thanks for the ask ā” a lot has happened lately but i hope i can get back on the request grind again! fair warning, my answers get lengthy under the cut. iām chatty and sentimental.
4: total number of words you wrote this year
citowon words: 35,221
total words (approx): 96,971
the fun thing about this is that i wrote a LOT of fic this year. i always do, but 2021 was probably my best writing year ever, and at the beginning of 2021 i didnāt expect this much success at all! not all of it is published on citowon nor ao3, but thereās a bunch of little scenes iām very happy about and want to continue into 2022.
13: favorite writing song/artist/album of the year
iām a HUGE music lover and iāll listen to any genre, so i switch it up all the time based on whatever my vibe is, not the text. i made some playlists for a few characters and fics, but i have to give the reward to limbo by royal blood, but for a pretty unexpected reason. see, sometimes iāll loop a song if i really like it, but i usually canāt go more than 45 minutes before i have to skip. iāve listened to limbo for over 2 hours at a time. my record was 4 hours and 40-something minutes one all-nighter over my us history exam! the album itās off of, typhoons, is one of my top 5 releases this year and also has gotten me through so many writing slogs. none of the songs have gotten old, and trust me, if they could be, iād know by now considering how many times i set the full album stream on loop.
despite that, it feels wrong not to mention the tower (theme from the work) by rivers of nihil. i havenāt made a list, but i feel confident that the work is my no. 1 favorite 2021 release, and this song is one that inspired so much content iād like to get out soon. itās beautiful and harrowing, and i think a lot about some character dynamics by running them through the song, you know?
14: a fic you didnāt expect to write
this one is strange and also really fun to answer, because thereās so much i didnāt imagine myself doing! i made a #fic-ideas channel in my private discord server, which includes so many stupid jokes, sleepy text, and just straight-up wild concepts.
in november 2020, i wrote a very simple scene-or-two-plus-a-bad-summary chikaita doc about chikageās past catching up with him, and itaru getting kidnapped because of it. the original was... really garbage. i reopened it in august, tried to figure out what the fuck was going on for about thirty minutes before the concept came back to me, and then wrote another few paragraphs, and forgot about it again. october, i made some ocs, and it light a fire under my ass to keep getting the words out. itās now one of the docs iām most passionate about continuing, and- iām usually a fluff writer, but i feel like this one specifically is very grounding since i apply a lot of real-world logic to it (be honest: if you just got kidnapped because your boyfriend kept his espionage double life a secret from you and you had the self-preservation itaru does, would you stay with him?) and itās a very welcome return to angst, which is what i did before i joined the a3 fandom.
in a more sobering example than that i also impulsively wrote a vent fic, kazunari opens like four cabinets, a few days after a pretty rough patch with some loved ones (content warning for suicide attempts/idealization and underage drinking), and out of respect iām not elaborating any more than what the fic itself says. i remember the night i wrote that fic, it was the one day where i had a super chill online class and that was it, so once that ended i was just alone with my thoughts, and barely keeping myself together, so i just had to write something and get the thoughts out of the way. i felt just disgusted with my everything afterwards- you know, writing fanfiction, what i was going through, how nasty my thoughts were, just depressed things- but then the next day i reread it, and then again, and then again, and it was so cathartic that i couldnāt help but love it. didnāt even edit it properly before i posted it. itās strange in a way, because itās one of my favorite pieces all year now. i like to think of it as a character study, just as much as it is a vent piece. you see, iām a theatre kid, and when iām writing, i envision everything like itās being acted out. the number-one rule with every single theatre teacher i had is to never just cry on stage. you have to do something with it. you canāt wallow, or else the scene withers, melts together and becomes a slogfest. my last high-school production was a very real, very harrowing drama, but it was so easy to forget because the playwright did such a good job balancing out the weight of the plot with so many jokes. thatās what i tried to do with this fic. after all, even in the worst of times i try to be as witty as i can be! iāve read this fic over and over so many times, and i could tell you exactly how taichi and kazunari speak every line in it. they never really get caught up in just sadness, thereās always something that they push in front of it so it has substance, like theyāre not allowed to be just sad. and there's a lot of little things in the fic, too, that represent something going on there. i won't go so far to say it was all fully planned, but there's so many eensy things i love about it. the blueberries, the way kazu responds to taichi telling his story, how they trade the bottle and the glass, "the worst partā, the unwritten actions made, the pacing. kazu has so many lines here that i love, but "they get the best of me sometimes but iām better than i was in high schoolā has to be one of my favorite lines ever.
i feel like itās such a cop-out not even to reference a citowon fic. thereās so many things i love that yāallāve requested! iāll never shut up about how thankful i am for yāall.
my last pick is one thatās a contender for my favorite citowon of the year, masumi and a reader thatās siblings with izumi. iām super proud of how i wrote him here! obviously, i get his whole obsessive almost-yandere thing is his charm, but iāve always taken it as him being that one arrested development clip like
masumi: i have feelings for you
narrator: the feeling was friendship, but he had never felt it before
so writing him actually falling in love with someone- and then having that family resemblance to compare his feelings with- was an opportunity i ate up, and i really couldnāt have expected if it werenāt for someone requesting it, since i wasnāt too interested in masumi before i got this request. i feel like this fic was just as much of a character study as it was an x reader, and a really interesting dive into how his brain works. writing this fic actually shot masumi up a few places in my book, and ever since iāve been having so many thoughts about him, which is one of the reasons why iām so impressed with this fic. on another note, iām really fond of how tsuzuru and citron advise masumi. i grew up learning that every story has a moral if you squint, and iām a believer that you believe the things you consume. tsuzuruās little scene about how what will be will be especially hits imo, itās something i take very seriously, while i think of citronās bit about not rushing as something i wish i knew in the past. masumiās a chaser, but only that fervently when it comes to izumi. so when he has this moment of reconsideration now that he might not be so into izumi, i think of tsuzuru and citron being a really needed reality check, and really puts his (real and deep!) feelings for reader into perspective compared to his izumi obsession. even with my requests, i only write things that i want to write, and this fic is one that i pick up all the time as a bedtime story of sorts. iām super thankful for the ask on this one, on a meta level itās not only a fic that i love, but also one that really helped me realize where my writing skills stand and what iām capable of š

He placed down his pen and script, and hovered his hands slightly over the platter as you uncovered the clear lid. Inside was a perfect ring of cocktail shrimp, all turned clockwise around quarters of a lemon on a leafy garnish.Ā
He let out a lovesick sigh. Whether it referred to you or the shrimp, you werenāt sure. āOh, Reader. Youāre so kind.ā
You bit the inside of your cheek. āItās nothing. Hey, Iāll get these for you.ā
Citron pouted. āI know how to peel shrimp.ā
But he still watched you pick at the shell, though. Your nails dug underneath and split the shell, and as you guided it to his lips they parted and bit into the flesh. Then you took a shrimp of your own and ate it as you watched Citron do the tiniest of wiggles. A happy dance?
Regardless, you donāt think youāve ever seen someone so innocently excited to eat. The corner of his mouth curved up while his blond eyelashes gently fluttered closed, the very picture of joy. You werenāt even sure if he noticed how much his face lightened up at shrimp.Ā
You pushed the lemons out of the way to clear a space for the shells, and gave Citron three more before he held your wrist.Ā
āWeāll share,ā he said, and guided your hand to your own mouth, only letting go before you bit into the sweet flesh. It was soft, but the flavor was clean and crisp, and you were starting to understand why Citron always ate with a smile. You didnāt have the heart to tell him you already snuck one while his eyes were closed.Ā
Citron underlined a stage direction and tucked his pen behind his ear as he slid the script into your vision. āIād like you to hear me out, please.ā
You leaned against his body and squinted, still with a half-unpeeled shrimp in your hands. During the memorization process, heād always ask you to look over the notes heād written in the margins of his script without fail. They were far more meticulous than a past you wouldāve expected, and mostly in a foreign script, but youāve slowly been picking up the language. You could detect common Zafran grammar and basic stage directions, and the translation for ādiaphragmatic-ā something you wouldnāt have known if it werenāt for the one time he taught you how breathing affects voice projection. When the notes were in Japanese, they would be written over in a handwritten bold and underlined at least four times, and above especially long words you could see Zafran letters with large spaces between one another, like sounding out a word.Ā
Where the pen last pressed into the softened paper, Japanese characters asked you a question with arrows pointing at a string of dialogue uninterrupted by directions. His latest role was a two-in-one, a plain young man that secretly lived as a popular VTuber diva online. The VTuber, Ritsu, was gorgeous and graceful, from the words she spoke and the way she walked, and the man behind the screen was, wellā¦
āRitsuroās kind of average, right?ā You asked as you read back to his dialogue, highlighted in light acid yellow. āHeās has a life, but heās just some guy.ā
Citron nodded, and placed a shell into the pile. āSo I thought I would slouch a pit, but his second life is all about Ritsu.ā
āBit, not pit.ā
āThank you. Ritsu is-ā He waved a hand in the air. āEthereal. Very elegant.ā
You didnāt understand how he knew āetherealā but not ābitā. You didnāt bring it up. āShe does have a really composed aura.ā
āAnd really important. So maybe her counterpart also acts like he is all that and a bag of rips.ā

āYes, that!ā

He pondered this for a moment, before placing his head upon yours and holding you close. āMy dear Reader is so smart.ā
You put on your best neutral face and tried to ignore how you glowed at the praise. āItās just a thought.ā
āA good thought, then.ā
āWant me to look over the rest of your notes?ā
He brushed a lock of your hair aside. āI would love nothing more.ā
You flipped the page as he toyed with your hair, and read aloud the important-looking lines according to the directions he penned in along the margins. Citron would react to them quickly, reconsidering the delivery or nodding at the emotion, before repeating the line back to you, and waited for your opinion.Ā
His Ritsu voice, you realized during scene 4, was annoyingly cute. He pulled off a convincing voice when he lowered the volume but raised the pitch. As an audience member, you made sure to advise him to improve his volume so the audience could hear, but as his partner, you secretly pretended to misunderstand his lines just so he would repeat them to you again in a voice that made your heart pound.
Oh, and, after an especially big breakthrough, heād pepper you with kisses.
āReader, my beloved, youāre so clever!ā He took your head in his hands and pressed his lips to your forehead. āYou understand me.ā
You squirmed and playfully made a face. āShrimp breath!ā
He gave you the smallest of apologies in-between pecking your jawline and neck. āSor-ry.ā
āGah, that tickles!ā
āWhat? I canāt hear you!ā
He nipped at a sensitive spot. You howled with laughter, and in turn he laughed as well, a sweet round sound that made you smile long after his tickle attack ended.

tenma: ya heās still a movie star. he also knows how to sing and dance because he was the dude from japanese high school musical idk i never saw hsm. anyways the point is he was actually japanese pt barnum from japanese the greatest showman and ever since japanese into the woods debuted with him as [male lead idk iāve only seen a few scenes from that i donāt think i liked it much] his fans have been begging him to do more music stuff and he said Fine and is the leader of summer sun and for as much as i dunk on him his popularity really does help out mankai records a lot so good for him ig

muku: hehe heās the youngestā¦ summer sun is easily the most theatrical band or at least the one with the most acting, you know, since all their stage idol personas are basically their core personality over the top. he wants to be a heartthrob idol prince like his favorite shoujo leads and his persona is largely inspired by that, but whenever he gets a chance to be cool and suave he gets flustered but that has his own charm tooā¦ also a really good dancerā¦ sonboyā¦
misumi: misumi is so all over the place itās hilarious. on game shows and offstage heās just living his best misumi life but then he slips into his idol persona and heās SO MYSTERIOUS? SO COOL? heās the closest thing summer sun has to a bad boy but heās still so happy to be here and itās so clear that he has love in him waaa. his style is always changing, his persona is never consistent and thatās one of the reasons why he has so many fans. heās the designated rapper! he raps! he loves that kinda migos flow when rapping and he calls his style Triangle Beats but tsuzuruās like āyou know theyāre actually called tripletsā but misumi says No Theyāre Triangle Beats and everyone else on the label also calls them triangle beats instead of triplets

kazunari: pansexual king skinny legend a lot of why i love kazuun is because of his actions during the plot rather than his backstory and gimmick, you feel? heās such an emotional support for everyone even when they donāt realize it and heās kind of the heart of summer sun if you really squint. he keeps the graphic design thing up, and heās kind of a jack-of-all-trades that doesnāt do a lot of major parts by himself, but sings with others to fill chords, does adlibs, etc
kumon: funny rapper boyā¦ funny rapper boyā¦ patting his head so hard rn

i know god isnāt supposed to pick favorites but if He wonāt i will. over the years the fall has the most diversity with subgenres, they start off grunge punk and hardcore and as they continue they dabble into hard rock, nu metal, they get a little fucky wucky and have a bluegrass influence for a secā¦ if i had to describe their sound at first iām saying minor threat
banri: lead vocalist. iām gonna speak to you not as a tumblr x reader blog admin, but as a person. i want you to go on youtube dot com. i want you to look up pyrrhic victory by citizen. you might recognize that band name but i promise this is a different vibe i think idk i donāt listen to pop punk. anyways youāre gonna listen to that. that is literally banri settsu. that is literally what he sounds like i swear, screams and clean vocals and all and the worst part is that he barely even sang before he auditioned i hate him this is the most accurate voice claim in the au.
juza: bassist and backup vocalist. yeah. heās fun because he does entirely hardcore vocals. yeah he can sing too but you listen to his gutturals and then youāll get why he sticks to āem, theyāre monster. the fallās members have the most diverse music taste but this guy always listens to super savage metal, you know, crowbar, nails, high on fire, he named the band after a gojira song š„ŗ his bass playing is also fun because heās not quite strictly lead nor is he strictly rhythm. a lot of the fallās discography has these fun wacky cool bass lines in there and he always wants to improve iām going to sob i love band au!juza so dearly i could cry so hard rn
taichi: TAICHI OMG!!! i love taichi here actually?? heās a keyboardist which is a strange instrument for a punk band but it makes sense because he [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS] and he originally played because he [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS] which is why he [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS BUT ITS THE ONE WEāRE ALL EXPECTING] and then he also [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS]. he also knows how to play the accordion which comes in clutch when [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS]
omi: i have such a soft sport for band au!omi because he was really the first concept i made for this au and i have such strong feelings about his relationship to music and how it connects with mankai, his past, the worldbuilding, etc. heās a drummer and OH MY GOD his bass drum game. immaculate. dude has calves for days and he knows how to use them. one time for a super hot outdoor festival he took his shirt off halfway through the set because so you know how much of a workout drumming is and the crowd roared bc how do you not and omi was totally lost and thought banri did a cool frontman thing but everyone in the fall thought he was just gloating and never explained it to him and he was so confused and forgot about it until six months later when he was making pudding and then it just randomly clicked. also, omi listens to george strait.
sakyo: ohh sakyo is another character that just makes my brain go zzssshzhzhshhwwwoooowowouu *space travel noises* because how do you not itās sakyo thereās SO MUCH material for him! heās a guitarist! he gave up on his dream of being in a band years ago but the revival of mankai records makes him play for keeps and WAAAA. and then you think about how we never really meet the other members of the og troupes (artists in this case) and that means i have full creative freedom and that makes my brain go ZHZHSHSSSOOOOOHOHOHOHOWW

donāt ask me about their genre. trying to figure out their subgenre was one of the biggest production snags writing out this outline. they do rock. i can tell you that. smiths and sting and dead brothers, theyāre very dead brothers. rock, but in the way that dust in the wind is rock and also folk but in the way that hotel california is folk (not at all). and then album 2 (masterās mesmerized by mystery) drops and then they have the AUDACITY to be prog. fuck these guys specifically.
tsumugi: but i donāt MEAN IT when i say fuck these guys i think winter has some of my favorite characters and dynamics and i think of them so dearly and so tenderly. tsumugi is a vocalist and a guitarist, rhythm, and doesnāt really sing often but- fuck- god- fuck fudkx you gsuys i had a voice claim for him but i forgoOT WAIT NO NO J GOT IT I GOT IT FLEET FOXES. THE SHRINE/THE ARGUMENT. GO LISTEN TO THAT. TGATS TSUMUGI. THATS HIM RIGHT THERE IFFICER.
tasuku: i know i say it a lot but i think tasuku might be my favorite band au character. iām so set on it. he used to be a [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS] and then he joined these freezing lakes and now heās a lead vocalist! not a leader but he does vocals and is a hell of a frontman in the way that heās so charismatic without trying you just naturally want to get wrapped up in the songs, ya kno? i think a lot about his background in godza studios and how that bounces off not just the mankai crew but also the world of veludo way itself and heās so talented, and he does so much to do what he can, and i love him, i truly do, i think heās such an underestimated character in not just canon but also canon narrative and i could just go on about his relationship with taichi, and his relationship with tsumugi, and then his relationship to sakuya and sakyo and izumi, and azami and tenma, honestly, tassun is such a star and i could just go on about him i canāt wait until he gets his time to shine
homare: homare is such a character that requires actual thought to comprehend because thereās so much going on with him. i canāt think about him when iām sleepy because i know iāll forget something and fuck with his outline. anyways heās still a poet. cool! because heās a poet heās also adept at writing lyrics for the gang, and each member of the label ends up writing a song or two at some point, but they do basics and concept and stuff, homare is the guy they go to so it can get refined, because he actually makes his own music, he has a bandcamp, but it never really took off because heās such a kook and invented prog music, if you ever listened to the art of dying by gojira and counted the opening time signature and got 45/4 thatās because he did that, and then also heās a guitarist, heās the guitarist for these freezing lakes, heās their lead, but then again you remember theyāre kind of this very orchestral but folky band, and a lot of their songs use way more instruments than there are people, and thatās because homARE IS ALL OF THEM, HEāS ALL OF THEM AT ONCE, HE PLAYED PRETTY MUCH EVERY INSTRUMENT OUTSIDE OF THEIR MAIN LINEUP, HE KNOWS HOW TO PLAY THE FLUTE, HE KNOWS HOW TO PLAY THE HARMONICA, HE KNOWS HOW TO PLAY THE CELLO THE TROMBONE THE SAXOPHONE PIANO MARIMBA WHAT DOES HE NOTĀ KNOW HOW TO PLAY I HATE THINKING ABOUT HIM. azuma: bassist! he picked up bass in high school but he also has a background in piano, so he occasionally swaps between the two during live gigs. heās actually more experienced on piano than homare, too, so for studio recordings he also records piano tracks. i like azuma here because heās such a common glue for everyone, you know? i keep looking at my notes and thereās always something that mentions his dynamic with x, especially for winter. itās funny, too, because heās such a not-loud character and yet heās always so present
guy: okay so i said tasuku was my favorite right. i meant that. i mean it. but thatās referring to year 1. and you do not understand how much it pains meĀ that i have to wait until the very very end of year 2 to even look at guy because this guy, THIS GUY is my favoritest ever in the au and i have so many thoughts about him on the daily and i!!!! gotta write!!!!!! so i can talk about guy!!!!!!!!!!!!! last week i literally snapped awake sometime past 3 am because i had a Guy Thought. guy is fucking crazy. heās so rad. i love guy. band au!guy is quite literally what keeps me going.

this is my first year ever participating in nanowrimo! when i first started @citowonā it was the first time in years that iāve been able to get over my writerās block, and iām happy to say itās completely gone. iāve always wanted to participate in nanowrimo, and it feels absolutely amazing to finally grasp that dream. i donāt want to be too corny, but i truly donāt think i wouldāve been able to take this goal on without a3, and without my readers. thank you dearly for reading my work. it really is what keeps me going! please bear with me as i continue to write.

this is delphia!
her older sister moved from america to japan to compose for the original mankai company. growing up delphia was a talented singer, actor and dancer, but never got casted for productions- there was always just someone better suited to it despite her efforts. so once she heard of mankai company reopening, she dropped by on a nostalgia trip, and reunited with one of her not-quite-close friends, izumi! after seeing the sorry (but promising!) state of the theater delphia offered to act as an assistant director to fine-tune the actorsā skills and... well, izumiās made worse managing decisions.
to be fair, delphia does hold the actors and their development close to her heart, but sheās a bit of a bastard. sheās a hell of an enabler for a lot of chaos just because it seems fun, and it stems from a belief that youāre never too old to have fun, which is also why she dresses so boldly (yes, these are her casual clothes!). of course, sheāll relinquish her authority to izumi once things get too out-of-hand, but she brings a lot of heart and fun into their little family, and delphia tries to give off an approachable vibe to the other actors as both a role model/authority figure and as a friend.
sheās still a bastard though. she can come across as immature in the same way that itaru does, and sheās versatile and knowledgeable enough about different hobbies to get along with the actors, but itās hard for her to really feel a deep connection with anyone in mankai- after all, she didnāt get to visit the original company often as an american, and never got the same childhood friendship bond that izumi and sakyo share.
regardless, at her core delphia just wants to see everyone smile as they bloom! thatās really all she wants. everything she does is so the people she loves can see entertainment and fun in every little thing. be unique and unapologetic, and look forward to every day. is that too deep? it might be. sheās a character that still tries to do the trick where your profile picture is the default but with a spider edited onto it to scare people
