This is the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time.

Man, lately I’m on Tumblr for like five minutes a week but even in those five minutes I’m still a sucker for memes. (In addition to my ongoing familiarity with The Good Wife, The Fosters, OITNB and a bunch of other random shit, I have been watching Jane the Virgin lately! Only up to episode 2x09 though)

It does get dark but it’s SO WELL DONE. Essential fic for anyone who cares about a.) Leela’s journey to becoming Kalinda and b.) how Leela wound up with Nick.

Oh, excellent! Thank you! I doubt I'd ever have found it again on my own and it's very much my image of Leela, which could be important to have around if I ever write fic again. *favorites*

SUCH A GOOD FIC EVERYONE GO READ

Doesn’t a lot of it depend on where you live and what the community is like there?  There’s a tremendous amount of pressure here in the Islamophobic US *not* to wear the hijab (granted there may also be pressure to wear it for some women), and I’ve read lots of essays by women who wear the hijab by choice, even though in some places it makes their lives more difficult.  I think all religions can either be coercive and oppressive or freely chosen and meaningful; it depends on who's teaching it to you or else inflicting it on you. I'm not sure there's any way to know, just by looking at someone wearing a hijab, what it means to them.  I’m sorry that the OP has had such a bad experience with it.  No one should go through that. 

Also I have been a little bit ambivalent on the “End” slap, mostly because a) it’s drawing a parallel to Peter’s S1 behavior that I don’t think is entirely merited and b) half the fandom confessions now seem to be about “she deserved it, what a bitch” and unh-unh-unh.  But just having read about the writers’ two other thoughts for who might slap Alicia in “End,” with number one being Jackie and number two being GRACE, I am just so so so grateful that they wound up writing it the way they did.  A slap from Jackie would have had almost no resonance because she’s self-centered and spiteful and so it would have been about her and not Alicia, and a slap from Grace would have broken my fucking heart into a million pieces.  Like, I’m cringing away from just the thought. So maybe the Kings haven’t done much for me in the last couple of years, but at least they didn’t end the series with Grace slapping Alicia.  Thank you for that, Kings.  

where did you read this? The other ideas for the slap I mean….

WHAT I’VE BEEN SAYING Like even if they are REALLY REALLY COMMITTED to this idea that Kalinda "made a choice" to leave and they are "respecting" the character by honoring that choice -- which, it's not like she left because she wanted to, she left because she was afraid she was going to get killed if she stayed, so I'm not sure where "choice" even comes into it? You could seriously get her back on the show with two lines of "Well now that Bishop and Dex are both in jail and Lester died of a heart attack, Bishop's organization is in disarray and no one's paying attention to me" -- if they can do flashback/fantasy scenes with Will they can do them with Kalinda. Alicia is trying to navigate a lot of life changes and challenges in the finale, and Kalinda always helped her do that in the early days (and in the days right before the ban came down).  She was important.  But the show wants us to forget that, because the actresses can't work together and it's all so much easier if we just forget there was ever anything that mattered between the two characters.  Fuck that noise. 

Why is it that I liked the slap but loathe this confession?

Is it because the confession reads like hatred of Alicia rather a commentary on the slap or its place in the narrative?

Yeah, I think that’s most of it. It shifts the discussion from “this parallels the S1 slap in these ways and highlights x y and z things about Alicia’s character development” to “I hate Alicia, bitch had it coming.” Something about it also had an ugly misogynist tinge to my ear -- the “pimp slap” part revels in the force of the blow, and the “smug face” part mischaracterizes Alicia in that moment IMO and therefore implies a general hatred of the character, one that makes the person relish Alicia’s being physically assaulted. I like the victim-to-victimizer narrative moderately well, and I think the slap points that up in an interesting way, but that’s different from feeling like she deserves to be hit, or enjoying her pain.
