he stood in front of the water tower, staring up, lost in thought. he was trying to see if he felt like climbing it to get a better view of the stars or if he’d instead just do his stargazing from the ground tonight. another part of him was also thinking about who he could possibly call up right now to join him for a late-night smoke and some stargazing. but no one really came to mind. “ah, fuck it,” he whispers, thinking out loud, making his way over to the ladder that leads up the side of the water tower. just as his hand reaches the second step, he hears the sound of leaves crunching, the footsteps of a stranger, and his attention turns towards the direction of the noise. the only thing he was nervous about was the possibility of now not being able to stargaze at all, which would sadden him; it was the only way he found some peace in his mind.
“uh, hey. heh. you wouldn’t happen to be here because you’re also thinking of climbing the water tower to stargaze from up there, would you? because, you know, if you’re not and you’re up for an adventure with a scrub like me….” he trails off, laughing a little, “i promise to keep you safe, though, if that helps.

“It turns out it’s been a whole year since my break up.” Ella clicked her tongue, looking around the room. “So… i’m going to do what any sane person would do and have a party to celebrate. Should i put you down as a single or do you need a plus one?” She raised a brow, grinning slightly.

Belle was running late, her car was in the garage and the rain had covered the bottom of her jeans in little specks of mud as she’d taken out the trash at the back of her cafe. She headed to the door and found it had jammed shut with the rain. “Shit,” she breathed, pulling at it. She looked up, the rain coming down heavier. “Oh my god, my hair. Door open.”

despite the rainy weather jasper couldn’t help but feel genuinely at peace today, which was something they hadn’t felt in a very, very long time. they stood outside the cafe, smoking a spliff, by themselves with an umbrella shielding them from the rain. a hot cup of half drank coffee in his hands was practically screaming his name and he couldn’t wait to get in. they watched as the rain fell from the skies above, pitter pattering against the building and gently hitting the pavement. these days it seemed gloom tended to cover the town of claybourne despite how much they tried to bring a little light to it, but he couldn’t really blame anyone. the disappearances of the locals around town was starting to become more than just a little worrisome. when would it end?
on top of that, jasper was constantly paranoid about his every action. what if they accidentally did something suspicious? what if they found themselves at the wrong place but the right time to be framed? these thoughts constantly plagued his mind. just before he could get lost in thought again they noticed someone approaching the cafe, so he takes another hit of his spliff, opening the door for them, “hey there! allow me to get the door for you,” they offer, giving them a friendly grin, tossing his half smoked spliff to the side, “i was just heading in as well. in hindsight i should’ve probably worn a jacket that was more warm, but this one had black feather, i felt like being fluffy, and so, here we are. wet and cold.”

He couldn’t have picked a more exhausting front for his real income. Sure working on cars was something he was good at. Almost as good as pushing pills, but the physical labor often made him reconsider his choice. “Alright”, he said approaching the other. “I got some bad news, and more bad news. What do you want first?”
"Brand new day," Ximena whispered to herself as she flipped the sign on the door to her cafe so it read 'OPEN'. She turned and made herself a cappuccino, knowing the shop would be empty for some time. Taking her finished drink over to her spot in the corner of Coral Brews, she took a small sip of the boiling drink and opened up her laptop to update her inventory. Busy, typing away, she failed to notice there was somebody approaching her just as she was about to take another hot sip. Startled, she spilled her drink onto her laptop, "Jesus, fu-, my laptop!" she exclaimed, picking it up and turning it on it's side, "Tissues, tissues, grab me the tissues, it's right there!" she demanded, pointing to the tissues on the counter, huffing with frustration.

“Oh! Would you pick that up for me? My hands are a bit…full.” A piece of wood dropped from Yousef’s grasp, hitting the soft earth with a dull thud before bouncing into the brush. He sighed. “I know. I know. It’s springtime. There’s really no need for firewood, but the inn has fireplaces. And what sort of fireplace has no wood? People come here from big city apartments, and they’ve never had a fireplace. So they have to burn something. I suppose a person could burn love letters. Or incriminating photographs. But I find most tourists lack imagination, so this will have to do.” He flashed a smile, as if all of this inane babble was some sort of comedy routine. “It is rather cold still, though, don’t you think? Maybe it’s me. I spent all winter chopping it up, and it was unseasonably warm. So I didn’t get to use it. Do you think that’s global warming? I guess it must be. If you have a minute, I could use a hand getting these the rest of the way.”
“So I go to put my perfume on this morning and realise how low it is. My ten year old daughter has been using it. Then I looked and she’s done the same with my moisturiser and then she comes downstairs in my cardigan,” she let out a small laugh, hand on her hip. “It’s only going to get worse, isn’t it?”
“What’s this about a figure on the beach and people disappearing?”, Vihaan had been back in Claybourne for a hot second and since his return from New York he had mostly kept to himself and his work, not wanting to run into a certain individual. “Me? I have been down at the lake a couple of times late in the evening and at night, been too busy to go in the day. But I never saw anyone when collecting my samples…” It took him a moment, but then he began to slowly realise what that might been. “Oh, well could be…”

“I’ll be honest with you,” Elias started, unsure who exactly he was sat beside at this point. “I don’t think it’s worth worrying about until we have reason to believe it is.” he gestured his hand out in front of him, “I mean, it’s the perfect place for someone to get caught up in some kind of hijinks. A surprise date, or, an impromptu trip somewhere. Heck, I’m sure there’s people skulking around in masks of some kind. It could just be a big prank.” he shook his head, knowing he wasn’t elocuting his point exactly how he had hoped to. “I know everyone’s on edge, but, correlation isn’t always causation. I think everyone should just try and relax until we know a little more. Don’t you? I mean, people spent a long time and a lot of money prepping all this stuff, and making all that food. It seems a waste.”
