talking round in circles with your tongue // clint & caroline
Unlike most students, Caroline wasn’t exactly looking forward to summer vacation. Sure, the stress that was brought on my exams and assignments would be non-existent, but it would only mean that she had too much time on her hands. Even her job at the café wouldn’t be enough to keep her thoughts occupied. She had spent weeks on end drawing animations, shooting footage and editing film reels that she hadn’t had a lot of time to think about him.
She was sure that moving in with Danny, Isabelle and Nick for the summer would only make matters worse for her, even though she did need a place to stay. She was absolutely delighted upon hearing about Danny and Izzie’s engagement but she wasn’t sure she was crazy about spending the next four months cooped up in the same apartment as an incredibly loved up couple. She would have Nick, of course, but his own sadness was caused by another blonde Rousseau brother and she wasn’t sure that their shared sadness would be very comforting, especially when they were in the same building that Gabe had been in for so long.
Adjusting the straps of her backpack as she walked from class, Caroline pushed her hair away from her face, simultaneously pushing away any thoughts of Gabe from her head. She worried her bottom lip between her teeth and simply focused on the path in front of her, forcing herself to think about things like dumb cartoons and which superhero she could draw next.
Superheroes always reminded her of Gabe though.
She was more than glad for a distraction and her face practically lit up when one came in the form of a golden Labrador bounding towards her. The sun was high in the sky causing the dog’s fur coat to practically glow and Caroline was pretty certain that she had never seen a more adorable sight. The animal’s barking did not deter her and she immediately crouched ever so slightly in a welcoming stance, holding her hand out for the dog.
What she didn’t expect was for the dog to pounce on her, jumping up with excited yelps so she could rest her paws on Caroline’s shoulder and cover her face in slobbery dog kisses. At once, the redhead’s arms went to the dog’s torso to support her and happy giggles soon fell from her lips as she screwed up her face and simply let the dog have at it.
As quickly as the animal had arrived though, she was soon gone as someone, presumably her owner, began apologising to Caroline. The French woman pushed her hair out of her eyes once again to find that it had been obscuring her view of a man who was, admittedly, not that bad looking. She felt a swell of guilt rise up in her chest but told herself not to be dumb. She was allowed to think that guys were good looking, it didn’t make her a bad person.
For a moment she simply stood there, her eyes trained on the man’s blonde hair which she noted were devoid of any familiar looking curls and that both comforted and saddened her. When she managed to snap herself out of the silly mood though, she simply gave him a bright smile.
“No, of course not!” she reassured him, crouching down to her haunches so she could return to scratching the dog behind her ears. She grinned up at the owner.
“She’s lovely! What’s her name?” she asked, stopping herself there. She knew that she had the tendency to let her mouth run away with itself whenever she got nervous or excited and the combination of a hyperactive puppy and an attractive boy caused her to feel both at the same time.
She pushed herself onto her feet and tucked her red hair behind her ears, not entirely sure where to look and simply returned her attention to the dog.
“I mean, if it had been my cat then she would have probably clawed your eyes out by now,” she joked then immediately winced. Real smooth, Care.
This particular plan of Clint’s didn’t always go enormously well. He’d suffered some pretty specific and exceptionally painful fallbacks in the few months he’d been carrying out Operation Sundance (a name he’d coined with a proud smile and a toss of his California-blonde hair). Some chicks were simply not dog people, and were possessed with the tendency to shout and holler and clutch their prissy purses to their chest, unable to even thank Clint when he rushed in to save the day. Stuck up bitches. Other days, Sundance had been the problem. The rambunctious puppy that she was, there had been instances in which she’d soiled clothes, scratched cheeks and on one occasion, knocked a girl into an adjacent bush. He’d been pretty pissed at her for the rest of that day.
Listening to the high pitched giggles of the girl he’d skilfully chosen settled the anxiety in his stomach. She was smiling gratefully, arms thrown wide to embrace his pup, who was big for her age. After Clint had expertly called her back down, he puffed out his chest and waited for her to pull a shock of red hair from her eyes so she could survey him. Never taking his eyes from the girl - he wanted to express he was concerned about the possibility of his dog injuring her - he wound Sundance’s lead around his hand so she couldn’t stray from his side again.
“Are you sure you’re ok, like?” he said, forcing a smile onto his face as she threw one out herself. “She can be so clumsy sometimes. But I love her!”
He leaned down a little to tickle under the dog’s chin, rewarding her for her good catch. The corners of his mouth quirked up.
“She’s called Sundance.” he responded, directing his attention toward the dog. “Aren’t you, girl? My good girl.”
Despite the wince the girl gave at her own words, Clint tried to keep his face straight and resist the wrinkling of his nose. His distaste for cats was usually no secret to others, but despite this girl’s penchant for dogs, she was clearly a cat person. An awkward, half-baked laugh sprung from his lips, resisting the urge to play with his expertly-gelled hair to detract from the way his face had contorted painfully.
“That’s so cute.” he said, his voice flat in a way that let everyone know he didn’t think it was cute at all. Cats were so evil, man. He tried to shake this momentary lapse off, giving the dog one last fuss before turning his attentions back to her.
“No scrapes, no bruises? You don’t need my insurance details?” he said, his stab at humour an obvious ploy to learn her name.

talking round in circles with your tongue // clint & caroline
The morning hadn’t gotten off to a particularly good start for the California native. He wondered what kind of sick world he lived in where his own sister had the nerve to snub him. Clint had always thought she’d gotten rather uppity since their Dad had employed her to model his latest clothing line, using big words like ‘dependable’ and ‘trustworthy’ to explain why, despite the hiring of relatives, Clint hadn’t been allowed to set foot inside the family business for a good few years. Clint still stood by the idea that Summer’s head had grown so enormously due to their Father’s treatment of her. So much so that she couldn’t even spare five minutes to talk to her own brother on the phone. And Clint hadn’t even wanted much from her. Not really.
Attempting to push his snobby, self-righteous sister from his mind, Clint had taken solace in the one girl who did truly care about him. That little lady being his yellow lab, Sundance. The blonde crouched in the open doorway of his apartment, the lead wrapped around one hand as he beckoned the dog closer, her tail wagging in the air happily. She was soft as shit, God bless her, and whilst Clint’s first intention when purchasing her was that she’d make a cool ass guard dog, or something, he quickly learned that she’d sooner roll on her back to let a burglar rub her tummy than bite his hand off. But Sundance did have a particular set of skills, meaning she wasn’t totally useless.
Clipping her lead to her collar and pushing his earphones into his ears, a heavy bass started playing in his ears as he set off on his daily walk with his dog. Sundance ambled along happily, grateful for the sunshine in her fur and the wind in her face. She tripped stupidly over her too-big puppydog paws as Clint jogged slowly along the edge of the university campus, keeping an eye out for anyone who might catch his eye. He was walking for only a little while when he spotted her from a mile off, a redhead maybe a little younger than him weaving in and out of the shade as she walked. From far away, Clint couldn’t exactly tell whether she was good-looking, per say. Like facially. But she was hot.
“Alright, Sundance.” Clint insisted, crouching down next to her. “Don’t mess this up, alright? I want that one.”
Patting her bum, he watched as she set hurtling off toward the girl in question, barking giddily as she was freed from her leash. Clint hesitated a moment before jogging after her, making sure not to call out to her so as to stop her reaching the girl. His feet beat heavily against the pavement and he slowed to a stop just in time to see Sundance reach up and place both paws on the girl’s shoulders, lapping at her face happily.
“Sundance! Down!” he insisted, the dog springing guiltily onto all-fours. “Bad dog.”
He managed to push a guilty smile onto his face, giving the woman a quick once over. Pride swelled in his chest as he learned that his first deductions had been correct. She was hot.
“God, I’m so sorry about her.” he shook his head, as if to say ‘what can you do?’ before leaning down to attach the dog back to her lead. “She didn’t hurt you, did she?”
