Emotionally unstable mother & emotionally absent father duo means you probably struggle with…
Feeling responsible for other people's emotions
Constantly seeking reassurance or fearing abandonment
Mistaking inconsistency for love
People pleasing to avoid conflict or rejection
Feeling like you have to earn love instead of simply receiving it
Hyper independence because relying on others never felt safe
Feeling guilty for having needs or setting boundaries
Overthinking texts, conversations, and other people's behavior
Believing your worth depends on what you achieve or how useful you are
Feeling uncomfortable when relationships are calm, healthy, and predictable
Choosing emotionally unavailable partners because they feel familiar
Struggling to trust people, even when they've given you no reason not to
Feeling like you're "too much" or "not enough" at the same time
Living in survival mode long after the danger has passed
-
The hardest part is that these don't feel like childhood wounds. They feel like your personality. But many of them are learned survival strategies & patterns your nervous system developed to help you adapt to an environment where love, attention, emotional safety were inconsistent
-
More variations:
Emotionally absent mother + emotionally immature father = Emotional loneliness, hyper independence, feeling unseen, difficulty expressing emotions, attracting emotionally unavailable partners
Emotionally absent mother + emotionally absent father = Emotional neglect, feeling invisible, numbness, difficulty connecting, believing your needs don't matter, self reliance to a fault
Emotionally unstable mother + emotionally immature father = Walking on eggshells, emotional confusion, guilt, parentification, poor boundaries, difficulty regulating emotions
Emotionally immature mother + emotionally immature father = Emotional invalidation, identity confusion, people pleasing, low self worth, difficulty handling conflict
Emotionally absent mother + emotionally unstable father = Fear of closeness, chronic anxiety, hypervigilance, emotional insecurity, expecting chaos in relationships
Emotionally immature mother + emotionally absent father = Approval seeking, emotional suppression, fear of vulnerability, low self worth, difficulty trusting others
Emotionally immature mother + emotionally unstable father = Caretaking, perfectionism, feeling responsible for everyone, poor boundaries, attraction to emotionally chaotic relationships
Emotionally stable mother + emotionally absent father = Seeking external validation, fear of rejection, difficulty trusting men, discomfort receiving healthy love
Emotionally absent mother + emotionally stable father = Difficulty receiving nurturing, emotional distance, fear of depending on others, longing for maternal connection
Emotionally stable mother + emotionally immature father = Conflict avoidance, confusion around emotional expression, seeking emotionally mature partners, difficulty understanding healthy masculinity
Emotionally immature mother + emotionally stable father = Guilt for having needs, people pleasing, difficulty receiving care, challenges trusting female relationships
story of my life, i guess

Our environment can override our natural instincts. You can naturally think, feel, or behave in ways that are healthy for you, but if the people around you don’t understand those behaviors, they’ll often label them as wrong. Over time you begin questioning your own instincts and replacing them with beliefs that help you fit in instead of helping you thrive
Examples:
A naturally curious child asks lots of questions. Adults call them “difficult,” so they learn to stay quiet
Someone enjoys spending time alone to recharge. Their friends call them antisocial, so they start forcing themselves to socialize even when they’re exhausted
A person has strong boundaries and says “no” when something doesn’t feel right. They’re labeled selfish, so they begin putting everyone else first
A child naturally expresses emotions. They’re told they’re “too sensitive,” so they learn to hide how they feel
Someone is excited about learning, reading, and growing. They’re teased for “thinking they’re better than everyone else,” so they stop sharing their interests
A child naturally trusts their gut when someone feels unsafe. Adults tell them, “Be nice,” so they learn to ignore their intuition
Someone prefers peace over drama. They’re called boring, so they start tolerating chaos just to feel accepted
A person is naturally ambitious and dreams big. Their environment says they’re unrealistic or arrogant, so they begin playing small
A child is naturally creative and imaginative. They’re constantly told to “be realistic,” and eventually stop creating
Someone naturally forgives but also walks away when they’re repeatedly hurt. Others call them cold or unforgiving, so they stay in unhealthy relationships longer than they should
The challenge isn’t always that your instincts are wrong. Sometimes they were simply interpreted through the lens of people who couldn’t recognize or value them. As we grow up, part of healing is learning to separate what is truly you from what your environment taught you to believe about yourself
they are sitting and pondering
slow mornings, minimized schedules, dancing in the kitchen, a cozy home, surrounded by nature and the ones i love.
