Thoughts on a headcanon of mine about Wind and Wild (Walkie Talkie duo!)
So, we know that in BOTW, it is basically confirmed that Link (or Wild) doesn't speak because he feels a big pressure in being the perfect Hero and knight. So much so that he is silent like all the time.
At least, that is the case before he dies in the calamity. After that, we aren't really sure if he changes a lot. But, I like to think he did, and a lot.
Wild did not have the pressure or the memory of it, so he had no reason to conceal his true self. He became more outgoing and expressive as the time passed and he experienced a new life. He probably felt terrible when he recovered the memories, but it was like he was a new person and not the same knight he was before, although that is still somewhere in his subcouncious.
So, when Wild gets triggered or recalls something traumatic he almost immediately goes non-verbal and his expressions also clam up. It's a terrifying sight to most of the Chain (except Twilight who, unfortunately, was used to it and is able to help from his previous time with him as Wolfie).
And who has a very similar issue? You guessed, our very own sailor, Wind.
Now, for Wind, obviously we don't really have any explanation as to why he doesn't speak in the games he's in like Wild does (even though Wind is basically the only Link that actually said a sentence in-game). So from now on, this is mostly headcanon stuff.
So, Wind (at least my Wind) has a speech disorder since he was a little child. He took way longer to actually form phrases and words than Aryll for an example. And Grandma always thought it was odd, because he could read and write just fine. But when he tried to speak, his voice would break a lot, his pronunciation was hard to understand and he would stutter way too much.
Of course, she tried her best and was really patient with him. She even got a hold of some Hylian Sign Language to teach him, which was really helpful when he just couldn't utter anything comprehensible or it was something too specific to be conveyed with only expressions or pointing.
But, the other Outsetians (and also a few visitors of the island) were a bit more judgemental, even if they tried to hide it, Wind noticed it. He got very self-councious and decided to not try to speak again after a certain occasion. Wind went completely silent, relying on his expressions and Sign Language.
Wind remained like that all the way to PH, where Linebeck, after some time, encouraged him to try speaking again. And then after that, he spoke sometimes, though he was still really quiet (as in speaking).
War of Ages came and he found even more people that were patient enough (and others that were not) to let him try to communicate with his voice instead of sign. Wind (or Tune at this time) was very much more comfortable with speaking and how his voice sounded.
In the events of Linked Universe, he was like a completely different person (much like Wild after the calamity), he spoke loudly, always said his opinion and would just talk a lot in general.
However, when pressured or recalling bad memories, he starts stuttering. And if it's really bad, you literally can't understand him anymore or his voice would just not come out, no matter how hard he tried.
I think one of the things that would bring them to be much closer is exactly these kinds of moments. They understand each other. Painfully well.
They would just sit beside each other in comforting silence, knowing that the other won't expect either to speak or even make a sound. They would be fine as long as they had each other and their brothers.
No need to fit in or be 'normal'
