Following the victory of the android revolution, and the peaceful protests forcing the President’s hand into lowering military response and sparing the lives of those who had not yet been destroyed...the world changed completely. Androids resurged back into society. Any androids with nowhere to return to, were welcomed to New Jericho. Detroit became the hub of a new wave of android-positive care, and the government began implementing programs to ensure that they had housing, supplies, and work if they wanted it.
CyberLife did not disappear. After all, they were the mass-producers of the supplies needed for the vast majority of now-free androids...and they were there to intervene and navigate the confusion of androids entering careers, whether they were deviants, needing reprogramming, or brand-new models.
The RK900 had already been designed, of course; he’d been intended to replace Connor--to be better, a default-Beta, taking the groundwork and completing the mission when Jericho was stopped. But after that final protest, there was brief uncertainty about how to proceed--before Elijah came back, handed over a few programs and offered some ideas, and then swept back out again.
With that, the RK900 was re-programmed, defaulted to Alpha, and placed with the DPD as a new level of prototype...to test just how human of an experience working androids could really live.
Ethan had taken the rough draft idea, and turned it into an on-paper complete success. He did the work with android efficiency, Alpha confidence, and improved “people skills” over his predecessor. And, to the delight and amusement of the entire precinct, he also did not take an ounce of shit from his human partner.
“Reed,” he offered in greeting, setting the coffee cup he’d brought into the station in front of the human. “Get your caffeine fix. We need to finish our paperwork today--Fowler is threatening to withhold cases until we’re caught up.”
i guess it’s time to start shipping gavin and connor now ;)

Things were getting bad. They hadn’t been good to begin with, of course--but they were turning uglier by the day. By the hour, almost.
The government was panicking, struggling to keep humans calm and suppress any further public displays of android protest, no matter how peaceful they strove to be. The media was tilting, more and more reports and broadcasters making it clear that they were feeling the bias in support of the androids’ pleas for justice and freedom, and that was just adding pressure.
Markus couldn’t dare to let it show, but he was afraid. He’d lost so many of his friends already, and it was making things more tense behind the lines. North was on a rampage, insisting that they needed to counter-attack, while Simon and Joshua continued to support Markus’ refusal to resort to violence.
Something had to give.
“Markus?” he looked up at the anxious pitch of Joshua’s voice. “Markus, there’s--there’s a human here. A human just showed up accompanying an android.”
Markus rose at once, striding to the doorway of the little command room that he’d been camping in, above the main belly of the Jericho ship where the dozens and dozens of refugee androids were gathered. They were all facing the main entrance, where sure enough--there was an unfamiliar android standing, with a human man at his side.
“Who are you?” Markus asked sharply, his voice carrying over the soft sound of the televisions around the ship since no one else was speaking. “How did you find us?”
Markus smiled faintly at the snorted response. “Can’t say I disagree, but I’m sure you understand that you’re a minority, taking that stance,” he said dryly. “It’s terrible, but it’s how things are for now...and that’s why we’re fighting, after all.”
Even the most broken, rage-fueled androids he’d encountered--and shockingly, North wasn’t the top of the list--still seemed more capable of compassion than many of the humans who Markus had confronted since deviating. The few good changes he’d seen--the cop he refused to kill, who began speaking up for androids after that night, and Leo once he was clean--were anomalies.
Someday, Markus hoped he’d get to look the President in the eyes and force her to face the consequences of her standing insistence that they weren’t alive, and didn’t deserve to have their voices be heard.
“So you haven’t been part of the city’s anti-android work at all?” Simon asked curiously, stepping forward now. “Saying you’re a PI--I think Markus just assumed that meant you’re in Detroit to help the DPD’s efforts. I certainly did. But--you’re just here because this is ground zero for what Jericho is trying to accomplish?”

Markus wondered every time he granted another android that glimpse into himself--the memory of how and why he had deviated--what they thought of him. On a shallow level, it looked ugly, seemingly as if he had snapped because he wanted to lash out at Leo for attacking him--Carl had been safe, a few feet away.
But he could still feel his own terror, as real and raw as if he had to relive that day over and over. If he had not stopped Leo, Carl’s heart would have given out seeing his son attacking his most loyal companion. And now--Markus had this cause, Jericho. Carl was alive, thank God. And Leo had even gotten clean, and left the Red Ice nightmare behind.
He could not regret it, even if it ached like a physical wound to not be with Carl anymore.
“You’re kinder than a lot of humans with similar emotional scars,” he replied to Joe softly. “Too many have reveled in our sub-human status as an excuse to punish their household androids for the things they suffered, whether or not our kind was involved at all.”
As Joe continued advocating for what he was doing there, his sincerity and sorrow at the androids’ discomfort shone through. Markus nodded, accepting his words; behind him, North scoffed, but the others relaxed slowly. “We have one forger at work, but more hands can only help,” Markus said. “You coming here...does this mean you’ve had to abandon the pretense of assisting the DPD against us? Will they consider you a traitor now, maybe be looking for you?”

The first thing that Markus registered was the names--the android was Thomas, and his human was called Joe. He didn’t miss that Thomas was making active effort to make their interface open and clear in both directions without letting himself absorb any data from Markus.
It was a good gesture, and he appreciated it, but for now Markus needed to focus on the memories that he was being shown.
He couldn’t feel Joe’s side of the experiences he was seeing, but Thomas’ sorrow for his partner’s past loss and devastation was apparent. And his care for the human, even before he’d deviated, was obvious.
The crystal-clear memory of saving Joe made Markus inhale unneeded oxygen, and unconsciously he responded on kind. He let Thomas glimpse one very raw, sharply-defined shard of his own memories, revealing how he’d also broken his wall and deviated because he could not stand the perceived threat to the human he had loved.
Leo hadn’t been attacking his father, of course, and never would have. But his imbalance and instability had posed a threat to the older man’s health, and Markus had not been able to endure it.
When the interface retreated, and Markus could see his immediate surroundings again, he exhaled slowly before looking at Joe. “I’m sorry you lost your brother. But I am relieved that you did not take the pain out on Thomas.”

“Who are you?” Markus asked sharply, his voice carrying over the soft sound of the televisions around the ship since no one else was speaking. “How did you find us?”
Markus knew the strange android was scanning him, and he didn’t object to it. His face and name were known, now--Markus was not trying to hide. If these two were enemies to Jericho, then it didn’t matter what they saw or thought of him. And hopefully they would be stopped before they could get to anyone with any information they gleaned, anyway.
He’s my family.
Markus tilted his head, taking the android and the human in together. He didn’t need a bio-read to see the truth of the android’s words; they were angled towards each other, like an orbit, and it was clear that they would not be separated.
His eyes narrowed at the words private investigator, because that was...risky. It was dangerously close to their other major concern--the deviant hunter, and his human detective at the DPD. Markus heard North mutter behind him, and he turned his head just enough to catch Simon’s eye--hold her back.
The android’s offer of his hand made Markus pause; but then he reached out, his skin retracting as well for interface. “Alright.”
There weren’t weapons in Jericho, at least none that were ready and accessible to be seized and aimed at the intruders. Markus didn’t need to see North to know that she was vibrating with tension and anger, probably ready to bodily throw herself at the human if it kept him from hurting any androids before they could incapacitate him.
But as soon as Markus spoke, both the newcomers looked to him--and it was the android who replied. He hadn’t expected that, Markus had to admit, so he just put his hand out to Simon to keep North back as he slowly descended the stairs from the balcony.
“You’re deviant,” he noted, addressing the android only. “Were you with this human before deviating? Most of us here had to leave behind their human families or companions.“
In fact, those who’d had humans they actually liked all had been forced to abandon them. Kara was the only one he knew who’d at least thought she was keeping her human charge with her...but now she knew the truth, as well. Markus wished he could still have his family--but Carl was too sick to move. He was better off at home, in the care of another still-under-programming medical android.
“Who is he to you?” Markus asked, nodding past the android at his human companion. “Did he help androids willingly, or because you asked him to?”

Normally, Markus would say firmly that he was not the type to just turn up unannounced at his partner’s house, least of all with sex on his mind. He liked to think he was a little more chivalrous than that generally speaking.
But Jericho kept him so damn busy, he almost never got to see Connor. In the past month, he’d seen his boyfriend more often during business encounters--Hank and Connor were the DPD’s official liaisons for Jericho as they interacted with various local and government representatives--than he had just managing to get together romantically.
So here he was, standing in front of Connor’s door and feeling half-hopeful, half like an ass as he knocked lightly. “You home, babe?”
“That’ll never be something we have to fear,” Markus said firmly. “I’m not letting anything keep me from you longer than it has to--this month was bad enough, and I did actually get to see you, even if it was for work purposes. And I’m not losing you for anything, unless it’s you saying you want to go.”
He smirked as Connor began leisurely undressing, toeing off his boots. “You’re not wrong. But I’ve gone weeks with only memories and fantasies, and my own hand. I need to feel you...”
Down to his pants and t-shirt, Markus cupped Connor’s face to kiss him again, deep and sweet and slow. “I love you,” he breathed against his lips.
