How lovely the little bits and pieces. The fingernails, the teeth. Even the bombed cathedrals being built inside me. How sweet the eye socket. The spine. The curious, distant possibility that God had given courage to human beings that we might suffer a little longer.

Mindfulness helps us get better at seeing the difference between what’s happening and the stories we tell ourselves about what’s happening, stories that get in the way of direct experience. Often such stories treat a fleeting state of mind as if it were our entire and permanent self.

To me, a man is someone who is brave enough to love, and let himself be loved.

You have never loved me. You have only thought it pleasant to be in love with me.
