Publications speak out over the lack of female cast members announced for J.J. Abram’s upcoming space opera

"There is absolutely no reason why there can’t be new characters added to account for the lack of women in the original trilogy and the newer trilogy." (x)

“Myths are powerful things, because we learn who we are by telling stories. When are we going to let little girls and kids of diverse races have fantasies as powerful as those given to white boys?” (x)

"Women make up 51% of the population of this planet. We can extrapolate that even in a galaxy far, far away and in a time that is long ago that ratio is somewhat the same. So why is Star Wars Episode VII so very, very dude-y?" (x)

"If you count up all the significant female characters who appear in the original Star Wars trilogy, the list reads as follows … Princess Leia."

It’s our fourth anniversary! That’s right, C4: Comic Creators’ Coffee Club is FOUR YEARS OLD! We’ve come a long way from the days of Jen and I camping out for an evening at Wired Coffee. 

So come celebrate with us at our meeting at Urban Eats Cafe on May 7, 2014, from 6pm to 8pm. In addition to our regular meeting activities, there will be CAKE! (Or maybe cupcakes.)

Check out my debut comic, Good Intentions! It’s your typical boy-meets-girl story, except the boy’s the antichrist and the girl’s an unassuming Catholic, but here’s the proper synopsis, too:

THE COST FOR WOMEN IN COMICS OF DOING BUSINESS IS TOO HIGH.

You need to help lower the price of women doing business in comics and in comics fandom to only the hard work. Not the hard work plus ducking threats online and off of violence, dodging groping, inappropriate advances, joking at the expense of the fat girl, the not “hot” girl, picking up and carrying around the short girl, creepshotting the cosplayer, stalking the professional.  You know, sexism. Violence. Attacks intended to create doubt and fear.

THE COST FOR WOMEN IN COMICS OF DOING BUSINESS IS TOO DAMN HIGH.

CALL OUT OTHER GUYS. If women doing this for themselves really really worked, I wouldn’t have to be saying this.  Start culling guys from your personal and professional circles that are bad citizens, that you have to apologize for.

CALL OUT MISOGYNY AND SEXISM. Intervene. Speak up. Vocally reject things like the “Big Cans” promotion at NYCC on your blogs, Twitter, tumblr, Facebook, right then and there when it happens.

THE COST FOR WOMEN IN COMICS OF DOING BUSINESS IS TOO DAMN HIGH. We’ve been paying and paying. I’ve paid with my health, self-esteem, and sense of safety. Other women have paid more.

THE COST FOR WOMEN IN COMICS OF DOING BUSINESS IS TOO FUCKING HIGH.  Men, help us lower that cost so it’s the SAME AS YOURS: hard work.

FAKE GEEK GUYS: A MESSAGE TO MEN ABOUT SEXUAL HARASSMENT

That’s crazy talk, right? So why does it happen all the time?

Honest question, dudes.

That women are harassed online is not news. That women in comics and the broader fandom cultures are harassed online is not news. That these women are routinely transmitted anonymous messages describing graphic sexual violence perpetrated upon them for transgressions as grave as not liking a thing… that is actually news to me, and it’s probably news to a lot of you guys reading this.

So what do we do about it?
