Too Little, Too Late || Cleo & Ben (tw: rape, abentee father, ed, alcoholism, etc)
Ben listened thoroughly to Cleo as she spoke, taking in every word and gesture. Every expression spoke of a pure sadness, one that had been bottled up for so long, and it hurt Ben to witness it. He had never been in this situation before except for with Alice. That night before they left LA came rushing to Ben’s mind; how Alice was so broken, pleading for Ben to ignore her current condition and to hold her. There was a pain in her eyes, a sort of fear. It had expanded to all features of her face and Ben could see it through how defensive she was. That was how Ben found out, that was one of the first times he had seen it happened in action, and it hated it for her. Now, the person in front of him showed that same fear, but it wasn’t Alice, this was Cleo, and Ben would still help her regardless.Â
Ben shook his head, because he didn’t really know why they stopped being friends. Their broken friendship was one of the first things he found out about Alice. They had hung out on the swings at the park, playing twenty questions, and she would talk about how they used to do things and how Cleo slept with her boyfriend, causing the friendship to tear apart. So, he listened carefully to the real reason, and as he listened, Ben knew he wasn’t going to like it. His blood boiled beneath his skin as he listened to to her. He wasn’t very happy of the result.Â
Ben had to take a minute to process what Cleo had just told him. It was a lot to take in, realizing that one’s friendship had broke apart due to something like that, realizing that one of his closest friends had actually experienced that; and suddenly Ben realized; this was her secret. She was being completely open to him and he was listening, but Ben couldn’t actually believe that she would trust him with something that huge. All year, Ben almost forgot how everyone had a secret to hide. He’d only learned a few of them, and by people who sincerely trusted him. Grayson and his dad, Alice and her disorder, and Danielle with her past addiction, and now Cleo with her rape. Ben never stopped to think about just how many secrets he had learned, but he found himself shocked by each and every one of them, shocked to find out that he actually knew people who went through those situations. But he can’t say much, after all, he was the alcoholic.Â
Ben looked up at Cleo, tears rolled down her face and he felt sick. He couldn’t believe that someone would do something so cruel and terrible to her. Ben only knew her as a pretty face back in sophomore year. No one was really known back then. Ben had just started his reputation when he was fifteen, mourning from the loss of his mother, he had channeled it into trying to fit in, falling into his drinking habit along the way. For all he knew, it could have happened at his party, and that made Ben feel completely sick. He could have set up the perfect scenario for whoever did it to her, and that makes him feel a tad bit guilty.Â
"Did you just find out?" He asked, looking around his car for a tissue for her. When he couldn’t find one, he offered his jacket sleeve, wiping a few tears from her face as he tried his best to comfort her. "Is that why you’ve been having so many headaches? It’s been trying to fight off the memories?" Ben doesn’t know how he understands it, but he guesses it’s because of his psychology class he’s in now. "Who did it, Cleo?" He said, his blood still boiling, "Whoever the fuck he is, he needs to make sure he never meets me, because I don’t fucking know what I would do if I saw him, but I wouldn’t be able to control myself." He told her, trying to look her directly in the eyes. "I understand… how everything can turn to shit. He better hope he never meets me, I’ll make him regret it, Cleo, I swear I will."
When Ben asked who it had been that had raped her, Cleo wasn't sure what to say. Yes, she knew now. But that didn't mean she had any right to ruin Ben's life with the knowledge. Okay, that was probably a little dramatic, but it would at least ruin his relationship with Alice's brother. Cleo didn't want to be responsible for that. And, she knew Ben. He was caring and passionate and seemed to live by the saying 'act first, think later'. She didn't want him doing anything stupid, not for her. He had literally just said that he wouldn't be able to control himself if he met the guy. How upset would he be if he knew he already had met him? If he knew that Alice was living in the same house with him? It wouldn't be good, that was for sure.Â
"I can't remember." Cleo told him, figuring it was her safest bet. If he saw through it, then she would tell him. But, she had spent so many years clueless about his identity, so she was pretty used to the feeling of it. "I was so wasted and so scared. I suppressed a lot of it, I think. And that's what these headaches must be." she told him, telling the whole truth except for her rapist's name. "PTSD or whatever. But it's coming back slowly and painfully. Little flashbacks here and there. Dreams, sometimes. But never his face." which had been true earlier that day. But that flashback she had gone through in the doctor's office had shown her everything, from start to finish, Todd's face included.Â
Cleo's breathing was speeding up again, like the beginning of a panic attack or something. "I don't know what I'm going to do, Ben. What if the flashbacks don't go away?" she managed to get out through her gasps for air, which were starting to sound more and more like broken sobs. "I can't live my life like this!" it felt like her ribs were being crushed by a steamroller. Cleo hadn't had a panic attack in a long time. Not since the first few weeks after being raped- before she had suppressed the memories. They had taken her over and made her a nervous wreck, so she pretended they didn't happen, which eventually lead to forgetting about them. But now they were back and worse than ever, and she knew now that, while she couldn't live with them, she also couldn't escape them.Â
Too Little, Too Late || Cleo & Ben
The Cleo standing in front of Ben at that moment was not the Cleo that Ben knew. She seemed scared, and hesitant, and that was something he was surprised to witness. Cleo was so confident, so fierce with everything she did. She was very independent and blunt, critical and intimidating. Right now, the Cleo in front of him was vulnerable and frightened, and he didn’t know how to take that. He didn’t know what to say or what to do, because like Grayson, he wasn’t very good with words and how to have a serious conversation.Â
Ben hugged her back with everything he had. He knew this could do more talking than words ever could, so he tried to show Cleo how much he cared through the simple embrace. He tried to show his integrity. He was trustworthy and wasn’t judgmental because like Ben knows, he is in no position to be judging others. He felt a punch of pain electrify him. He hated seeing people like this. He hated seeing people so low and in the gutter. It made him sick to his stomach. All he ever wanted to do was making everyone happy, even if that meant he stayed miserable.Â
They made their way into the car and Ben listened thoroughly to the dark-haired girl sitting next to him. “You can trust me, Cleo.” He told her sincerely, hoping to say all the right and truthful things, trying to ease the tension and make Cleo a little more comfortable with the situation. “You can tell me anything.”
"The doctor came back with my test results and said that everything looked okay. Then... she started asking me questions." Cleo began, figuring it would be a good place to start off. "She didn't diagnose me or anything, but... I think I figured out why my head has been acting up."Â
Cleo took a breath and wiped the remaining tears from her eyes, though she was sure more would be coming soon. "Did anyone ever tell you why Alice and I stopped being friends?" she asked, deciding she had to start from the beginning. "If they did, they were wrong. I mean, yeah, I fucked her boyfriend. But... not even Alice knows why that happened." Cleo had to prepare herself for this story. She had never told anyone this, or written it down, anything. She hated herself too much for it. But, this was Ben. He wouldn't hate her. If anything, he would hate Todd for doing this to her.

Too Little, Too Late || Cleo & Ben
Ben had been sitting in the waiting room at the doctor’s for quite sometime. He didn’t particularly like the doctor’s, but he liked it a whole lot better than the hospital. It was a lot easier to stay calm and not panic or most importantly to not think of his mother. He offered to bring Cleo to her appointment, anyway. He wouldn’t offer that if he had an issue with the place they were going. He was perfectly fine while sitting in the waiting room, flicking through his phone and going through instagram, finding random pictures people had posted from that day.Â
Ben had also offered to bring Cleo because he was worried about her. All she talked about was her terrible headaches, and Ben was no doctor, but he knew that she should get it checked out. When he first heard, however, he only offered to take her if she ever needed to go. He wasn’t going to force her to go anywhere she didn’t want to. Ben out of everyone should know what that feels like. He liked being there for Cleo, as well. They hadn’t hung out in a long time, mostly due to Ben being busy with trying to keep up with school and Cleo doing her own thing that she normally does.Â
Suddenly, Ben’s thoughts as he scrolled through his dashboard were interrupted when he heard the door to the waiting room open. It was Cleo, and Ben stood up, prepared to walk out with her and talk to her about what the doctor said. However, Cleo didn’t even turn to look at him. Instead, she rushed right to the exit and into the parking lot and Ben arched an eyebrow, confused by the sudden change in plans. He grabbed his jacket and jetted to catch Cleo. When he did, he ran in front of her, calling out to her for her to stop, as he cuts her off her path, and puts his hands on her arms. “What happened?” He asked.
Cleo heard Ben calling after her, but she didn't want to stop until they were out of the building, where they wouldn't cause a scene. In the parking lot he cut her off and she gave in, lacking the energy or even the desire to fight him. She tried to regulate her breathing before she answered him, it being staggered from the combination of walking quickly and crying.
But, then there was also the issue, could she even tell Ben? Of course she could, but did she want to? How would he react? Would he insist she tell people? How much of this was too much? Cleo looked at him then, right into his eyes, and she knew she could tell him every part of it and that he would be there for her no matter what came out of her mouth next.Â
"I just-" she stammered, realizing she couldn't even say it out loud if she wanted to. Not right now, anyway. So, as her bottom lip began to wobble again, she wrapped her arms around Ben's torso and just hugged him, burying her face into his chest. And that probably said a lot more than any words could. When Cleo was finally calm enough to speak normally, at least for a moment, she broke the hug and told Ben "We'll talk in the car. I don't really need eavesdroppers right now."
But, before they got in the car, Cleo gave Ben a warning. "You can't tell anyone about any of this. No if's, and's, or but's for any reason. I'm serious. Okay?"

Too Little, Too Late || Cleo & Ben
The doctor badgered Cleo for a few more minutes before giving up on her confiding whatever it was that she was obviously hiding. Cleo's head was too busy spinning from the memories of that night flooding back to her for her to care in the slightest about not showing how terrible she felt. How scared she was. So, the doctor prescribed her some painkillers for her headaches and told her to come back in a week if nothing changed.Â
Slowly, Cleo made her way back to the waiting room, still not sure what to feel about her revelation. Todd Mercer, Alice's older brother. He was the one that had done this to her. He was the person who had ruined her so suddenly and completely. Tears were falling from her eyes now, too wrapped up in herself to care about anyone seeing. The last time she had felt this awful was when it had actually happened. What was she going to do? What the fuck was she going to do? She couldn't tell anyone! But, she couldn't let him get away with it, either! He had broken her. She would never be the same person ever again. He had betrayed her! Todd had watched her grow up, innocent and pure, and then he took that from her. He raped her.Â
When Cleo finally got to the waiting room, she felt eyes on her and immediately felt threatened. No one could know. No one could see her like this. She had to get out of here. The brunette rushed to the exit, not even stopping to say a word to Ben, who had so kindly brought her to her appointment and waited for her. She knew if she even tried to say anything at this point, she would break down, and she couldn't do that here. Maybe a long time ago, back when she was herself, but Cleo was a different person now. A lot less trusting, and now she knew who to thank for that.
