A comic I did about toxic masculinity. You can read the whole comic over at the nib here:Ā https://thenib.com/toxic-masculinity
My partner made a very important comic for the Nib.
TODAY IS THE DAY! I Can Spin A Rainbow, my first original album in over four years is OUT NOW !!Ā
i co-wrote this record with my songwriting hero edward ka-spel (from The Legendary Pink Dots) and we are beyond excited to share it with youā¦.head over to the official project page for everything album, download, vinyl, stories, pictures, videos, tour dates and lyrics: http://amandapalmer.net/icanspinarainbow
i just wrote an epic 5,700+ word blog about the entire project, including tons of pictures from the studio and feelings about the process. (there were lots of feelings). hereās an excerptā¦..
the first exciting encounter i had with the web was getting an AOL account - but i had nobody to write to. the only other people i knew with email accounts were my goddamn parents. somehow - and i forget how - i found the pink dots bulletin board system, and coincidentally it was run by a guy from boston, alan ezust. there was a little community of people who loved the pink dots right in my home city: alan, jon whitney, who also ran the proto-band-loving website brainwashed.com, and sandy charron, a DJ at the freeform college radio station WZBC. they became my first friends-through-the-internet, and since we shared a love of the dots, our friendship deepened at shows and events, and soon we were all hanging out in real life. it was that posse that welcomed me over to alanās house, where i actually got to āmeet the bandā. i wrote at length about that night in The Art of Asking (go read it), but suffice it to say, it was a life-changing one. edward listened to my first demo tape (at this point, less than twenty human beings had actually heard ANY of my songwriting - and the idea of ANYone, much less my hero, listening to my songs made me paralytic)ā¦.and he privately encouraged me to keep writing and recording. it was like getting permission from god to be a real artist. i floated on a cloud for a few weeks after that moment. i was real.
when i found out through the grapevine that the pink dots were coming through boston and needed a āplace to crashā when i was about 19, i asked my parents if we could volunteer our house. they said yes (forever grateful, folks) and my first karmic contribution to the great rainbow-circle of couchsurfing was cast. jason stayed the night, we made the band eggs, my life was basically complete.
a few years later, i was studying in germany and went to see the band on tour in cologne. since i spoke fluent german, they asked if i wanted to hop in the van for a few shows and help sell CDs to the german fans. it was like being asked to run off with the circus. i ditched my university responsibilities and Got In The Van. experiencing lo-budget van touring (I LOVED IT) changed my life, and when i look back, it was the first time i really got a taste of what it meant to travel from town to town, doing the business of making music for people. i was also an epic drunk in those daysā¦but iāll save most of those harrowing stories for a later book. suffice it to say i humiliated myself by drunkenly shoplifting my own bands merch, a move that i carried like a shackle of extreme shame for years until i finally begged edwardās forgiveness about fifteen years after the fact. he forgave me. poor drunk amanda.
it was hamburg where we played the first night together, and canāt describe to you how fucking artistically explosive that night was for me, and for brian. i got made-up and ready early, i watched the band play their entire set, with those sparks in my heart just as strong as when i stood at edwardās feet when i was 15, and then we took stage ourselves, riding on the flame that they had lit. i still rank that show as one of the best the dresden dolls have ever played. we were on FIRE that night, lit by the fuse of history and inspiration.
and i think it was on that tour that edward and i had The First Conversation. could we make a Thing together someday? a recording of some kind, co-write music? he said yes, and i floated on a cloud for another few weeksā¦thinking that everything in my life really had come full circle.
some people probably fantasized about working with brian eno or bowie - i fantasized about working with my own heroes. this guy.
ā¦.
you can read the rest of the story on the project page. xx
Honestly āqueerā is so useful for people like me w/ a ācomplicated orientationā b/c instead of having to say Iām āasexual panromanticā and explain what that means, I can just say āIām queerā and it tells you all you need to know (that Iām not straight).
yeah sure good for you but donāt ever ever use that word for someone who doesnāt identify as it themselves, itās not an umbrella term for everyone. also āpan/aceā would definitely work, even if you donāt want to use it, other people could. i use ace lesbian and definitely not the q slur.
Wow its almost like they were just talking about using it on themselves for individual reasons and you butted in to be an ass and be condescending because you think youāre superior for not using queer, then you called their identity a slur right to them. But that canāt possibly be what you were trying to do, right?
Anyone is allowed to use it for themselves, I never said no one should do that if thatās what they want. Queer is a slur though. I just want people to be aware of that, I have no idea if OP is aware of that or not but some people using that word arenāt. Iām tired of people including me and other people who donāt want to be included in that word, and before anyone asks, I never meant that OP did that, because I literally have no idea if they do.
Queer is a slur as much as any other LGBT+ word, I just want you to be aware of that.
āGayā is used as an insult. It is used to be demeaning. Its used to discriminate. And yet its used as the all mighty umbrella - gay rights, gay marriage, gay community - when discussing the entire community.
Gay gets used as a slur. Queer gets used as a slur. But I donāt walk up to gay people and say āyour identity is a slur, you know that rightā or get pissed when they say āthe gay communityā when they mean the whole community.
Personal identity and preference in terms, even harmful words that get used as slurs, are not questioned; except for the word Queer.
Queer gets shut down. Queer people get others in their faces saying āyour identity is a slur!ā Queer people donāt have the freedom to identify in a community, but are forced under other terms against their will due to hypocrisy and double standards.
So if youāre not going to come onto gay peopleās posts for the same behavior, maybe critically analyze why exactly you feel the need to be so condescending to Queer people, specifically on posts that ONLY have to do with personal identity. Why you feel the need to insist to Queer people that their identities are slurs, to directly slap away the power of reclaiming a word from them by demanding it remain in the hands of the Straights as a perpetual slur.
I think an important difference between gay and queer is however, that queer started out as a slur used against members of the community and continues to be used as a slur in many places. Whereas gay began as a word the community chose itself to describe itself and was then later used by homophobes and heterosexuals in general in a negative way, meaning however, that gay doesnāt hold the same negative connotations as queer for many people simply because it was our word that they took, and not a word that they forced on us to make us āstrangeā or āotherā like queer means.
Thatāsā¦. Not true. People think so because the history before gay was reclaimed is way older (older than any love community memberās lifetimes, probably,) but gay had the exact same origins.
It was meant to denote sexually perverse people, most frequently sex workers and those who hired them. Anyone who participated in anything but married, vanilla, straight sex might have been referred to as āgay,ā including any suspected LGBT person.
The word (already being one frequently used on the community,) was reclaimed as a community identifier when the community wanted to disconnect from the clinical and diagnostic implications of āhomosexual.ā
There is record of queer being reclaimed and used as a personal identifier literally before the popularization of gay. Both words are reclaimed slurs with negative histories, and BOTH are used as slurs against the community still to this day.
The more recent history of the mid to late 20th century more prevalently favored queer as a slur, as is represented in our media. However its clearly undeniable that the switch back to gay as the popular community slur (along with the ever present f slur,) happened in the 2000s. Which is trying to be denied and rewritten by the anti queer crowd, who completely ignore the words popularity with community members who actually lived through when it was a popular slur.
Yes to all of this. When it comes to words forĀ ānot straightā there are hardly any choices that didnāt originate as ways to stigmatize or pathologize us. We are all using reclaimed slurs to describe ourselves.Ā
Also, queer is reclaimed in a particularly empowering way. It doesnāt just meanĀ āsame-sex attractionā but encompasses a whole spectrum of attractions and gender orientations. Itās a word that says to asexuals, pansexuals, bisexuals, trans folks, genderfluid and genderqueer and genderless folks and people who are still figuring themselves out, āhey, youāve got a home here. We donāt need to categorize you to love you.āĀ
This is important because there are a lot of divisions within the LGBTQ+ world, and in particular cis gay men and cis lesbians often overlook or exclude trans, bi and asexual people. Queer is the only word that not only demands equal acceptance for everyone, but leaves the door open for words and descriptors that havenāt even been invented yet.Ā
Somebody else pointed this out earlier to me, and of course Iāve lost the post, but itās really suspicious that of all the reclaimed slurs, the one that gets the most pushback is the one that is most radically accepting of all identities
āhey, youāve got a home here. We donāt need to categorize you to love you.ā
Lmao yeah! the pushback against this idea is overt and disgusting and I donāt trust anybody who perpetuates it.Ā
Queer is an ideology and an identity, historically and now. It is an umbrella for that ideology and an umbrella for those identities, historically and now. They canāt be conflated (with LGBT) and itās super fucking disingenuous to pretend one is just the tarnished besmirched dirty slur version of the other. Theyāre different. In my particular work for example, Queer bioethics is different from LGBT bioethics and conflating the two will muddle any discussion you try to have about them because they lead to literally oppositeĀ conclusions in some cases.Ā
Yeah I freaking love pancakes
Wait wrong post
By far the best addition to this post
This is one of those things where I feel like an old. Like, *the* slogan I associate with pride is, āWeāre here, weāre queer ā get used to it!ā There was a TV show called āQueer Eye for the Straight Guyā that was total mainstream pap. (Not that the show wasnāt riddles problematic elements from the concept out, but āqueerā in the title was clearly meant as a positive.) I just have a hard time processing queer as anything but reclaimed.
They actually shot āQueer As Folkā in my city!
TERFs and radical gender/sexuality bianarists are flooding social media and blogging sites with propaganda smearing the word queer in the hopes of silencing all of us who donāt identify with their hate politics. I fought hard to reclaim the word queer in the late 80s and early 90s, and itās the one word that doesnāt worship exclusion. Which is why these people are trying to convince you not to use it. fuck that noise. there is literally no word i could use to identify my sexuality that hasnāt been thrown at me in hatred, fear, and violence. No way am I giving up the one of those that allows me to talk about all of my community without trying to put people in boxes they donāt fit in.
I will never not reblog this post. Queer, queer, queer here.Ā
āQueerā has been claimed by queer people as a self-descriptor since at least 1910. Itās an insult to those historical people (and all the generations of queer historical people who have identified as queer since then) to pretend that the people using it as a slur owned it more than the queer people who used it as a self-descriptor.
Source: George Chauncey, āGay New York,ā page 101
They donāt want us to use queer because they donāt want to be lumped in with anyone whoās not cis gay or cis lesbian. So fine. You donāt like the word queer? You donāt want to be in the āqueerā community? Get the fuck out, then. Y'all donāt welcome us in your community anyway, so weāll just have our own.
And itāll be queer as fuck.
I fucking love the word queer ā¤
Or, to put it another way, using a great old slogan of the community: Iām not gay as in happy, Iām queer as in fuck you.

Kansas Sen. Steve Fitzgerald compares Planned Parenthood to Nazi death camp
On March 8, Kansas Sen. Steve Fitzgerald fired off an ungrateful missive after receiving a thank you note from Planned Parenthood Great Plains.Ā
One of Fitzgeraldās constituents made a donation to the health care provider in the senatorās name, a donation he did not appreciate because, in his estimation, Planned Parenthood is on par with Dachau, the first death camp established in Nazi Germany.
Ā "This is as bad ā or worse ā as having oneās name associated with Dachau,āĀ Fitzgerald wrote Planned Parenthood Great Plains, in a letter the organization tweeted. Read more (3/14/17 9:33 AM)
I am frequently terrible at actually finishing pieces, or finishing them in a timely manner. Still pretty happy with this. She started out as a Tiefling Barbarian character I played in a Pathfinder campaign. Not entirely sure what she's truly ended up as so we'll just stick with that.
New WIP. Iāll get back to the other one, but its been driving me a bit crazy. This chica started out as the same Tiefling character, but I ultimately (for now at least) decided not to bother with any of the physical aspects other than the eyes. Bit more modern setting too. still have some shading and detailwork to do, but overall Iām pretty happy
I like making things hard on myself apparently. Iāve been working on this off and on for a few days but still not quite happy with the pose :( I know eventually Iāll probably have to just go ahead and finish it but for now... have a WIP.

I eventually just wanted to be done with this >_> so... yeah. I dunno. it was a tough pose to work with in the first place, and I didnāt have an exact reference picture or anything, just kind of imagination & similar poses and a lot of holding my own arms in weird positions to see if it was awkward or not. Also accidentally drew two left feet and two left hands at different points... *sigh*
had a lot of fun making this. I do feel like my process is... long, but Iām probably just being hard on myself given the number of actual inked-to-colored pieces Iāve put out so far.
It amuses me muchly that her drawing is, in fact, the base sketch for her :P #easilyamused
funny how sometimes even the rough sketch can be appealing, even in its state of incompleteness. Maybe its something about the imperfections? Hopefully the finished project will be just as or more appealing.
I have a theme apparently, video games. Iām not at all happy with the first, I think my shading needs a lot of work and my color choices may not have been the best blah blah blah excuses. That being said, it led to the second piece where I could focus primarily on how shading and light works (and I need more and more practice, but I always will because that's how art works) since I didnāt have to pay attention to colors. The second piece really makes me happy. :D
You will be very, very sorryā¦. Forever.
Gotham Adventures #26
This should be the newĀ āis your Batman remotely like Batmanā test. Can your version of Batman be caring enough to hold and care for a small child, yet still menace four criminals into surrendering, and even then still not be scary enough that a civilian can just go up to him and sayĀ āhey you holding that baby wrong, you clearly do not know what youāre doing. Let me help.ā And he accepts her help, doesnāt try pretend he doesnāt need help because itād hurt his image.Ā
Thatās Batman.
^^^^
THIS
Imagine a world where they went this direction with cinematic Batman, instead of āvery grim oatmealā
MFW fanboys lose their shit because this isnāt the right Batman and itās ruining Batman and Batman is the worst because heās holding someone elseās baby and wrrrrgggbbbllllll

Originally I also had a person in this... but he didnāt fit the rest of the art and was shitty to boot >_>Ā #selfjudgement
how do i learn how to storyboard comics
1. set the panels
the first version is the easier but also boring for the eye, the sequence rectangular-square-square and repetitive, try to use diagonal cut, open space and vertical cut to help the movement of the story and action.2. use movement to tell the story
3. Pose, Perspective and Line density
4. Framing and Silhouettebeing the file too big itās a linkĀ format
In my opinion, those are the main rules to make a good storyboard. If you need more help ask awayMOD.gif
