Heather’s bedroom smells like expensive perfume and something sweet that Veronica can’t put her finger on. The lights are off except for the soft glow from the vanity mirror. Outside, Westerburg is quiet in a way that makes everything feel loud inside Veronica’s head.
They’re sprawled on Heather’s bed, heels kicked off somewhere across the room. Heather’s on her stomach, flipping through a magazine she’s already read twice. Veronica was sitting cross-legged against the headboard, wearing one of Heather’s sweaters. Heather said it looked better than what she’d showed up in anyway.
“So,” Heather says, not looking up. “Truth or truth?”
“That’s not how the game works.”
The blonde shrugs, still focused in on her magazine. “It is when I’m hosting.”
Veronica considers, then nods. “Fine. Truth.”
Heather smirks, finally glancing at her. “Tell me a secret.”
Veronica planned to answer with something safe, something surface level, but the quiet was pressing in, and the late hour did something dangerous to her spine, loosening her tongue.
“I’ve never kissed anyone,” she admits.
Heather stills.
The page of the magazine bends slightly under her fingers. “You’re lying.”
Veronica shakes her head. “No.”
Heather rolls onto her side, propping her head up with her hand, eyes locked on Veronica’s. “Like, ever?”
“Ever.”
Heather squints. “Not even at a party?”
“No.”
“Spin the bottle?”
“No.”
Heather sits up. “Are you some kind of prude or something?”
Veronica laughs. “God, no. I just—” She stops, then sighs. “I don’t know. It’s just never happened.”
Heather studies her, expression unreadable. “That’s actually kind of hilarious.”
“Thanks.”
“I mean,” Heather adds quickly, “why not? Why haven’t you let Jessie James get a peck in?”
Veronica shrugs, pulling at the sleeve of the sweater. “Guess I just don’t want it to be dumb.”
Heather snorts. “Veronica, first kisses are always dumb.”
“Yours wasn’t.”
Heather pauses. “Mine was extremely dumb.”
“Liar.”
Heather grins. “Okay, fine. It was dumb and hot. But still.”
They lapse into silence. The air feels heavier now. Veronica stares at the ceiling, searching for invisible cracks.
After a moment, Heather says, casually, “Do you want to get it over with?”
Veronica turns her head. “What?”
“Your first kiss,” Heather says. “Do you want to just.. get it out of the way?”
Veronica laughs, nerves bubbling up. “With who?”
Heather arches an eyebrow. “Who do you think?”
Veronica blinks. “You’re joking.”
“Obviously,” Heather says, waving a hand. “But, I don’t have to be.”
Veronica’s heart starts doing something stupid, like, jumping jacks or whatever. “You can’t be serious—”
Heather scoots closer, cutting her off. “Relax. It’s not like it means anything. Just a practice round.”
“A practice round,” Veronica repeats.
“Yeah,” Heather says. “I just said that.”
Veronica swallows. “You’re serious.”
Heather tilts her head, eyes glittering. “Scared?”
“Pff. Me? Never.”
Heather’s grin softens. She cups Veronica’s cheek with her hand, and brings their faces close together.
When their lips meet, it’s light. Almost nothing.
Heather pulls back immediately. “See? No big deal.”
Veronica doesn’t say anything.
Her mouth is buzzing, like something electrical just passed through it. She’s acutely aware of how close Heather still is, how her other hand has landed on her knee without asking.
“That was it?” Veronica asks, quieter than she intended.
“What? Were you expecting us to go full lez and makeout?”
Veronica shakes her head. “No! I don’t know. It just.. felt like nothing.”
Heather scoffs. “Wow. Do you know how many people would pay to be in your position right now, Sawyer? If I would’ve known you’d be so critical I wouldn’t h—”
“God, no Heather—” Veronica interrupts. Then, softly, “I’m sorry. I just.. Can we try again?”
Heather freezes.
“For real this time,” Veronica adds quickly. “Just.. so I know. Y’know, what it’ll be like when I kiss JD.”
Heather’s eyes flick down to Veronica’s mouth. Just for a second.
Heather exhales, slow. “Okay. But only because I don’t want to be seen in public with a lip virgin.”
“Yeah, right,” Veronica agrees.
This time, Heather kisses her properly.
She cups Veronica’s face with both hands, thumbs warm against her cheeks, and presses in gently, unhurried. Veronica’s breath catches, then she melts into it. She kisses back without really knowing how, and Heather adjusts instinctively, tilting her head, deepening it just enough to make Veronica’s knees go weak.
It lasts longer than it should.
When Heather pulls away, they stay close, foreheads pressed together. Neither of them says anything for a while.
“Well,” Heather says finally, voice a little rough. “Congratulations. You don’t suck.”
“Thanks..?”
Heather lies back, staring at the ceiling. “So?”
“So, what?”
“So,” Heather says, smirking faintly, “was it dumb?”
Veronica smiles, small and to herself. “No.”
Heather’s smile falters, just for a fraction of a second.
“Good,” is all she says.
They don’t kiss again.
Veronica wishes they would.
You know, for more practice.
