"Well, it certainly wasn't me," Jai says with a frown. He had saw the notice this morning, had passed it on his way to work. He circled around again to see if it was real and not just something from his maladaptive daydreaming. "It seems we have an awful gossiper in our midst. I don't know any intergalactic conspiracy theorists... do you?"
"Unfortunately, I doubt the conspiracy theory is intergalactic, but rather some devilish knave planted firmly on this plane. We must hunt them down." The Jai-isms might stick out to some, but he was truly speaking Taeng's language. She rolled with the punches, too caught up in her own thoughts to pay Jai any mind. Those thoughts being, of course, giddiness that he had fallen cluelessly into her trap and excitement for the way the truth was sure to come out thanks to her reverse psychology.
" emery! what are you doing?! " the frustration leaks into her voice despite cordelia's best intentions. they had only hired emery a short while ago, with the promise of good work, and nothing had worked out so far. knots that were tied fell apart, fish weren't cut propely, the bait was never stored right... or now, like before, were on the floor.
"It was an accident, i swear!" Emery immediately jumps to defend herself because she knows Cordelia will surely be furious with her for spilling the bait...again. "It's just so cramped in here, I'm still getting used to it is all." Never mind the fact that she'd worked at the bait shop for weeks or months; time felt weird in the valley. "I just need to find the scoop. Do you see it around here? I know I just had it..." she rambled on.
"Dramatic much?" Seline says, rolling her eyes. "And I — I wasn't going through your stuff," Seline stutters, embarrassed, though she very well was going through Maude's stuff. Why shouldn't she? They were basically duplicates of each other, in dna, where it truly mattered. Seline was allowed to look through Maude's things... It was how she made sure the other wasn't planning some coup d'état.
"I came in to find my..." Seline pauses for a second far too long. "Raincoat. It was raining. I just happened upon the letter. Hardly my fault, you had it just sitting there." Yoba, why did she always over explain when she was nervous?
"Why would your raincoat be in my room?" Maude didn't buy Seline's bullshit excuse because she'd heard a lifetime of excuses from her twin and knew all too well when to spot a fake one. Or she thought she did anyway; whether or not Seline was actually snooping remained unknown, but it didn't matter to Maude. Her own version of reality was enough to make her blow up. "You are such a liar, Seline, you were snooping on purpose! What are you, 12 years old? You have no right to be going through my stuff like that."
" we need to make sure the club is packed tonight, emery. this can't be a failure! " marcel whined, and loudly, as if most of the things he had done in his life hadn't been failures. but that was of no importance: he and emery were going to be successful. " we need to go to zuzu city. and hand our flyers. even if everyone in the valley showed up here, it would be a disaster. there'd be no one new to meet! " and no one new to scam...
"It's not going to be a failure!" Emery chirped, ever the fount of toxic positivity. She listened intently to Marcel's instructions as if he were a drill sergeant, and even nodded like his cadet. "We have to go to the city! Should we go now? We can't miss the bus!" She started to hurry around, trying to remember where they'd left the flyers...

@lcvergrl // Mad Maude was on her usual huff and puff tour de Stardew, and her scowl only deepened when she saw she was about to cross paths with Jai. She was still upset with him for his snide remarks about the general store. She hoped she could slip by him with incident, but of course their umbrellas collided, and the jostle forced Maude to drop her library book in the mud. "Can you watch where you're going?" she barked over the rolling thunder as she dove to save the book.
@ohvalleys // "Nooooooooo!" Emery panicked shrilly knocked over a tub of bait. No matter how many times she did it (the bait shop's corners were very tight), she would never get used to the way the worms looked wriggling on the floor. She choked back a gag and quickly looked away to find the scoop to get them back in the tub...but where did she leave it?
@ohvalleys ( from here ) // "Cordelia, just stop it, if you're going to keep bringing that up, then I don't know what to tell you anymore. That was when we were kids, and it's not the same thing," Maude felt herself growing frustrated again. She laid it out as simply as she could, one last time before she ran out of patience. "You know, I don't even care that you danced with someone else? I care that you didn't tell me, and I care that you won't even say sorry." Even though Maude hadn't exactly apologized for her wrongs yet either...
"Excuse me?" Taeng urgently called over the first passerby in the Town Square. She had to shout to be heard over the pouring rain. Emotion knit her brows together as Taeng tapped on the glass and pointed out her own note about Conrad, Jai and herself from the bulletin board and held it out to her neighbor. "Do you know who posted this?"
Beads of green rain landed on her forehead and Whitney tried to dab them away with her handkerchief as discreetly as possible. It wasn't the most comfortable place to be, sweltering under the late summer humidity and drowning in this mysterious green rain to pass out free ponchos and umbrellas, but she was so focused on her work that she hardly noticed her discomfort. As part of her master plan to dominate the Joja ladder, etc., she hoped the protective Joja swag would only heighten the goodwill Joja gained after the mine incident.

Watching Conrad play pack mule was kind of entertaining, actually. It wasn't really his element, so Maude couldn't help but smirk a bit when he heaved and hoed. "You okay, Conrad?" she feigned a bit of concern. He was fine.
" doing fantastic, maude! thank you! " he chirps, oblivious to the fact that his former student is clearly making fun of him. with another heave, the umbrella is brought open to cover them both, and conrad takes a moment to catch a labored breath before sitting. " hopefully..... the shade will.... help. "
END.
"Maybe the governor gets heartburn," Maude huffed, annoyed that Seline was still in her room. Normally a speech like that might send Seline stomping from her room, or maybe just out with a roll of her eyes. Before she could try her hand at twin extermination again, though, Seline posed her suspiciously cautious question. Unlike her sister, Maude looked directly at Seline, her eyes carefully narrow. "What do you mean?" She feared the worst, that Seline somehow knew about her university rejection, but surely she couldn't. How could she? "Are you talking about Cordelia? We're still fighting."
"Oh, you know," Seline says, catching Maude's eyes for only a second before going back to avoiding them. "You know," she repeats, still lost for words. Furrowing her brows, she settles on Maude, determined. "You do really need to sort that out, it's getting annoying."
Then, deciding perhaps that wasn't the best thing to say, Seline cringes. She wasn't sure how to approach the topic she came in her to approach. She wasn't even sure she wanted to, really, already prepared for Maude's wrath and probably a two to three week period of awkward silence between them.
"It's just I found this letter," she says casually, trying to make it sound lighter than it is. "Something about a school... that's not here..."
"As far as I'm concerned, we are not friends anymore," Maude lied for effect, mostly for the sake of getting Seline off her back. Why did she care so much about her and Cordelia anyway? Once Seline revealed the real reason she was in her room, though, it all clicked into place. She just wanted to snoop and meddle. "How do you know about that? Why were you in my room? Why were you going through my stuff?" Maude demanded, each additional question like the hiss of a snake rearing its head and preparing to bite. They were only the beginning.
marcel had to look smart, and fast. when he hears mauve, or whatever her name is, grumble about lack of a clue, he disappears — or tries to disappear, at least — behind a particularly large rock and pulls a piece of scrap paper out of his jacket pocket. " oh look! i've found a clue! " he exclaims. " and you can't look at it, it's addressed to me. but i would love to be your clue-hunting partner. " four eyes were certainly better than two.
Maude's only solace in all of the games was that she'd ended up alone, her parents wandering off somewhere, Seline elsewhere...and well, those were the only people she really talked to right now. Before she could really wallow in her patheticness now that she'd found some privacy, though, someone had to interrupt her. "Oh great," she grumbled, loud enough for Marcel to hear. "Please, please, tell me the clue Marcel. I want to win so badly." Her voice and expression were as flat as her arms over her chest.
danica grimaced as she narrowly dodged a particularly muddy area of the floor that they were on. "absolutely not," she responded, her face seemingly in a permanent sourpuss expression. "why on earth would anybody willingly be in these mines? it's disgusting."
Emery's eyes went wide at Danica's obvious distaste, but her 100-watt smile didn't falter. It was kind of a talent, to be honest. "I guess you're right, yeah, it's kind of...muddy." She sidestepped the same patch as Danica, the heel of her boot splashing just a tad. "But I guess for the treasures. I think on this floor, we're supposed to look for a topaz."
( madison pettis, 25, cis woman, she/her ) ☼ i know it’s a small town, but i run into WHITNEY BAPTISTE every time i go to THE LIBRARY. it’s like they practically live there and not PELICAN TOWN for THREE MONTHS. it must be because they’re DETERMINED and SHARP. come to think of it, that’s probably why they’re a JOJA MART DISTRICT MANAGER IN TRAINING too. but i did hear they want to CLIMB THE JOJA LADDER AND BECOME CEO, and sometimes they like to RUN. rumor has it they also like RUBY but dislike SPRING ONION. what do you think? + meagan, 28, she/her, est

@lcvergrl || "I've spent quite a bit of time down here, you know. So if we see any monsters, I've got your back," Taeng embellished. She hadn't returned to the mines after a rather treacherous trip with Seline, and it was because she really didn't care for the monsters. But after hearing this hunt was a town-wide affair, and those in power had taken extra precautions to make the mines safer, she simply couldn't wait on the sidelines. She needed to be in on the action!
@chardonnavs || There was no denying the giddiness when Emery saw she'd been paired with Danica. While they'd gotten off on the wrong foot, their connection felt stronger lately, and Emery was eager to spend more time with her. "So have you spent a lot of time in the mines before?" she made conversation as they hunted for the clue on the first floor.
