Madoka Magica is very obviously a commentary on child exploitation, specifically the exploitation of adolescent girls under the patriarchy. Magical girlhood in pmmm is an allegory for female reproductive labor, giving up personal comfort, emotional + physical energy, and all personal desires and ambitions in the face of fulfilling a role to further the survival of the human race(and in pmmm’s case, the universe’s existence). Even Kyubey’s beliefs and manipulation mirrors how the patriarchy and people who preach it groom young girls into the system, obscuring the truth about what it takes to fulfill the roles they’re coercing young girls into, not to mention how similar both Kyubey and the patriarchy’s attitude is towards the girls and women who don’t feel fulfilled under the system they were manipulated into, apathy, victim blaming, and dodging accountability. It’s what makes Madoka’s wish so powerful, the wish she makes in the end is one made with agency and autonomy, Madoka knew the truth of magical girls, the suffering they go through, and how their wishes harm them, and yet makes a wish anyway, not out of coercion, or manipulation, she made an informed decision to make a wish and save magical girls from the fate of witching out. Of course pmmm is far from perfect, there are some writing decisions that are icky, such as making the incubators incapable of human emotions and empathy, especially because he represents predatory men and the patriarchy, it feels like when people chalk up the male gender to be inherently bad or incapable of empathy or compassion, it takes away agency and accountability, or the fact that you have to question the writing when considering how one of the writers compared the magical girls to fucking Al-Qaeda, but despite the flaws, it shouldn’t discredit the writing that was done right.

Aside from the story’s theming, there’s also the fact that pmmm isnt even really a deconstruction of the magical girl genre?????? It has a different tone and definitely tackled the genre in a much more grim and dark manner, but the overall message aligns with traditional magical girls. The series ends off on a hopeful note, Homura resolving to keep fighting for the world Madoka loved and wanted to protect, the same world she gave up her life to save, hope and perseverance is what drives the story forward, it’s what makes Homura loop the same month for years to save madoka and what eventually leads to the destruction of all witches and a true afterlife for magical girls, and in terms of rebellion, it’s a literal cliffhanger, it’s not the end to the story and it’s clear that this franchise will not end with anything worse than bittersweet, even rebellions ending implies Homura’s world will not hold in the long term, and that order will be restored. Pmmm doesn’t go against the core beliefs and themes of the genre, rather it works with the genre and utilizes it to tell it’s own story, it’s definitely subversive but definitely not a deconstruction.
