Saint Alice of Schaerbeek

Patronage: the blind and the paralyzed

Saint Alice of Schaerbeek (also known as Adelaide or Aleydis) was entrusted to the care of the Cistercian nuns of La Cambre Abbey when she was seven years old and remained there for the rest of her life, eventually becoming a Cistercian laysister. At 20 she contracted leprosy and was isolated from the community. A year later she was stricken blind and later became completely paralyzed. Alice's greatest consolation came from reception of the Holy Eucharist, although she was not allowed to drink from the cup because of the danger of contagion. However, the Lord appeared to her with an assurance that to receive under one species, was sufficient. Known for her visions and ecstasies, she died in 1250.

Santa Alice de Schaerbeek (também conhecida como Adelaide ou Aleydis) foi confiada aos cuidados das freiras cistercienses da Abadia de La Cambre aos sete anos de idade e lá permaneceu pelo resto da vida, tornando-se eventualmente uma leiga cisterciense. Aos 20 anos, contraiu lepra e foi isolada da comunidade. Um ano depois, ficou cega e, posteriormente, completamente paralítica. O maior consolo de Alice vinha da recepção da Sagrada Eucaristia, embora não lhe fosse permitido beber do cálice devido ao perigo de contágio. No entanto, o Senhor apareceu-lhe com a certeza de que receber a Eucaristia sob uma das espécies era suficiente. Conhecida por suas visões e êxtases, ela faleceu em 1250.
