there’s changes. I mean, the snow melts. Things will grow back. There are birds. And stuff. We have stuff here.” OK, Dean, just shut up.

It seemed to Dean Castiel took forever to answer. His heart was beating fast, he was afraid the angel needed, as it were, to fly from the nest. If the bunker could even be considered a nest. Or maybe Cas needed to look at beaches and palm trees. Maybe Dean didn’t have enough to offer for Cas to want to stay. He sure didn’t have beaches and pal-

“I would love nothing more, Dean.”

Dean was so busy with his own heartbeat and worries he didn’t register Castiel’s answer. “You what?”

“I would love that, Dean. If that is what you want.”

Dean chanced a glance at Castiel. “Yeah, man. Like I said, you can stay. You’re welcome to stay. All you want. It’s not much, here, but… It’s home, you know?”

The bird woke up, puffed its feathers, seemed to nod at Castiel and flew away.

Castiel didn’t move for a moment, looking at the ghost of the bird’s trajectory. “Home…”

Now, Dean couldn’t take his eyes off Castiel, as if his gaze had the power to keep Cas from flying away too. “Yeah, man. Home. Our home.”

Castiel’s lips lifted slightly in realization. “I have a home.”

“Yeah. Wherever I end up, there’s always gonna be a place for you. Always.” Dean couldn’t believe he was saying all this out loud, but it was all true and way overdue.

Castiel turned to Dean. “Thank you, Dean. It means a lot.”

Dean wanted to say ‘I love you man, of course my home is your home’, but it felt way too cheesy. “Hey, what are best friends for, right?”

“Indeed. I might stay, then.”

Dean was stunned. Cas said he might stay. Dean’s heart jumped, skipped a beat, and raced. “Cool.” He might stay. That’s a start.Dean had hoped he’d feel more relief, but his shoulders were still tight and his mind racing. Surely, Cas was just humoring him. He’s gonna leave again, he always does. But what if he stayed? For real? Did he… just have to ask? It was too easy. It couldn’t be that easy. But what if it was? No. Yes? No. …yes???

“You’re too cold, Dean.“

Dean looked up into Cas’ eyes, doubts lingering on the edge of his thoughts.

Castiel offered his now empty hand. “We should get inside and warm you up.”

Dean slowly pulled his eyes down to the hand. Castiel wanted Dean to hold his hand. Take his hand? Hold? What? His heart picked up. “Yeah, okay.”

Head empty, heartbeat racing, Dean saw his own hand take Castiel’s.

Oh man.

His hand was so warm.

Castiel’s hand held him so gently, and yet Dean felt the underlying strength, just waiting for him to be ready to be helped up to his feet.

Dean had never thought that Cas’ hand would feel like this.

He stroked Castiel’s finger with his thumb. He didn’t know he was going to do that.

Wow.

Castiel held Dean’s hand a little tighter.

Wow.

“Should we get up?”

Dean was shaken off his cloud a little. “What? Yeah, okay.”

Castiel’s hand became this firm, secure grip that somehow seemed to lift Dean up like he weighed nothing. Dean knew, somewhere in his mind, that the normal thing to do now would be to let go of Cas’ hand and thank him.

His hand was decidedly glued to Cas’ though. “Man, you’re strong.”

“Compared to humans, very much.”

Dean forgot how to carry a conversation. “Your hand is so warm.”

Castiel did something Dean did not see coming. He took his other hand. “You’re really cold, Dean. We should get back inside.”

“Yeah, okay.”

Neither of them moved. Castiel seemed to wait patiently; Dean’s entire attention was on their hands. He said he might stay. He said he might stay. Oh man I hope he stays.

Dean wondered if there was actual electricity coming from Castiel’s touch, going through him, buzzing in a loop. “Do angels make electricity?” What stupid question was that?

Castiel squinted, head tilted. “Not that I know of. But we have a different energy wavelength from humans.”

Dean heard words, but barely. The head tilt had killed him dead. He felt Cas’ hands being tugged towards him – wait what? Was he the one doing the tugging… ? What?

Oh shit, Cas was close now. Dean panicked. “If you stay, you can be friends with all the birds.” What?

Castiel’s smile was… amused? “I am already friends with all of them.”

Dean accessed a new level of fondness for Cas. He tugged again – geez why did he tug again what the f – shit Cas was like way too close now Dean could almost feel the warmth radiate from him. “Then stay with your friends. They need you.”

“OK, Dean, I’ll stay.”

Dean stopped breathing. He’ll stay. HE’LL STAY.

Dean’s vision blurred. His ears were pounding to the insane rhythm of his heartbeat. “That’s great.”

“You are talking about staying for the birds, Dean, right?”

Those eyes were too blue and too inviting. “Yeah, sure.” He couldn’t help but steal a glance at Cas’ lips. “Those little peckers need you too.” Need you too? WHY DID HE SAY TH-

Cas’ lips were even warmer than his hands. Dean couldn’t believe it. Their warmth radiated through him like the waves of a tropical beach. Right here in Kansas. Cas tasted like the answer to all the questions in the universe and strawberries. One brain cell thought that was weird, and all the others said ah shut up we’re kissing Cas, it’s the best thing ever. And Dean melted into it.

They finally broke off.

Dean caught his breath some.

“I never thought you’d finally kiss me, Dean.”

Dean tried to gather his thoughts. He failed. “What?” “I’ve wanted this a long time. But you seemed okay with our friendship. I respected that.”

That’s not – “Wait. You kissed me.”

Castiel smiled. “You’re the one who leaned in. I was surprised, but considering the strength and speed of your heartbeat, I trusted it was what you wanted.”

Dean squeezed Castiel’s hands. “Yeah.” Oh man, so much.He smiled. “Yeah. And you?”

Castiel’s smile widened. “Yes, Dean.”

Stupid jerk, he just said he’d wanted this a long time. Don’t you listen?

Castiel tugged at Dean’s hands. “Should we go inside? You’ll get cold again.”

Dean had regained enough brain power to smile mischievously. “And what will you do to warm me up?”

Castiel now pulled Dean against himself and passed their still holding hands behind the small of Dean’s back. “This.” And he kissed Dean again. “But in our home.”

Dean knew the owner of the games/anime/figurines/D&D/comic books shop. With a wink, he took Castiel by the hand to follow him in the backstore for “special” items. Dean found a nice book for Sam about lesser gods and their servants. “Maybe next time elves mess with us Rowena won’t have to make the trip from Hell, and we can deal with it ourselves,” he’d said. Eileen’s gift was a necklace again – but the pendant hid a small blade and a locket for salt or anything she’d like. “Parsley, sage, rosemary or thyme,” Dean said, smiling. Castiel tilted his head, squinting in thought. Dean kissed him.

“I love the kiss, but I don’t understand.”

“You’re too cute when you’re confused.”

Castiel smiled. “You must find me very… cute. I’m often confused by you.”

“The absolute cutest, babe.” Dean took Castiel by the waist and pressed himself against him. He kissed him again. “So cute.”

Castiel said, “I did understand the reference, Dean. But is it because Eileen loves this song?”

“No, it’s because she cooks a lot, now.”

“Oh.”

“You’ll get there, buddy.”

“Where?”

Dean smiled again. “To the place where you’re less confused by me and my jokes.”

“But I’ll get less kisses.”

Dean kissed him again. “Impossible.”

 They stopped by the liquor store to get something to bring to dinner. Dean called to Castiel, “Hey, found a really good red wine. We could bring that home for ourselves after dinner. I could make mulled wine for us.”

Castiel was looking at the bottle, his expression unreadable.

“What? You said you liked mulled wine when we first tasted it. I can make some, it’s easy.”

“Benny gave you the recipe I suppose.”

“Um, kind of, yes. It’s mostly to taste. Speaking of, we’ll need oranges, star anise, and cinnamon sticks, and cloves. I think.” Dean checked something on his phone. “Hmmm… I might pick up more stuff than I thought.”

 They were the last to arrive at Sam’s and Eileen’s. Big hugs were exchanged – a polite one between Castiel and Benny.

Christmas dinner was really good. Eileen had made the best turkey anyone had ever had. And Sam had found a way to mix animal blood in a way that felt special to Benny.

Benny thanked him. “It’s really appreciated, man.” Sam had nodded.

Dean said, “This turkey sure beats the electrocuted ham we had that one time on a case.”

Everybody laughed – even Sam – and Charlie insisted on knowing the whole story.

When Dean was done, leaving everyone laughing again, Benny piped up, with a smile, “And does it beat the rabid raccoons of Purgatory?”

Dean exploded. “Man! Those were vile! How dare you compare?”

Eileen said, “Raccoons?”

Dean and Benny went on about the menu in Purgatory, which was cut short because it was too gross.

Much to Castiel’s relief.

 Between the main course and dessert, everyone helped clean up and put away leftovers in containers. Everybody was taking some turkey and fixings back home. Even Benny, who had family – all humans – coming over tomorrow for a week.

 Dessert was had, cards were played, and Charlie and Benny left not too late. Castiel and Dean stayed a little longer so Dean would be sober enough to drive home. They gave Sam and Eileen their gifts, which they loved.

 Back home, Dean decided he wanted to make the mulled wine. Castiel cut the oranges in silence.

“What’s wrong, buddy?”

Castiel kept cutting the oranges. “Nothing. Why would anything be wrong?”

“You’ve been very quiet tonight, especially when Benny and I were talking about Purgatory. You didn’t even have a hand on my thigh like you usually do.”

Castiel still wouldn’t meet Dean’s eyes. “Oh. You noticed.”

Dean dumped the spices in the pot where the wine was already warming up. “Babe. I see you.”

One slice, two slices. “What do you mean?”

Dean turned and leaned back on the counter, his hands by his sides. He spoke softly. “Cas. Look at me.”

Castiel stopped slicing. He looked up.

“Babe, you’re my love. I notice when you’re… not yourself.”

Castiel looked at the oranges again. “You didn’t seem to notice this morning. Or at the carnival.”

Dean sighed. “Benny. Again.”

Castiel kept his eyes on the oranges.

 “Babe, you know, I did notice that sometimes you seemed crossed. I asked you if everything was fine, and you said you were fine. I respect that.”

Castiel moved the orange slices around. “Are you saying it’s my fault?”

Dean sat facing Castiel. “No. But it’s a two-way thing. Sometimes you say you’re fine, and I respect that, but I want you to know you can say it when you’re not fine.”

Castiel finished a pile of slices. “OK.”

“Babe. Cas.”

“Yes, Dean?”

“What is going on? What’s this thing with Benny? You don’t like him?”

Castiel finished a second pile of orange slices. He sat back. He looked at Dean. “It’s just… While I was trying to keep the leviathans from you, you were running around with him.”

“It’s more me dragging him around until we found you.”

“How do you say it… same but different?”

Dean chuckled. “Same difference.”

“Hm.”

 “Babe. It was always about you. Don’t you see?”

“But you seem so happy when you talk about Purgatory with him.”

Dean crossed his arms. “It’s not… It’s not because of him. He’s my friend, sure. I really like the guy. He saved my ass, I saved his… but Purgatory… it’s special.”

“I found it stressful.”

“Yeah, it is. But there was something pure about it.”

“Pure?”

“You can kill without consequence. They’re all monsters! There’s no ‘oh but what about the human inside’ or ‘this was a mother, what about her kids now’, or ‘how am I gonna explain this’, or escaping the cops, or-“

“I get it, Dean. Freedom.”

Dean uncrossed his arms and leaned on the table. “Yeah.”

Castiel nodded.

Castiel spoke as to himself. “Jealous…”
