Giving up on tumblr
well, after about 3 weeks of not being able to access my blog on tumblr (it never loads) and haing tried to contact support, i give up. Â I'm moving the blog back to blogger.Â
Not only that, but lately, I've had a lot of criticism of Ubuntu.  Though I believe they DO A LOT for the marketing of Linux into the mainstream, I am not happy that they seem to be abandoning the desktop for the mobile paradigm. Â
Mark Shuttleworths comments which pretty much ended my love of Ubuntu was when he suggested that users who do not contribute code, have no  interest in the direction of Ubuntu.Â
"...Nobody has a right to expect someone else to devote their time to a mission in which they have no interest".
Canonical is a business, I forgot about that. It's not a bad thing. I however, forgot this and got myself wrapped up in the community.Â
At any rate... before I go into a rant.... I am moving everything over to www.clarifylinux.org -- on blogger.Â
If you can actually read this, that's nice. I haven't seen this blog in 3 weeks. Only the dashboard.Â
Clarify Ubuntu site is blank :/
No idea what's going on but the clarifyubuntu site comes up blank for me.
I still haven't managed to give up on my (now) old school Gnome2 desktop so I haven't yet made the full leap to Unity (BLAH!) or Gnome3 (Ugh!).Â
Though I continue to support Ubuntu I believe the choice of Unity was simply *bad*.Â
For those if you a bit braver, hop on over to this article where they provide some nice pointers on Ocelot.Â
EDIT: and if that wasn't enough, head on over to webupd8.

I must say, I'm getting more disappointed with both Ubuntu and Gnome by the day. Couldn't agree with this article more.
One of the largest hurdles with learning Linux is always the directory structure. While not complicated it is very different from any Windows based operating system which is where most new Linux learners come from. Here's a quick explanation of the most important directories on a Linux distribution.
Enable Google Cloud Print in Linux with Chrome flags
If you are using Google chrome Beta or Developer builds (possibly stable but I haven't checked) you can enable Google cloud print for printing Google Docs.Â
To do this simply enter "About:flags" in the URL bar and click enter. Â Scroll down and enable both the "Print Preview" and "Google Cloud Print". At the bottom of the page you will save the settings.Â
Now, in a document, when you click on the print button
You will be shown a print preview of the document
Notice the "destination" drop-down menu. If you have already set-up Google cloud printing you should have "cloud printers" as a destination.Â
Now, just select the right one and happy printing :)
UPDATE: I just realized, with both flags enabled, it allows cloud printing from *any* print job from the browser (not just from Docs). Cool :)

How to Create Samba (Windows) Shares in Linux the Easy Way When youâre using Linux, a popular way to share files with Windows is via Samba. For beginners, it can be a real pain to configure it manually, but with the right tool, itâs as easy as pie. Way back in 2007, we showed you how to install Samba on Ubuntu. Things havenât changed much, except that there are more ways to configure it. If you donât have Samba installed and you arenât afraid of the command-line, just follow the first step in that article and rejoin us here for the rest. Is Tux Still the Right Mascot for Linux? Now that Linux has reached the ripe old age of 20, it seems fair to say the software is officially "mature." Were it a human, after all, it would likely be allowed to drive by now, and maybe even to drink, too. Just as we humans tend to engage in a little self-analysis and image-updating when we reach major milestones like these -- updating ourselves to reflect who we have become, as it were -- so, too, it may be time for Linux to do the same. Such, indeed, was essentially the point behind a recent open poll at Tux Radar. http://bit.ly/pecfzr

Windows 8 âSecure Bootâ Could Stop You Installing Linux Microsoft are pushing for changes to the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware specifications that would prevent any operating system apart from Windows 8 being able to boot on a computer. The proposal would see all computers sold by manufacturers wishing to gain a âWindows Certifiedâ badge for their devices needing to adhere to the âsecure bootâ protocol â thus locking out the ability to install Linux in the process. âSecure Bootâ works by keeping âsecret keysâ within the system itself. These keys are then used to âsignâ anything that wishes to run â such as operating systems. If an operating system isnât signed by a matching key then booting of it will not be allowed. But itâs not just restrictive to software vendors either as Red Hatâs Matthew Garrett explains: - âA hardware vendor cannot run their hardware inside the EFI environment unless their drivers are signed with a key thatâs included in the system firmware. If you install a new graphics card that either has unsigned drivers, or drivers that are signed with a key thatâs not in your system firmware, youâll get no graphics support in the firmware.â The technology isnât new; most motherboards shipped today support Secure Boot but have it disabled by default. For the roll out of Windows 8 Microsoft want to see Secure Boot enabled  on all devices shipping with their name on by default. Donât Panic â At least not yet First of all, this hasnât happened yet. And Microsoft are likely to face fierce opposition in trying to push this change through â including from the Competition Commission of the EU, who previously forced Microsoft to offer a choice of Web Browsers in the European edition of Windows 7. OEMs would also be able to offer a BIOS feature to disable the service â a literal âoff switchâ for Windows. Ross Anderson of Light Blue Touchpaper, who has campaigned against similar, albeit less restrictive, moves before is stern in his verdict: - âThe extension of Microsoftâs OS monopoly to hardware would be a disaster, with increased lock-in, decreased consumer choice and lack of space to innovate. It is clearly unlawful and must not succeed.â http://bit.ly/q20nEk

GO Ubuntu Unity Launcher Theme for Android is Awesome! You can now experience a very Unity like environment in your Android device using GO Ubuntu Unity theme. GO Ubuntu Unity is basically a theme for GO Launcher EX which is one of the best launchers available for Android. I like this theme, not just because I am a big fan Unity, but because GO Ubuntu Unity theme actually delivers what it promises. You need to download and install GO Launcher EX first of all(if you haven't already). Press HOME button and select GO Launcher EX. Now, download and install GO Ubuntu Unity theme(optionally, you can use the QRCode below to install GO Ubuntu Unity theme) Done. GO Ubuntu Unity theme is all set. Now, goto Menu - Themes and you will see a new entry called Ubuntu Unity(assuming you are already running GO Launcher EX). Done. Hope you like it. As a token of appreciation for the developers behind it, you might want to consider buying the GO Ubuntu Unity Donate version. Both versions of  GO Ubuntu Unity theme have the same set of features, if you are wondering. http://bit.ly/poIyA8

Tomboy Is Simple Note Taking Application That Syncs With Ubuntu One Tomboy is an open source cross-platform note taking application available for Windows, Mac, Linux and Unix. Tomboy provides the option to synchronize notes with Ubuntu One and Snowy, which enables viewing and managing the notes from a mobile device such as an Android or iPhone. Tomboy has a simple interface for quickly creating and managing notes within separate notebooks (which are more like folders for organizing multiple notes, similar to Evernote). Notes can be created either in plain text or with highlighted text, along with the utility of inline spell checking. Moreover, it provides hyperlinking of web links and email addresses, as well as other small but useful options such as font styling, bullet lists, undo/redo and support for note synchronization over SSH, WebDAV, Ubuntu One, or Snowy (web application). To install Tomboy on Windows, you will first require installing GTK# which you can download from the link given at the end of this post. Make sure that you have GTK# installed on your Windows system before installing Tomboy. Once done, you can start creating notes and notebooks from the File menu. When creating a new note, type a title, enter the body text and optionally select a notebook (from Notebook option from the top toolbar). Notes can be searched linked and deleted from the buttons on the top toolbar. The Text option allows stylizing and changing text format (bold, italic, strike out, fixed width, small, normal, large, huge and bullets). As you can see from the below screenshot, separate notebooks can be created to organize your notes for easy sorting. The created notes and entire notebooks can be exported as an HTML file from the Tools menu. The options for Tomboy are quite similar for both Windows and Linux and contain more or less the same configuration options. Tomboy comes pre-installed with newer versions of Ubuntu and can be compiled from the source package for other Linux distributions. To configure accounts or a local directory for synchronizing Tomboy notes, go to Edit â> Preferences. Here you can login to your Ubuntu One account, Snowy web app, WebDAV or a local folder to sync your notes. A synchronization time can also be enabled to sync files after a set time interval e.g. every 10 minutes. Since Ubuntu One account is accessible like a Dropbox account and also has applications for iPhone and Android, therefore, you can easily access your synchronized notes on the go via the internet or smart phone apps. Tomboy works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Mac OSX, Linux and Unix.
