Alistairâs mouth tipped downward slightly as he watched his friend and saw howâŠtroubled he seemed. Christopher Braxton was many things, but he wasnât often flustered. He was an anchor more often than not, and it worried Alistair to see that Christopher wasnât at his best tonight. Looking down at Christopherâs sword, he shrugged after a moment.
âThat is true - and definitely a concern,â he mused. âYouâre right, yet sometimes the best we can do for the people is to take care of ourselves as well,â Alistair said carefully. He wasnât particularly sociable or empathetic, but Christopher was different than other people, and he didnât want to come off as bossy or unfeeling to his friend, so he tried to very deliberately choose his words and hope for the best.
âI have beenâŠwell,â Alistair said, though the lack of conviction behind his words immediately was apparent. âOr perhaps to borrow from you, âwell enough.â It has been indeed far too long, although I have noting of particular import. If Iâm not resting, Iâm at the Barn or on patrol. Though I finally did manage to pass off a few festival duties of mine to one of the junior rangers as allowing him more responsibility, although I confess it was not an entirely selfless move on my part.â
The meaning of Alistairâs words did not bypass Christopherâs understanding. His friend was concerned, as any good friend would be, but the ranger found he wasnât wanting for concern right now. What he wanted was a distraction, something to keep his disquiet mind from its turbulent thoughts. So he remained silent on the topic of himself. The longer he could keep the topic of discussion from himself, the better.
It was much easier to focus upon Alistair and his idle chatter. A curious eyebrow was raised in the manâs direction. It wasnât like Alistair to slough work onto other people, if thatâs what one would call it. Curiosity was already tickling at the back of Christopherâs mind as questions came to rest upon his tongue.
âWell then, what is it that has become so worthy of Alistair Henryâs attention?â He offered a playful smirk in his friendâs direction, though it lacked the warmth it usually held. âA new beau, perhaps?â
