To reject homophobia is to stand for humanity. It is to recognize that diversity is not a weakness but a strength, and that love, identity, and self-expression should never be met with hate. Silence in the face of discrimination allows injustice to grow, but speaking out with courage builds a world rooted in equality and compassion.

Respect means treating every person fairly, regardless of their sexual orientation. Dignity means honoring their worth as human beings. Justice means ensuring no one is excluded, bullied, humiliated, or denied opportunities because of prejudice.

Kenya: A Promise That Turned to Ash

Kenya was once considered a haven for LGBTQ+ refugees in a hostile region. But that hope has faded. LGBTQIA+ refugees who lived Kakuma camp were often segregated into zones like Block 13 supposedly for protection but it marked them as visible targets. Lesbians faced sexual violence with no police intervention one homophobic arson attack on Block 13 left one person dead.

The Kenyan government has nearly halted approvals for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers. Its refugee commissioner declared that persecution for sexual orientation is not grounds for protection. A lawmaker has even proposed deporting refugees who engage in same-sex acts.

South Sudan: Exile Inside Exile

South Sudan criminalizes same-sex intimacy with up to fourteen years in prison. Queer refugees who fled to Gorom Refugee Settlement many from Uganda, Rwanda, DRC and even Kenya find no peace.

In December 2024 host community members attacked Gorom, specifically targeting LGBTQ+ refugees, tents slashed, people beaten and robbed.

Since January 2024 over 450 LGBTQ+ refugees have been forced to make the desperate journey from Kakuma to South Sudan fleeing one danger for another.

Becoming a refugee is not a choice. But how we respond is.

You are not alone. Your identity is valid, your story matters, and your dreams deserve a chance to thrive. Many of us have been forced to leave our homes, families, and communities in search of safety, dignity, and the freedom to live as our authentic selves. The journey is often filled with fear, uncertainty, and hardship, but your courage is stronger than the challenges you face.

Today, I call upon governments, humanitarian organizations, human rights defenders, and communities across the world to stand with displaced LGBTQ people. Protection should not be a privilege it is a human right. Every LGBTQ refugee deserves access to safety, shelter, healthcare, education, legal protection, and opportunities to build a future free from discrimination and violence.

Let us create a world where no one is forced to flee because of who they are or whom they love. A world where LGBTQ refugees can heal, belong, pursue their dreams, and contribute their talents without fear.
