So I found a squid hat at the dollar store and obviously since my horse is nicknamed Squid I had to buy it. Thankfully he thrives off of any sort of attention.

Researchers unearth remarkable horse 'shoes'
Alex Meyer continues to be in awe of the treasure trove that is Vindolanda.
For years, the former Roman auxiliary fort, located just south of Hadrian’s Wall in northern England, has yielded a number of finds unique to the site and to the former empire. To date, excavations have yielded well-preserved artefacts such as ink tablets, shoes, combs, swords and textiles.
Meyer, a Roman historian and Classical Studies professor at Western, was recently part of a team that unearthed four early Roman hipposandals – shoes worn by horses – at Vindolanda.
“The most interesting thing about this is we found all four of the hipposandals. It’s rare and remarkable to find one, but to find all four, deposited like this, is really cool. I’ve seen one other set of four in all my days,” Meyer said. Read more.
@madrivervalleyicelandics this seems up your alley!
I’ve seen this! Very cool. I’ve been trying to understand how they got them to stay on the hooves…
They would tie rope around it, as you can see here

"The story of a boy who became a man... By becoming a bear."
This movie is way too under appreciated in my opinion… The fandom is practically non-existent…
And I don’t understand why? The plot was fantastic.
All of the characters were lovable.
There was no one that you absolutely could not stand.
The “bad guy” was actually the main character, Kenai. Which was an interesting twist for Disney.
But by building a bond with this young cub (Koda), and seeing the world through the eyes of a bear, he realized that he (as a man) had been the monster… Not bears.
I mean, talk about character development…
Koda: Those monsters are really scary… Especially with their sticks.
And for me, this scene right here was one of my most emotional Disney moments. You can’t even here Kenai telling the actual story… But you can see their facial expressions and you can just feel it. You know exactly what he’s saying to Koda.
Kenai: Well, I have a story to tell you.
Koda: Really? What’s it about?
Kenai: Well, it’s kind of about a man… and kind of about a bear. But mostly, it’s about a monster.
… Koda… I did something very wrong.
Okay, but on a lighter note?
The animation was incredible.
Amazing.
It was a powerful movie about brotherly love, guidance, and responsibility, and it truly is one of my favorite Disney movies ever.
Not to mention the soundtrack is amazing. You can’t go wrong with Phil Collins.
The fandom will never be huge, but the movie definitely deserves more credit. If you haven’t watched it, I highly recommend it.
Brother Bear
I want to remind everyone that this movie is where the “quit telling everyone I’m dead” “Sometimes I can still hear his voice” joke came from.
This movie is pure art and also has one of the best memes
God I just get chills from seeing anything from this movie, so fucking amazing
first neckrope ride ever! So proud of my little red monster

I had an interesting afternoon today, visiting the stables I used to teach at here, now under new ownership, but with many of the same horses and people still there, and whilst the new owner was explaining the whole deal with Abba and thus my connection to the place to one of her clients, I learned what actually happened to the pony during her dark days.
That working hypothesis I have about her being used in bush racing?
Well, some days you may be intellectually satisfied that the hypothesis was correct, but heartbroken to learn the truth.
Abba was a bush racer. It is why her mane and tail were hacked so short - it was not mere malnutrition causing her mane to fall out, but standard practice to prevent opposing jockeys from grabbing the mane and tail to slow her or unseat her rider. It is also why she was locked away: she was presumably successful and valued by her owner, and he needed to keep her safe so nobody would steal her. So the trauma she experienced by living in a shed until it was time for her to run was a mark of his care for her, not neglect.
And as for the running, she was raced on every conceivable surface, from sand to dirt roads to tarmac. She apparently had an excellent start as well, and could hit full gallop within strides. It was trained into her by hitting her repeatedly behind the saddle.
And now I have more of the missing pieces I need to understand the tragedy that made her what she was. Now I know why she bolted every time a rider sat on her. Now I know why our first canters saw us achieve a flat-out gallop in three strides. Now I know why she freaks out in company, particularly if another horse comes up from behind. Now I know why she goes into a blind panic if you wave a whip off her at another horse.
Five years. Five years to undo the damage done in one.
No wonder she has been the most difficult horse I have worked with in all my years around horses. The treatment she experienced, the conditions in which she lived, the constant hunger and pain and fear, all of that was seared into her. What she went through kills other horses: it killed one Thoroughbred in the space of a weekend last year: but that little iron mare survived.
And yet - and yet - once I thought her old owner was cruel. But now I know that he cared for her, and even if he did not do right by her, he kept her safe, he kept her alive, he did not run her until her legs shattered or her heart gave out. And he was proud of her.
I am glad she is alive. I am glad that in five years she has not known a hard word or a blow. I am glad that she has a herd and good feed and so much space and freedom. She has come so far, physically and mentally, and while she may never come wholly right, she is a much happier horse. And that is what really matters, her happiness.
Oh my, poor girl... She looks like she is already 30 years old in the first picture :( How lucky she has been to end up with you, she looks so much better now!!

MIDDY IS DRIVING ME INSANE
now, a day after she got her last anti-inflammatory, her whole lower leg is swollen and hot and she’s not walking on it at all.
what the fuck do I think now??? abscess after all?????? she lets me move her whole leg around however I want to without signs of discomfort.
I put my foot down with her owner and called out a lameness specialist for tomorrow. I’m sick of his indifference and I wanna know what’s wrong. Even if all he does is tell us that her leg is fucked up beyond repair and puts her down - still better than not knowing and letting her go on like this.
fucking hell
That sucks that you still don’t know. I’m hoping it is an abcess and turns out well for her...
The first vets had it all wrong with Afra as well and said it was her knee and not an abcess. She had no swelling in her leg and no pulsing. I noticed it was slightly warmer low on her leg, but the vet said that wasn’t the case and it was warmer at her knee .-. I had to let them make an x-ray before another vet finally said it was an starting abcess. Hard to diagnose because it was so small but it made her refuse to put on weight on that leg and she was in a lot of discomfort and pain. I’m reaaaally hoping it turns out to be like that for Midnight as well...
