Highly recommend, when acquiring the phone number of a new acquaintance, asking them "Do you prefer texts or calls?" and then adding their preference as a note on their contact.

If they don't care, "no preference" means I'm doing whatever is more accessible to me at the time.

People act like this is the pinnacle of consideration when I get their number, so just passing it along in case it's not common practice.
