It's a sad fact that every long running universe based upon themes and tones of isolation, limiality, and cosmic horror gets worn down by overexplanation, overpopulation of the universe with entities, overuse, and eventually irony and financial exploitation. Derlething happened to Lovecraft, it happened to SCPs, it happened in record times to the backrooms.
If you try to build a collective work with vibe of subtle unease and liminality, someone will invariably introduce a guy that looks like this:

You can lie when you name things
Really cool thing I just learned about: ok so I've been using ellipsus as my writing app of choice for a while, and it's a great alternative if you want something like google docs but want to step away from google stuff. But I just learned about their plus version. Now- I am not going to use their plus version. I'm not a huge writer and the stuff they have isn't stuff I myself am interested in, but for someone who uses it a lot and wants to support it I'm sure it may be useful. But the reason I come to you is because of the monetization method. It is the first software like this is a WHILE that I've seen just have a "buy it forever" option.
Now that's nice but what about the people who can't pay a hundred buck lump sum? Is their business practice just to wring the monthly subscribers dry forever? NO! Because this is the cool part:
No matter how you pay you will end up fully owning the product after at max 2 years. I'm so tired of how consumer hostile subscriptions have been that seeing something like this where a subscription is being used to give the buyer more options in a way that's friendly to them is just flooring.
So yeah go use ellipsus. Imo the only downside is it doesn't have an app and is all in browser, but I just use the Firefox option of "add this site to homescreen" and it's mostly the same.
I used to watch stories where there's a whole thing where a character is in a fabricated reality designed to make them happy and they almost all have another character go "yeah this place is perfect and wonderful in every way and living here will make you happy forever- but it isn't real!" and growing I would scoff and go "who cares if it isn't real? the end result is still the same regardless of if the reality is fake or not"
but now I live in a world where cute animal videos and funny news headlines could be AI. And I get it now.

getting scambot messages from random accounts that clearly used to be normal active blogs is sad enough. you know that there used to be a real person on that blog until they were tricked into handing their password to the digital fae.
but it's an entirely new level of tragic when somebody you've actually spoken to gets turned into a bot account. it's like peeking at a zombie apocalypse through the window and realizing one of the shambling corpses was your friend.
and then the zombie catches sight of you, lurches up to your window, and shouts through the glass that they accidentally reported your account to tumblr and you'll be deactivated unless you click this link.
RIP to the blog that used to DM me to tell me they liked my new chapters. Their last known words spoken before being turned, 17 hours ago: "Ggs!" They were praising someone's deadlift.
the message they tried to get me with is probably the same message that got them, so for anybody who hasn't already been warned about the signs of a zombie account:
if you get something like this ↑ they're gonna follow up by instructing you to contact tumblr support on discord and give you contact info; or they're gonna link a website that looks sort of like tumblr support and say you have to email them; or any variety of "you must now contact tumblr, here is how you contact tumblr."
whatever they send you, it Does Not lead to tumblr. it leads to the master zombie that bit them and inducted them into the ranks of the undead, and will bite you the second they have your email and password. i might be confusing zombies and vampires. anyway,
it's easier to fall for these messages because the blog doesn't LOOK like a bot blog, because it ISN'T a bot blog. it's a normal person's blog that got accessed by a bot, meaning the blog's content CLEARLY looks like a real active user when you click on it. and yes—it might even be a blog you already know. sometimes bots like this go down a blog's DMs or reblogs and message people they've previously interacted with.
they got one of my treasured followers, and they can get you too. don't fall for their tricks. know the signs.
