Just in case the challenge still doesn't go down I wanted to at least share it. The challenge was a combination of Don't Forget the Lyrics, Name That Tune, and Jeopardy--each song would be categorized into one of 6 themes from the dystopian literature we've been exposed to. These would have been the songs and categories.

This blog post brings up the issues of overly sheltering children and how this will effect their development into full-fledged adults, along with some breaking of current socially acceptable parenthood.

Are we too sensitive to negative situations? Are they becoming less of life experiences and more of victimizations?

Keeping everyone happy all the time by justifying them at whatever cost necessary sounds a lot like dystopian literature. What they don't know can't hurt them and what they do know better make them feel like "rainbow colored unicorns are running around pooping skittles onto piles of marshmallows."

Romans 13:1-7 NIV Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.   This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

This would be a great discussion point for all of the dystopian literature we have come across but more specifically the Eyes in Handmaid's Tale. They would definitely use this passage as evidence for why their system is Biblically based. This brings several questions to light including: What if the government's interest is not your well-being? At what point do you draw the line between the government's law and God's law?

I just felt the need to make this weak connection to "Star Trek into Darkness" because it brought me joy in the midst  of Chem 100.

I am reading this book for my New Testament class and this passage reminded me of Chapter 5 where skepticism is described as " not a matter of denial, but of inquiring, seeking, questioning doubt" (54, Phil for Dummies) and Chapter 17 which states that stoics believe that "whatever nature brought us without a cure, we could ourselves at some point reject by choosing to end our misery through ending our own lives" (198, Phil for Dummies). Pilate is making a political statement of himself and his nation using these terms that we have, and will, discuss in class.

I never shared my White Elephant gift on social media so here it is! I was quite proud of it. All the cooties to catch are 1984 and Brave New World references.
