I think of what it means to be a straight line.  I think of its built-in elegance–how beautiful efficiency can be.  I consider the horizon at different times of the day–in the morning, when the sky stacks itself on top of the water like supplicant hands; in the afternoon, when the tide unfurls its mouth into a cagey grin as it swallows the shore; in the evening, when only the ghost of that rendezvous between where we walk and where we dream hovers beneath the moonlight.  My grapefruit, his bold box; my jangling ring of keys, his deadbolt lock; my tears, the grim space between his lips; the arch in my lower back, the flat of his hands–they all meet somewhere, I suppose, in the amber flecks of his eyes where my laughter finds a warm home…  Point A to Point B, the points being my heart to his, as we figure out a way to straighten the ripcord and pull it taut.
