Of course I was going to like the snarky dude who leans weirdly against walls and furniture
Imagine Person A trapped in a time loop, forced to relive days over and over every time Person B dies. And B dies a lot. A has to keep saving them and at first tries to explain the loops to B, but after each rehearsed explanation, each drawn out conversation is erased by Bās many deaths, A eventually gives up and just works endlessly to continue each day a little longer until it might eventually stop.
Now imagine this from Bās perspective. B doesnāt know anything about the loops, doesnāt remember any of their deaths, only knows that A has become strangely overprotective latelyāand that A looks so terribly weary.

If you told a woman her sex had a shared, long-lived history with weasels, she might deck you. But those familiar with mythology know better

Starting to think a cooler headcanon for Clarkās upbringing might just be that the entire town of Smallville collectively decided to just go with it and accept that Martha and John's kid has superpowers, but we don't talk about it.
Someone's tractor gets stuck and nothing can get it out? "Be a dear and run down to the Kents, would you? Ask for Clark?"
"Why Clark, we need a machine--"
"Run along now."
Or if he kicks too hard and the football vanishes into the upper stratosphere, no it didn't, we all collectively saw it land over there *vague hand movements*
Clark: *does anything beyond human limits*
Smallville citizen:
The Kent's found an abandoned baby in a cornfield? Well good for them they've been longing for a child for years
I swear that Kent boy was running faster than that train...welp none of my business
Jonathan! Your witch child busted my tractor!
these are small town Midwest farmers they ain't saying shit to FEDS
I was gonna say, Midwestern rules says as long as that boy is polite and respectful (of course he is), there's no reason to ask any questions.
Imagine the nosy bitch (there's always a nosy bitch) going, "Oh, he's their ADOPTED son" and the OUTRAGE. "Oh, is your daddy your step-daddy, Lauren?"
"How could you say that???"
"Because everyone knows you don't look a thing like your daddy, but you sure look like his cousin."
I also like how this can mirror Bruce; Batman only lets a small handful of people in on his hero identity, but most of Gotham has no idea who he is... meanwhile, more than half of Smallville knows about the Kent boy, and they just keep quiet around a few folks they don't trust
When Superman starts showing up on the news all of smallville collectively smile and go and congratulate the Kentās āyou know Martha I just knew that boy of yourās would grow ta some good,ā they have a potluck whenever he wins some big fight and are all holding their breath when he get hurt, also every single person in smallville will curse out Lex Luther on a whim,
Look, despite what some people might think, country folk aint stupid. Simple sometimes, sure, but not stupid. So when three events happened in quick succession, it wasn't hard to connect the dots.
First, there was the shooting star. Meteor. Meteorite. "That green blaze of light that went cross the sky screaming like a banshee's flute". Whatever you're going to call it. Anyone who was up at the time saw it. But nobody heard any sound of it hitting ground. And with all the fuss it was making, you'd figured you would. Everyone would've just figured it burnt itself up while stretching through the sky. Except.

honestly fandom has ruined me because now any time i'm in the desert and i see two vast and trunkless legs of stone or a half-sunk shattered visage i'm like "omg just like in Ozymandias" and its like come on girl not every half-sunk shattered visage is Ozymandias
Grand Theft Hamlet is a great movie, by the way, or at least it filled a need I didn't know existed. It's a documentary where a lot of actors in lockdown try to stage Hamlet in Grand Theft Auto Online, getting other people to read various parts, picking places to perform, scheduling rehearsals, picking up some regular people who watch them rehearse, and all the while dodging every other player in the game shooting at them with rockets. It's great.
One thing that especially worked for me, though, was the ghost. This is the first time I really felt it when Horatio begs Hamlet not to follow the ghost. Inside GTA Online, the ghost is in all black except for a ski mask with LED lights in a smiley face, standing on a blimp that Hamlet has to jump down onto from a balcony. Don't follow him, Hamlet!
Anyway, go watch this.
So I did not expect this to be so spectacular, and more fool me. The concept is fascinating, and what you get more than the play is a group of people trying to navigate an adriftness through the timelessness of Shakespeare, where modern conditions and humble truths of human nature clash a magnificent, jarring environment that seems perfectly suited to such a venture.

Iāve been trying to put my finger on why Hades being depicted as a villain is so annoying in other media but works so well in Hadestown, and I think Iāve figured out why: Hadestown Hades isnāt the bad guy because heās the god of the DEAD; instead, heās the bad guy because heās the god of WEALTH. Usually, whenever Hades appears in a movie or video game, he has some stupid motivation likeĀ āughh Iām tired of being lord of the underworld I wanna be lord of everythingā orĀ āIām the Greek mythology version of the western concept of Satan, fear me!!ā but Hadestown really said screw that and made his motivationĀ āI love my wife so much but we have a shitty marriage arrangement and her long absence combined with my severe self-doubt has lead me down the hellish road to corruption by all the riches under the ground.ā
#okay but you could argue! that in hadestown specifically#hades being the god of wealth and the god of death are both part of him being a capitalist#unsafe practices and hazardous materials kill or disable a LOT of construction workers#labour laws are written in blood#and itās impossible to get filthy rich like that without exploiting other human beings
Sorry @exeiguess but your tags passed peer review. This is it exactly. The two are intertwined especially when it comes to discussions of labor and workerās rights and exploitation, and THATāS part of what makes him work so perfectly as the antagonist in Hadestown.
