RedBull
Although I don't really love the RedBull product because I feel it is very unnatural, I could easily hate it and I don't. I believe RedBull does the BEST job in marketing with the videos and images they put out, the events they organize and athletes they sponsor. I want to be RedBull athlete, and although I probably never will, I want to be connected to the brand and feel part of their team.
GORE-TEX
No other brand in the apparel industry has been able to use a strategy akin to "Intel Inside" as perfectly as Gore-tex. As a manufacturer of high performance fabrics that repel water but retain breathability, when their logo and name are stitched to jackets, shoes or gloves, they immediately provide a stamp of quality and performance.
With this strategy, Gore-Tex has created a brand with value instead of becoming a commoditized supplier. They have moved upmarket and the garments where their fabric is used command a hefty premium. Gore-tex has been able to withstand attacks from garment manufacturers that develop their own waterproof fabrics and also the coming and going of many garment manufacturers.
Gore-tex continually invests in developing their fabric technology and maintains a performance gap with its competitors. They have released their own premium offering of bicycle oriented apparel called Gore Bike Wear and have done an excellent job of penetrating retail channels. They are using their core brand Gore-Tex and its association with high quality and performance to push their bike apparel brand and grow its brand awareness
At $200+ Rapha is probably the most expensive pice of bike kit on the market today. They are the luxury brand that is capable of producing lust from its customers and envy from its competitors. In the video below we can see how they are truly exceptional at producing strong emotions in their customers, giving the brand a distinct personality that is much more than the quality of the product.

THE BIG RED S
Thats how customer's have rebranded Specialized, due to its logo and how its grown to become the largest high-performance bicycle brand in the world.
The evolution of the Specialized brand has been shaped by internal company actions like the lawsuit (and many others) we can see in the picture above, the failed launch of the Force sub-brand for discount retailers and an aggressive expansion of the company footprint worldwide (manufacturing is almost wholly done in Asia).
The external (World 3) image of the company that has been co-created with customers is one where Specialized is seen as a big American Corporation that wants to take over the whole bike market and eliminate its competition.
Although Specialized tries to focus on racing and innovation and eliminate this BIG RED S perception, they fail when they engage in actions that might make sense from a business standpoint but are contradictory to their core values and what customers would like to see in a bike brand.
Canadian Gnar
Canada has the most progressive terrain and riders on earth. They have pioneered riding in very technical terrain and a breed of bicycles adapted to the conditions of Whistler, Vancouver's North Shore, Pemberton emerged. Four brands: Knolly, Banshee, Norco and Rocky Mountain, brand themselves as Canadian with "designed for the Gnar" roots.

THE RISE OF TAIWAN
Giant is currently known as the worlds largest bike manufacturer. In 1977 Schwinn hired them to produce bikes as an OEM, by mid 1980's it produced 2/3 of Schwinn's bikes. In 1987 Schwinn decide to drop them as a source, so Giant came out with their own brand of GIANT bicycles as they are known today.
They know produce over 6.3Million bicycles (many to other "American" brands) and have revenues around 1.8 Billion dollars.
So much for "commoditizing" and "outsourcing"...
Made in USA (Part I)
"In Silicon Valley the Volkswagen bus is legendary. Steve Jobs sold his hippie wheels for $1,300 in 1976 to buy parts for the Apple I.Before Jobs there was Mike Sinyard, a ponytailed graduate of San Jose State. He was suffering an identity crisis. “I didn’t want a business career. White shirts and ties were not for me.”
So in 1974 Sinyard sold his VW bus and bicycled around Europe. In Italy he saw his future: Cinelli bike parts–handlebars and stems that were hard to get in America. Sinyard moved back to the States and began importing Cinelli parts, marking them up 10% to 15%.

When did you start making your own branded Specialized products? “We started with tires in 1976. In 1979 we built our first bike, the Allez. We manufactured the frame in Japan. I fell in love with Japanese precision and quality. That was a real education for me. It has inspired Specialized’s approach to bike building ever since. The Japanese way starts with honor and integrity.”"
