World Camel Day is celebrated annually on June 22 to honor the incredible "Ship of the Desert". The observance highlights their vital role in climate adaptation, food security, and historical heritage.

Most of the species in this family exist today only in domestication, but there are still some wild counterparts. Camelids were domesticated 5,000 years ago to serve as pack animals and to provide milk, meat and a source for fleece. They can be found in Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and the Australian Outback (Dromedary Camel), Asia (Bactrian Camel) and South America (all the rest).

Why Camels Matter:

•Masters of Survival: Camels can travel weeks without water. When they rehydrate, they can drink over 100 liters in just a few minutes.

•Nature's Energy Reserves: A camel's hump stores fat rather than water, which acts as an essential energy reserve during times of scarce food.

•Extreme Adaptations: Features like wide, padded feet and double rows of long eyelashes allow them to traverse soft sand and survive harsh desert sandstorms.

•Educational Resources: Learn about critically endangered wild camel populations (like the Bactrian) and the conservation efforts by the Wild Camel Protection Foundation.

•Farm Visits: In camel-centric hubs, locations like the Camelicious Farm open their doors to celebrate the animal with farm tours, camel milk ice cream, and educational sessions.
